First five, hooker changes continue for Highlanders
Consistency and impact will be the watchwords for two of the Highlanders' positions of inconsistency on Friday night.
Hooker and first five are two of the pillars of a rugby spine but they have provided more questions than answers for the struggling Highlanders this season.
Soane Vikena (eight starts), Henry Bell (two) and Jack Taylor (one) have worn the No 2 jersey to varying degrees of effectiveness.
While transplanted Aucklander Vikena has nominally been the preferred starter, he has perhaps not quite found a consistent standard of performance, and his lineout throwing was particularly poor in the loss to Moana Pasifika before the Highlanders had the bye.
Taylor, a real prospect and lightning quick around the field but still a tender 21, has been given the start against the Hurricanes on Friday night as the Landers begin their run to the finish.
''It's just around, consistency, really,'' coach Jamie Joseph said today.
''Jack has always created some impact for us as a team. He's done that well. I remember the first game of the season, against the Blues . . . he creates some energy for the forward pack in big moments.
''When you have inconsistent performances, you're kind of looking for a solution.
''Soane has been good for us most of the time. Didn't execute at lineout time [against Moana Pasifika] so Jack gets a crack.''
First five is another area of scrutiny for the Highlanders.
They have not really had an established, top-class No 10 since Lima Sopoaga left after the 2018 season.
Mitch Hunt has been the best of a rotating cast of first fives that has included Josh Ioane, Marty Banks, Bryn Gatland, Cameron Millar, Taine Robinson, Ajay Faleafaga and internationals Freddie Burns and Rhys Patchell.
Robinson was a left-field choice to start the first seven games of this season, and Millar has started the past four.
Millar's progress appears to have stalled slightly, and while Robinson's final act of the game against Moana Pasifika was having his kick charged down for the game-losing try, he has returned to the No 10 jersey to play the Hurricanes.
''I felt sorry for Taine,'' Joseph said.
''All eyes were on him. I guess everyone in the stadium felt that was the problem.
''But I look at the first 15 minutes, where we didn't create enough rugby or enough scoring opportunities, and in many cases were quite flat, and that was disappointing.
''The bench came on and got us back in the game, and it came down to one kind of moment.
''Taine was good for us at the start of the season. Another position that's been inconsistent in terms of performances, and hampered by injuries. We just want to give him another go.''
A rejigged backline has Folau Fakatava back at halfback, Tanielu Tele'a at centre, a fit-again Jona Nareki on the left wing, and Jonah Lowe on the right.
With co-captain Hugh Renton seemingly gone for the season, Sean Withy moves back to No8, and Veveni Lasaqa starts on the openside flank.
Mitch Dunshea replaces Oliver Haig at lock.
Ten years after Joseph led the Highlanders to their sole championship by beating the Hurricanes in Wellington, he will hope to see similar inspiration from his troops tomorrow night.
''The Hurricanes are a quality side with lots of All Blacks.
''When we played them earlier, they were a team in a really tough position, and they've been able to battle their way out and into finals footy, which highlights the quality of their roster.''
The Hurricanes have lost star winger Kini Naholo to a season-ending knee injury, and All Blacks prop Tyrel Lomax is out with a sore ankle.

Just three years after retiring as a professional player, Evans has been rewarded for his contributions as an assistant coach at the Hurricanes and Hawke's Bay. He will join the All Blacks for their full 13-test calendar this year, before rejoining the Hurricanes for their 2026 campaign. All Blacks forward coach Jason Ryan said he and head coach Scott Robertson had been impressed by Evans' methods, which would provide a "point of difference". He's an ex-lineout caller, and he had 12-plus years playing in the UK and France, which gives him a broad range of experience and an understanding of the northern hemisphere approach. "It's going to be a good complement for us. Bryn brings a skillset that I haven't got in terms of how they call lineouts, what pictures they see. "We believe it's a real point of difference having him, and making sure our skills are dialled in and leading the way in that area. "We believe having Bryn in this space, analysing us and the opposition, is just what we need." Evans played twice for New Zealand, coming off the bench in home tests against France in 2009. Meanwhile, in-form midfield back Peter Umaga-Jensen has announced he will leave the Super Rugby Pacific team with a year to run on his contract to take up a club deal in Japan. His only test appearance came off the bench against Australia in 2020, but he was unable to remain near the front of a logjam of contenders after that. Umaga-Jensen, 27, finished the current season on a high, scoring two tries in a final-round hammering of Moana Pasifika, including a brilliant 50m solo score. "I started here as a young fella chasing a dream and it's been an incredible ride ever since," he said. "I've made memories that will stay with me forever and built lifelong friendships that I'll always treasure. "One day, I hope I'll be sitting down with all the boys, sharing a beer and a laugh, as we look back on everything we experienced together." Umaga-Jensen has not disclosed which Japanese club he will join nor the length of his contract. Ex Hurricanes, All Blacks Sevens star Salesi Rayasi in Fiji test squad

