‘Muktijoddha'-to-‘associate' shift upsets Bangla veterans

Kolkata: Bangladesh govt's ordinance, which has redefined the 'Freedom Fighter' status for those involved with the 1971 Liberation War, has sharp reactions from both sides of the border.
The National Freedom Fighters Council (Amendment) Ordinance-2025 on Tuesday amended the previous National Freedom Fighters Council Act-2022.
According to the ordinance, a 'Bir Muktijoddha' is defined as someone who, between March 26, 1971, and Dec 16, 1971, either prepared for war and received training at villages across Bangladesh, or crossed the border into India to enrol in various training camps with the aim of participating in the Liberation War.
The new categories are 'Muktijuddher Shohojogi' (Liberation War associate), 'Muktijoddha Poribar' (family of a freedom fighter) and 'Muktijuddher Shohojogi Poribar' (family of a Liberation War associate).
The initial confusion over Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's status as a Bir Muktijoddha was laid to rest with Faruk-e-Azam, advisor to the ministry of Liberation War affairs, saying Mujibur, along with the 400 leaders named in the news reports, were still recognised 'Muktijoddha'.

Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra artists and personnel, Bangladeshi journalists who worked in support of the war and Swadhin Bangla football team members will now be considered Liberation War associates.
A Bangladeshi national, who was commander of Dhaka north guerrilla unit and continues to be called a 'Bir Muktijoddha' as he was trained in India by the Indian Army and Bengal Regiment, opposed the move. "You can't push down artists and Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra personnel, who were the main inspiration to citizens and freedom fighters, as associates.
If Faruk-e-Azam's statement that the term 'associate' does not imply any reduction in respect, it must be notified in a gazette," he said.
Mujib's contributions to the Liberation War have become an important topic of discussion. Kolkata-based director Soumitra Dastidar, now in Dhaka, said he believed the Liberation War was not an outcome of Mujib's call. "There is historical evidence supporting it. I support the decision to drop Mujibur's name from the definition of the Liberation War..."
Dastidar said, pointing out he did not support renaming some as associates of the war.
"It was a people's war. The mother, who cooked for fighters, or the boy, who sneaked in information, should be considered muktijoddhas."
In the new ordinance, Mujib's reference as the 'Father of the Nation' has been dropped from the preamble of Bangladesh. In Kolkata, Abhijit Dasgupta, director of 'Invincible Bravura' on the formation of the first 'Nau Commando' in the 1971 war, opposed this step. "The new categories are adding to confusion. It should be categorically notified in a gazette to ensure that the contribution of all freedom fighters are acknowledged and honoured," Dasgupta said.

US Supreme Court allows DOGE access to Social Security data
The US Supreme Court on Friday allowed the Department of Government Efficiency, billionaire Elon Musk's former department, broad access to the Social Security Administration's data systems. This will allow the DOGE to access personal information of millions of Americans logged under the SSA, news agency Reuters reported. Justices put on hold the order of Maryland-based US District Judge Ellen Hollander, who had largely blocked DOGE's access to "personally identifiable information" in data such as medical and financial records while litigation proceeded in a lower court. This move came at the Justice Department's request. The court, which had a 6-3 conservative majority, did not provide a rationale for siding with the DOGE. Two labor unions and an advocacy group sued to stop DOGE from accessing sensitive data at the SSA. The plaintiffs of the lawsuit argued that SSA had been "ransacked" and that DOGE members had been installed at the agency without proper vetting or training and demanded access to some of its sensitive data systems. Earlier in February, DOGE's move to seek access to SSA data prompted the acting commissioner, Michelle King, to step down against the backdrop of the Musk-security system issues. King chose to resign after over 30 years of service as she refused to provide the requested information to the DOGE staffers at the SSA. A day later, the White House had said that the Trump administration put an "anti-fraud expert" temporarily in charge at the SSA. At the time, Trump also directed Musk and DOGE to identify fraud at the agency, with White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt saying that several dead people have been receiving fraudulent Social Security payments. "They haven't dug into the books yet, but they suspect that there are tens of millions of deceased people who are receiving fraudulent Social Security payments and so their goal in going into the Social Security Administration is to identify three things: Number one, to identify duplicate payments and to end them, Number two, to identify payments that are going to deceased people who are no longer living and should no longer be receiving that money and number three, to protect the integrity of the system for hardworking Americans who have been paying into it their entire lives,' Leavitt had told Fox News. Nancy Altman, president of the Social Security Works, an advocacy group for the preservation of Social Security benefits, said that there is no way to overstate "how serious a breach this (DOGE seeks SSA data) is". "And my understanding is that it has already occurred. The information collected and held securely by the Social Security Administration is highly sensitive," she had added. SSA has the data of everyone with a Social Security number, Medicare, and every low-income American who has applied for Social Security's means-tested companion program, Supplemental Security Income. In addition, Social Security payments account for around $1.5 trillion, or a fifth, of the annual federal spending in the US. An audit from last year, a NYT report cited. The agency is a major provider of government benefits, sending checks each month to more than 70 million recipients including retirees and disabled Americans.

UP CM adviser holds talks with Goswami community over Banke Bihari Corridor
Agra: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath's adviser Awanish Kumar Awasthi on Friday, chaired a meeting at the tourist facilitation centre in Vrindavan, to discuss issues related to the proposed Banke Bihari Corridor with members of the Goswami community involved in the management of the temple, local shopkeepers and residents. Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Awasthi said the proposed project aims to enhance facilities for pilgrims, and efficiently manage the increasing pilgrim footfall in the Mathura-Vrindavan area. "The number of pilgrims visiting the area is rising exponentially. Today's meeting focused on how to effectively cater to this surge while ensuring public confidence and participation in the planning process. This was the first round of discussions, and it was very productive," he said. On concerns raised by the Goswami community regarding the project, Awasthi said several suggestions had been put forth during the meeting. "The district magistrate and other officials will carefully evaluate these inputs. The state govt aims to proceed with the most inclusive and best possible option to take the project forward," Awasthi said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Established in 1862 in the heart of Vrindavan, the Shri Banke Bihari temple is administered by Shebaits — a hereditary priesthood responsible for daily rituals and temple management. It remains one of North India's most visited pilgrimage sites. The Supreme Court's May 15 verdict came amid ongoing protests by members of the Goswami community and local residents, who have opposed both the corridor project and the formation of Banke Bihari Temple Trust. The court's decision, delivered by a bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and SC Sharma, cleared the way for the govt to move ahead with its Rs 500 crore redevelopment plan, which includes acquiring nearly five acres of land near the shrine, using temple funds. Calls for redevelopment intensified after a stampede-like incident during Janmashtami celebrations in 2022, left two dead. In Sept 2023, the Allahabad high court directed the state govt to implement a corridor plan for improved crowd management and safety. While officials claim stakeholders were consulted, Shebaits and local residents have alleged they were excluded from the planning process.
