Eastern Cape taxi boss gunned down in police firefight with protection racket syndicate
An Eastern Cape taxi boss was among six people shot dead during a police shootout on the R61 outside Mthatha on Monday – part of an intelligence-driven crackdown on alleged extortionists linked to protection rackets.
A well-known taxi boss in Mthatha was gunned down on Monday evening along with five suspects who were being followed by the police as part of an intelligence-driven operation.
'An intelligence-driven operation targeted individuals suspected of involvement in extortion activities within the area. Police stopped the vehicle and the suspects stopped. The suspects stepped out of the vehicle and opened fire on police members,' police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said.
'Officers returned fire in self-defence, resulting in the fatal shooting of all six suspects.'
She said on Tuesday that formal identification of the bodies had not yet been completed.
One of the men who died appeared in court two months ago on charges of extortion and intimidation within the taxi industry and was released on bail of R1,500. He was sought by the team investigating taxi violence in the province.
Transport and community safety MEC Xolile Nqatha expressed shock at the fatal shooting, which occurred on the R61 road between Mthatha and Ngcobo.
Nqatha has warned residents that police will not tolerate lawlessness.
'We have learnt with shock the fatal shooting of the six suspects allegedly involved in extortion. The incident is taking place as SAPS are working tirelessly to combat crime in the province. Police can arrest or stop anyone, regardless of their position or status, if they have committed a crime and will defend themselves when attacked,' Nqatha added.
The police remained on the scene on Monday night, conducting forensic investigations and processing evidence. Firearms recovered from the suspects will undergo ballistic analysis.
While not identifying the taxi boss as one of the deceased in the shootout directly, the office of the Abathembu King, Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo, said on Monday night that he wanted to make it clear that the taxi boss – whose name is known to Daily Maverick – did not have legal standing as a traditional leader in Mthatha West. He said the high court had confirmed this in 2023.
Dalindyebo had dismissed him as a headman of Mthatha West in 2023 and interdicts, brought by the taxi boss, were dismissed.
He explained that individuals were using the 'cover' of being a traditional leader as a way to extort money from residents.
Dalindyebo continued that the taxi boss was not a chief and after the death of Dalinzolo 'Sakie' Mareke, who was also not recognised as a traditional leader in Mthatha West, the Abethembu Kingdom had warned that criminal elements 'will be dealt with'.
Mareke was shot in similar circumstances in Mthatha in September 2024, also by the police's National Intervention Unit.
Mareke and his bodyguards had gone to the unit's headquarters in Mthatha after they learnt that the police had searched his house as part of an ongoing extortion investigation.
Dalindyebo suggested that Mareke was involved in an extortion scheme involving the proceeds of a cellphone network tower at Laphum'ikhwezi Primary School.
Mareke in turn held a meeting to raise money to sue the king for defamation.
Dalindyebo expressed his gratitude to the National Intervention Unit, and ended his warning to extortionists in the area with the words: Desist now.
The United Taxi Association of Mthatha also confirmed that six people, including the taxi boss, had been killed in the shootout. DM

Suspect arrested after 8 killed in Umlazi shooting
KZN Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has commended the arrest of a suspect in connection with the recent brutal mass murder that shocked the community of Umlazi. This follows the arrest of a 28-year-old man in connection with the murder of eight people on May 16 at the Zama informal settlement in U-section, Umlazi, south-west of Durban. The victims – six men and two women aged between 22 and 40 – were found lying in a pool of blood with multiple gunshot wounds. According to the police report, the incident took place when unknown armed men entered the informal settlement and opened fire. Eight victims died on the scene. The mass killing, which claimed multiple lives and left families shattered, drew national attention and widespread condemnation. Ntuli visited the affected area and called for a multi-agency response to restore peace and strengthen community policing. In a statement today, Ntuli hailed the arrest as a significant breakthrough. 'This arrest is a clear indication that our law enforcement agencies are capable, committed, and determined to restore safety and dignity in our communities. We commend the SAPS, the Hawks, and all intelligence-led operations that worked relentlessly around the clock to ensure this progress,' Ntuli said. Ntuli emphasised that the people of Umlazi and KZN at large deserve to live without fear, and 'no individual or group has the right to undermine the safety and security of our communities'. He added that the provincial government is intensifying its collaboration with the police and other safety structures to dismantle criminal syndicates, improve visibility in hotspots, and fast-track the installation of community-based crime prevention programmes. The premier also appealed to community members to work hand in hand with law enforcement agencies. 'Our fight against crime is a collective one. We urge residents to report any suspicious activities and to co-operate fully with ongoing investigations. It is only through unity and active citizenry that we can defeat crime and reclaim our communities.' As the case proceeds through the justice system, Ntuli assured that the provincial government will continue to provide the necessary psychosocial support to the victims' families and work to ensure that justice is served without delay. – Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. Residents decry escalating drug scourge in South Beach
MEMBERS of the community and business sector of Point and South Beach gathered at Addington Primary School recently for an imbizo involving the SAPS, Durban Metro, CPF and Business Against Crime. The area, known for its attraction of local and global tourists, is compromised by unabated crime, drug activities, homelessness, sex work, and theft, according to residents. The imbizo aimed to recap on the previous meeting and to raise concerns about the elements of crime that encircle the area. Highlighting recent crime statistics, Point SAPS Warrant Officer Mac Maharaj indicated that common robbery was the main contributing factor, related to cellphones. Also concerning was the theft out of motor vehicles. While he acknowledged that crime has decreased, he added, 'Drugs also rank high in the list of concerning crimes. This area has a lot of alcohol outlets, which also generate criminal activities. To fight these crimes, we conduct regular stop-and-search, foot patrols and vehicle checks,' said Maharaj. He warned of theft hotspots outside Addington Hospital, outside Tropicana and O.R. Tambo Parade. CPF chairperson Mandla Cebekhulu reiterated their commitment to fighting the scourge of crime and highlighted new programmes to be adopted to beef up this mission. 'We aim to forge stronger bonds with all structures of law enforcement, while we bring the community challenges forward and provide solutions,' said Cebekhulu. Colonel Joshua Nkhomo of Durban Metro Police raised the problem of the homeless, which has been ongoing despite conducting regular removals. 'The homeless community is vast and uncontrollable, and Social Welfare must address this issue. The Human Rights Commission also holds back the police from exercising their duties,' said Nkhomo. He added, 'Feeding schemes have contributed to the homeless situation. We urge the community to play a role in fighting this problem.' Ward 26 councillor Sibusiso Lushaba highlighted the progress made since the previous imbizo, noting the removal of the homeless and subsequent shutdown of a public toilet on Mahatma Gandhi Road, which had become a crime den. He warned against illegal dumping of house contents, which in turn attracts the homeless. Some disgruntled community members described the imbizo as a 'Talk Show' which yields no tangible results Community members say: · As vendors, we are grateful to the police for cleaning up crime elements. It's a good start, and we seek more to be done. · We see foreign nationals selling drugs and recruiting young boys to sell. · Police officers take bribes from criminals. · The City must take action against abandoned buildings, which have become dens for illicit activities. · The population of South Beach has increased, but SAPS personnel have decreased. No replacements, no vehicles. This is a worrying factor regarding the capacity to fight crime. For more from Berea Mail, follow us on Facebook, X and Instagram.
