The parents of a baby boy who died from a treatable bacterial infection say they are working to help others avoid a similar tragedy.Tim and Hannah Taylor-Smith lost Zachary in November 2022 from a condition called Group B Strep (GBS) just 14 hours after his birth at the Royal Derby Hospital.An inquest last year heard neglect had contributed to his death, and the trust which runs the hospital said it was "deeply sorry".Now Mr and Mrs Taylor-Smith, from Lichfield in Staffordshire, are working with the hospital trust to improve how it works with families as well as fundraising for a related charity.
GBS is a bacterial infection found in the vagina, rectum and bowel in 20 to 40% of women. GBS only presents a risk when passed to a baby around the time of labour, but as carriers have no symptoms, it can be difficult to spot.Chesterfield Coroner's Court was told Zachary was born at 36 weeks after his mother was induced because of recurrent asthma attacks.The inquest had heard he was initially healthy, but deteriorated.Midwives previously told the inquest "incorrect" actions were taken and that it was an error that Zachary was not reviewed by the neo-natal team.University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB), which runs the hospital, admitted that had antibiotics been given to his mum before his birth, or if Zachary had been treated for infection after birth, his death from Group B Strep could have been prevented.
Mr Taylor-Smith told the Local Democracy Reporting Service more needed to be done within the healthcare sector to increase knowledge of the infection.He said: "There is quite a lot [of information] out there, but for me personally, the issue surrounding it is those in the hospital profession seem not to think it is a viable thing to bring to the attention of those who are pregnant."We were not told about the risk of Group B Strep, and knowing about it could have been a different story. "There are so many things in the pipeline which will help raise more awareness. From raising our story, we've had so many people reach out to thank us because it has helped them."Mr Taylor-Smith took part in the London Landmarks Half Marathon earlier this month with the Group B Strep Support charity, raising about £16,000.
Sarah Noble, director of midwifery at UHDB, said: "As part of our commitment to improving maternity services, we want to ensure we continue to involve families and our communities in the changes we are making."We remain deeply sorry for what happened to Zachary, and we truly appreciate Hannah and Tim's openness, bravery and support in choosing to work closely alongside our teams – including sharing ideas for potential staff training and how we can best use the experience of families – as part of our improvement programme."

Morganne Smith, researcher at Illinois Institute of Technology, said: 'Individuals with pre-diabetes often exhibit impaired lipid metabolism and chronic low-grade inflammation, both of which can contribute to the development of conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. 'Our study found that bean consumption helped significantly lower cholesterol and reduce inflammation in people with pre-diabetes, although glucose levels were not changed. '(We) showed the benefits of consuming beans in adults with pre-diabetes, but they are a great option for everyone. 'These findings could be used to inform dietary guidelines, clinicians or public health programmes focused on preventing heart disease and diabetes.' In the study, people were randomly assigned to eat either one cup of black beans, chickpeas or rice (as the control group) for 12 weeks. Blood samples were taken at the start of the study, at six weeks and at 12 weeks to track cholesterol, inflammation and blood sugar. Glucose tolerance tests were conducted at the beginning and end of the study. For the group consuming chickpeas, total cholesterol significantly decreased from an average of 200.4 milligrams per decilitre (5.2mmol/L) at the beginning of the study to 185.8 milligrams per decilitre (4.8mmol/L) after 12 weeks, researchers said. For those eating black beans, the average level of pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 – a marker of inflammation – was 2.57 picograms per millilitre at the start of the study and significantly decreased to 1.88 picograms per millilitre after 12 weeks. Ms Smith suggested swapping less healthy foods for beans (whether tinned, dried or frozen) could be good for those wanting to eat more healthily. She added: 'There are a lot of ways to incorporate beans into your regular diet as a cost-effective way to support overall health and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. 'You can blend them to add some thickness to a soup base, add them as a salad topping, or pair them with other grains like rice or quinoa.' Tracy Parker, senior dietitian at the British Heart Foundation, said: 'Eating plant-based sources of protein like chickpeas, black beans and other beans, is consistent with the traditional Mediterranean diet that is linked to a reduced risk of heart and circulatory diseases. 'These are high in protein, low in saturated fat and excellent sources of fibre, which helps lower cholesterol and high blood pressure. 'This helps reduce inflammation which is a major risk factor of coronary heart disease. 'Just one portion – around three heaped tablespoons or 150g – provides about a third of the recommended daily fibre intake. 'Most pulses are cheap and are available already cooked and canned in water, making them an easy and nutritious addition to a balanced diet.'

