Seattle Sounders players call for 'fair share' of Club World Cup prize money

Straits Times2 days ago

SEATTLE - Seattle Sounders players called for a bigger slice of the prize money for competing at the Club World Cup in June by wearing T-shirts emblazoned with "Cash Grab" and "Fair Share Now" ahead of a Major League Soccer (MLS) match on June 1.
Seattle are set to earn at least US$9.55 million (S$12.3 million) for competing at the June 14 to July 13 tournament in the United States, where the total prize money runs to US$1 billion, but under the MLS collective bargaining agreement (CBA) the players' share is capped at US$1 million per club.
Seattle are one of three MLS teams that will compete in the expanded 32-team Club World Cup. Teams from North America are guaranteed almost US$10 million just for participating and can earn more depending on their results.
MLS did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment after Seattle players warmed up in T-shirts with the phrases "Club World Cup Ca$h Grab" and "Fair Share Now" written on them ahead of their 2-3 home defeat by Minnesota United.
The MLS Players Association said in a statement on June 1 that players had "privately and respectfully invited the league to discuss bonus terms, yet MLS has failed to bring forward a reasonable proposal".
It added that the league was "clinging to an out-of-date CBA provision and ignoring longstanding international standards on what players typically receive from Fifa prize money in global competitions.
"It is the players who make the game possible. It is the players who are lifting MLS up on the global stage. They expect to be treated fairly and with respect."
Seattle are in Group B at the Club World Cup along with Brazil's Botafogo, Uefa Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and LaLiga's Atletico Madrid. They face Botafogo in their opening game on June 15. REUTERS

Elon Musk projects SpaceX revenue of about $20b in 2025

Elon Musk projects SpaceX revenue of about $20b in 2025 WASHINGTON - Elon Musk's SpaceX will record revenue of about US$15.5 billion (S$20 billion) this year, the billionaire said on June 3, underscoring the rocket maker's growing dominance in the commercial space sector. The company's commercial revenue from space will exceed Nasa's budget of roughly US$1.1 billion in 2026, Mr Musk said in a post on X. While Nasa continues to fund deep space exploration and research missions, SpaceX has leaned on growing demand for cost-effective launch services and satellite communications to generate revenue. The company is developing a 122m-tall Starship rocket system, which the world's richest person has said will play a crucial part in sending humans to Mars. The company's reusable Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets have significantly reduced launch costs, enabling SpaceX to secure a substantial share of the global launch market. In 2024, SpaceX achieved a record-breaking year with 134 Falcon launches, making it the most active launch operator globally. SpaceX is targeting to beat that record with 170 launches by the end of the year, the company said last week, as it attempts to meet growing demand for satellite deployment. Still, SpaceX's revenue is driven largely by its satellite internet service, Starlink, which Mr Musk has said will go public, but has not provided a timeline. In early November 2023, Mr Musk reported that Starlink had achieved breakeven cashflow. Under the Starlink banner, SpaceX has deployed thousands of satellites to deliver broadband internet globally. SpaceX and two partners have emerged as frontrunners to win a crucial part of US President Donald Trump's 'Golden Dome' missile defence shield, Reuters reported in April, citing six people familiar with the matter. Inzaghi leaves Inter after Champions League final thrashing

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Champions League - Final - Paris St Germain v Inter Milan - Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany - May 31, 2025 Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi looks dejected as he walks past the Champions League trophy after collecting his runners up medal REUTERS/Peter Cziborra/File Photo Simone Inzaghi has left his position as manager of Inter Milan, the Serie A club said on Tuesday, after a humiliating 5-0 loss in the Champions League final against Paris St Germain capped a trophyless season. Inter suffered a dismal end to their campaign with Saturday's thrashing in Munich coming after they finished second in Serie A, one point behind champions Napoli, and were knocked out in the Coppa Italia semi-finals 4–1 on aggregate by city rivals AC Milan. Inter face a race against time to appoint a new manager before the Club World Cup, with their campaign getting underway against Mexican side Monterrey on June 18. "The time has come for me to say goodbye to this club after a four-year journey, during which I gave everything," Inzaghi said in a separate statement. Inzaghi won six trophies at Inter: one Serie A title, two Coppa Italia triumphs and three Italian Super Cups. "I want to dedicate one last word to the millions of Nerazzurri (Inter) fans who cheered me on, cried and suffered in difficult moments and laughed and celebrated in the six triumphs we experienced together," he added. "I will never forget you." Italian media reported that Inzaghi will join Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal and will lead them in the Club World Cup in the United States. Inter confirmed that the decision for Inzaghi to leave the club was taken by mutual agreement earlier in the day. "I would like to thank Simone Inzaghi for the work done, for the passion shown and also for the sincerity in today's discussion, which led to the common decision to separate our paths," club president Giuseppe Marotta said in a statement. La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Como's Cesc Fabregas and Olympique de Marseille's Roberto De Zerbi are potential candidates to replace Inzaghi at Inter.