Photo: Photosport Former All Blacks Sevens and Hurricanes winger Salesi Rayasi has been included in the Fiji test squad after changing allegiance. Wellington-born Rayasi follows in the footsteps of his father Filipe, who played 13 times for Fiji in the 1990s. Rayasi, 28, has been named for Fiji for the first time in a 32-player squad for tests against Australia and Scotland next month. He played 50 games during his six seasons with the Hurricanes before taking up a contract with French club RC Vannes last year. He played in seven tournaments with the All Blacks Sevens between 2018 and 2020. Hawke's Bay halfback Sam Wye, 24, is also named by Fiji for the first time. Fiji coach Mick Byrne promised Australia and Scotland tough tests after naming a strong squad featuring 15 European-based players, Reuters reported. The Pacific islanders will play the Wallabies in Newcastle on 6 July in Australia's only warm-up match for the British & Irish Lions test series before hosting the Scots in Suva the following weekend. "We've announced a squad which is as strong as we're able to select, so that's excellent," Byrne said. "We're really looking forward to going over to Australia and putting on a great performance against the Wallabies and then coming home and playing against Scotland. "Both Australia and Scotland are established tier-one sides, and we know the level we need to rise to. This squad reflects our depth, strength, and we will give a performance that will make all Fijians proud." Alongside the 10 players who play their club rugby in France and five in England, the 32-man squad features a core of 13 players from the Fijian Drua Super Rugby team. "We've focused on combinations that give us both tactical adaptability and the trademark Fijian spirit," Byrne said. "We want to win but more importantly, we want to win playing our brand of rugby." Australian Byrne, who coached the Drua until last year, said Fiji's likely inclusion in the Nations Cup meant they needed to start thinking and acting like a tier-one country. Flying Fijians and Manu Samoa rugby squads revealed

Photo: Piui Simi / Samoa Observer Player omissions were noticed when the Flying Fijians and Manu Samoa head coaches announced their respective squads for upcoming international commitments. Flying Fijians new manager Paula Biu, himself a former national rep, announced a 32-member squad in Suva on Wednesday afternoon, minus veteran centre Semi Radradra, number eight Peceli Yato, Fijian Drua fullback Vuate Karawalevu and former All Black, Pita Gus Sowakula. Head coach Mick Byrne, fielding questions from the media after the announcement, said some players were unavailable because of club changes and movements. Radradra is moving to Japan but both Yato and Sowakula are in France, their absence raised by the media at the team announcement. Manu Samoa's anouncement on Tuesday also had the same effect with fans and the media asking where are some of the consistent performers with Moana Pasifika during the Super Rugby Pacific competition. Names mentioned included flanker Miracle Failangi, who was joint top try-scorer with Kyren Taumoefolau for Moana Pasifika this year. Also missing is livewire hooker Sama Malolo and halfback Jonathan Taumeiteine. Moana Pasifika quartet Failagi, Taumateine, Danny Toala and Lalomilo Lalomilo are busy with the National Provincial Championship in New Zealand. Hurricanes scrumhalf Ereatara Enari is also committed to NPC. Manu Samoa head coach, Lemalu Tusi Pisi, said the selection has been a mix of young and experienced players, who will rise to the occasion when needed to. A big addition to the Flying Fijians squad is that of former Hurricanes utility backline player Salesi Rayasi. Rayasi, who now plays out of France, is set to make his debut for the Fijians against either the Wallabies or Scotland in July. The Flying Fijians face the Wallabies in Sydney on 6 July and Scotland in Suva the weekend after, in their opening matches of the 2025 Test series. The Fijians will then defend their Pacific Nations Cup title from August, with matches against Tonga and Samoa, before the elimination series against Canada, USA and Japan. He thanked all the players who had stated their willingness to play for Fiji. He said some quality players have missed the final 32 announced. The initial squad had over 80 players. "We are very excited by the squad that we've named," he said. "Both Australia and Scotland are established tier one sides, and we know the level we need to rise to. This squad reflects the depth, strength; and we will give a performance that will make all Fijians proud. "We've got some very good experienced hands in there with a couple of young players that we've given the opportunity to." Byrne said the Flying Fijians now face the tough challenge of having to step up and play consistently as a tier one nation, with the team's inclusion in the Nations Cup competition from 2026. "We are excited by the future of the game for our Flying Fijians," he stated. "Over the past year we have been gven the oppoprtunity to play one or two tier one teams. As of next year we are in the Nations Cup," he said. "We are now part of the Nations Cup, which is a combination of both the Six Nations and the Rugby Championship competitions. We now need to step up as an organisation and as a group of players. "We need to adress the fact that we are now tier one and everything we are doing as an organisation and as a group must reflect that, and we are looking forward to the next window of opportunity to present Fiji to the world." Fijian Drua captain for 2025 Tevita Ikanivere will replaces former captain Waisea Nayacalevu, who announced his retirement from international rugby a week ago. New players named in the squad includes Drua halfback Philip Baselala, Hawkes Bay scrumhalf Sam Wye, Kavaia Tagivetaua and former Fiji under-20 captain Motikai Murray. Loose forward Niko Jones, who played for Old Glory in 2023, has been included in the Manu Samoa squad, like his father and former All Black star La'auli Savae Michael Jones did. Head coach Pisi said the fact that the Pacific Nations Cup doubles as a qualifier for the 2027 World Cup means they will have to be at their best. The Nations Cup will see Samoa meet Fiji and Tonga before getting into the eliminations against Canada, Japan and USA.