6 things you need to know about Alzheimer's – as drug trials bring new hope

Led by an expert from the University of Nevada in the US and published in the journal Alzheimer's & Dementia: Translational Research and Clinical Interventions, the review reveals that 182 clinical trials are underway in 2025, a rise of 11% from the previous year, assessing the impact 138 potential drugs. Notably, one-third of these drugs are repurposed medications originally developed for other conditions like diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and high cholesterol. Alzheimer's and dementia are not the same thing 'A lot of people get confused between Alzheimer's and dementia and aren't really sure what the difference is,' recognises Taylor. 'The way I describe it is that dementia is the group of symptoms – so things like memory loss, confusion, personality and behavioural changes – and Alzheimer's is one of the causes of those symptoms.' Research generally associates Alzheimer's disease with the accumulation of two proteins, amyloid and tau, says Taylor. 'These toxic proteins damage our brain cells, which are what is used to communicate messages throughout our body,' she explains. 'Overtime, as more brain cells die, it becomes harder for our brain overall to carry out its normal functions. So, depending on where in the brain the damage starts, that indicates what kind of symptoms someone will experience. 'That's why in Alzheimer's early symptoms are often memory loss and confusion because Alzheimer's tends to, but doesn't always, start in the memory centres of the brain.' 2. There are 14 potential risk factors 'A lot of the risk factors for dementia are linked to our heart health,' says Taylor. 'So, we know that what's good for your heart is good for your brain as well. 'Things like having a healthy diet, exercising regularly, limiting the amount of alcohol you drink, not smoking, keeping your blood pressure and cholesterol under control etc is really important to improve or maintain our brain health and reduce our risk of dementia. 'These risk factors, there are 14 in total, have been linked to 45% of dementia cases worldwide. So, if those risk factors were completely eliminated, then up to 45% would be prevented or delayed.'3. It isn't an inevitable part of ageing 'A lot of people think it's an inevitable part of ageing, but it's definitely not – we can do things to reduce our risk of dementia,' says Taylor. While Alzheimer's disease is more common in older adults, it can also affect younger people. 'People as young as 30 have developed Alzheimer's and obviously that is quite rare, but it really does show that it's not just a part of ageing,' says Taylor. 'It's a biological disease and if something goes wrong, then we can try and find a way to make it right – that's where research comes in.' 4. It isn't just about memory loss 'I think a lot of people just think of Alzheimer's as memory loss, but it can affect a lot of different aspects of someone's memory and thinking,' highlights Taylor. 'Someone might become very confused and might not be sure of the time or the date, they might misplace things a lot or put them in odd places, like putting a TV remote in the fridge.' Alzheimer's can also really affect language skills. 'People might have problems finding the right words or understanding the meaning of words or might struggle to follow conversations, and that might mean that they become quite withdrawn,' says Taylor. In addition, there's a lot of links between Alzheimer's and mood and behaviour changes. 'People can become low in mood. other people may become more agitated or aggressive, and that's a really heartbreaking thing for someone to go through,' says Taylor. 'Getting a diagnosis means you can put things in place like the lasting power of attorney and sort out your will and finances while you have time. 'Getting an early diagnosis also means getting those treatments while they're likely to work best, and a diagnosis also provides more opportunities to take part in research, so the future generations don't have to go through the same thing.' 6. Remember to be patient with loved ones who have Alzheimer's 'Someone might change quite a lot when they have Alzheimer's, but it doesn't mean that they deep down aren't the same person,' emphasises Taylor. 'Someone's behaviour might change quite drastically throughout the course of the disease but it's not coming from a bad place. 'So, patience and understanding is really key when dealing with anyone with any form of dementia.
