Royals lose pitchers Cole Ragans and Seth Lugo to the 15-day injured list
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Royals All-Star pitchers Cole Ragans and Seth Lugo were placed on the 15-day injured list on Saturday.
Left-hander Ragans was moved to the list with a left groin strain and right-hander Lugo with a third finger sprain.
Lefties Noah Cameron and Evan Sisk were recalled from Triple-A Omaha in corresponding moves.
Cameron is slated to start for the Royals against the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night. It would be the second start of his career.
Ragans exited in the sixth inning of a 10-3 loss to the Cardinals on Saturday night with groin tightness. He had given up four runs on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings before exiting the game.
'The groin feels fine today, not as stiff as when I came out of the game last night,' Ragans said. 'Just a couple of weeks of rest, continue throwing and get ready to go after the IL stint.'
The 2024 All-Star selection is 2-3 with a 4.53 ERA in nine starts this season. Ragans skipped a start on April 30 with a left groin strain.
'With Ragans, we didn't know it was going to happen,' Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. 'We were hoping that taking the one out of the rotation would help, but we are going to need to take a little more measures and have him out on the IL.'
Lugo, also a 2024 All-Star, has not pitched since May 11. He is 3-4 with a 3.02 ERA in nine starts this season.
'The finger feels better and has progressed pretty good so far,' Lugo said. 'At this point of the season, it is better to get healthy and be 100% out there than try to push through.'

Lugo and Ragans finished second and fourth, respectively, in the American League Cy Young ballot last season. Lugo won an AL Gold Glove.
'We were hopeful we could be able to avoid (the injured list) with Lugo, but with the inflammation still there and essentially a sprained middle finger,' Quatraro said. 'We just need to get him symptom-free before he can start throwing again.'
Ragans is the team leader in strikeouts and second in the American League with 72. Lugo is the team leader in innings pitched with 56.2 innings.

Brendan Donovan leaves Cardinals' loss early with toe discomfort
ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals utilityman Brendan Donovan left Tuesday night's game against the Toronto Blue Jays with left toe discomfort. Donovan, who has mainly played second base this season but was the leftfielder on Tuesday, left the game after striking out on a nine-pitch at-bat in the eighth inning in the Cardinals' 10-9 loss. 'It's kind of the joint in his big toe,' Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said. 'You can see that last at-bat, he couldn't even get off his backside there. It was hurting him pretty bad so we took him out.' Donovan received treatment but did not have an x-ray after the game. He is considered day to day. 'I was running around in the outfield, and it just started bugging me, and then it kind of just got progressively worse, and then it just got real grumpy at me,' Donovan said. Donovan said that there wasn't one moment that he hurt it, that it was more of a repetitive use injury. Shohei Ohtani moves closer to his Dodgers mound debut, throwing 3 simulated innings in San Diego
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Shohei Ohtani is moving ever closer to his first pitching appearance for the Los Angeles Dodgers. In fact, there's now a chance his fans might not even have to wait until the All-Star break. Ohtani looked sharp while throwing three simulated innings on Tuesday at Petco Park before the Dodgers faced the San Diego Padres, manager Dave Roberts said. The outing was another significant step in Ohtani's recovery from the elbow surgery that has prevented the two-way superstar from pitching since he signed with the Dodgers before last season. Ohtani threw just under 50 pitches to two minor league hitters during the third simulated game in his gradual comeback to the mound. The three-time MVP used his fastball and sweeper impressively, according to Roberts and Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior. 'I thought he was really good,' Roberts said. 'I thought the fastball had life. I thought the sweeper was really good. … (The hitters) said the stuff was coming out really well. It was about 44 pitches or something like that, so it was really good.' The Dodgers have been cagey about the timeline for Ohtani's return to the mound, with Roberts suggesting in recent weeks that it might not happen until after the All-Star break. But after Ohtani's latest mound outing, Roberts now says the chance of Ohtani pitching in a game before the All-Star break begins July 14 is 'north of zero.' 'It doesn't have to be a full buildup, because anything that he can give us is certainly going to be additive,' Roberts added. 'But I still stand by him and Dr. (Neal) ElAttrache, the training staff. They're going to drive this. So I'm just anxious for the next one.' Ohtani hasn't pitched in a major league game since Aug. 23, 2023, when he abruptly left in the second inning of his final start for the Los Angeles Angels. He was eventually diagnosed with a torn elbow ligament that required surgery. Ohtani has demonstrated elite pitching ability when healthy: He went 38-19 with a 3.01 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP while starting 86 games over five seasons for the Angels. He didn't pitch at all in 2019 and made just two starts in 2020 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Ohtani has remained steadfastly committed to playing both ways despite his hitting prowess, and the Dodgers could really use him on the mound this season. Los Angeles has 14 pitchers on the injured list, including expected starters Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Roki Sasaki, Tony Gonsolin and Gavin Stone. Still, the Dodgers say they won't rush their cornerstone. 'It's tempting,' Roberts said with a smile. 'I'm sure Shohei is tempted to just rip the Band-Aid off and get into a big-league game, but I think we're doing a good job of trying to take care of him. And truth be told, I don't know if anyone knows the right time to get him into a big-league game, but we're still being very careful.' Ohtani has been only a designated hitter since he agreed to a 10-year, $700 million free-agent deal with the Dodgers. He immediately won his third MVP award in 2024, batting .310 with 54 homers, 130 RBIs and 59 stolen bases for the eventual World Series champions. Tides record first NSL victory, beat visiting Rapid 2-1
HALIFAX – The Halifax Tides have finally hit the win column in the Northern Super League. A goal in the 75th minute by Gunnhildur Yrsa Jonsdottir snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted the Tides to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Ottawa Rapid on Tuesday at Wanderers Grounds. Olivia Scott gave the Rapid a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute, but Megumi Nakamura tied the match in the 58th minute. The Tides outshot the Rapid 19-8 — and 7-2 with on target shots — and improved to one win, five losses and one draw in seven NSL outings. The Rapid slipped to three wins, two losses and two draws in seven games. The Tides had 12 corners while the Rapid took five. The visitors controlled the possession percentage 55-45.
