Shoppers race to buy 'comfy' cooling mat for pets ahead of upcoming heatwave

Daily Record5 days ago

'We've been using this for a week now and the dog loves it, it does work and he feels noticeably cooler to the touch after lying on it.'
With the summer months finally here, many of us are hoping to experience some warm weather before dipping back into the colder seasons. However, as much as many people love the warmth, there are times where we need to cool down for a bit.
The same can be said for our beloved pets. While they have their own ways of regulating their body heat, it is important to have an area available where they can flop and cool down when it gets on the toastier side.
Amazon is currently selling the pecute Dog Cooling Mat which comes in a variety of sizes and is widely popular with shoppers. The mats currently have over 17,800 ratings and the medium edition (65cm by 50cm) is currently retailing for £25.42.
With prices and sizes ranging - an extra small is 40cm by 30cm (RRP £12.99) while an XXL is 140cm by 90cm (RRP £49.99) - there is a cooling mat available for all our four legged friends, whether they are big or small.
Made of 300D Oxford composite PVC material, the cooling mat is said to be waterproof, scratch-resistant and wear-resistant. The inner material of the mat features a gel that is safe for both human and pets, and there is no need to add water, freeze or chill the mat as it works by absorbing the pet's body heat.
For added convenience, the mat is foldable and can be put on dog beds, crates, kennels, couches, floors and the back seats of cars. Pet owners can also use the mat as it can serve as a seat cushion or a computer cooling pad. To clean the mat, shoppers only need to sprinkle some water on the surface and wipe it with a soft sponge or brush.

Alternatively, shoppers can buy the Bravpet Pet Cooling Mat from Amazon. The large edition (90cm by 50cm) is currently reduced to £20.89 in a limited time deal (RRP £24.00), however there are also medium and extra large mats available.
Over on Argos, the retailer is selling the Rosewood Chillax cool Pad for £20. Perfect for a medium-sized pooch, this mat is said to be cooler than its surrounding temperature for up to three to fours of constant use. With a cover made of polyester, this mat is great for dogs who are prone to overheating.
The pecute mat currently has a 4.3 star rating on Amazon and it is one of the retailer's top choices. Many shoppers have expressed how impressed they were by the cooling mat, with some even admitting to using it themselves.
One happy shopper said: "We've been using this for a week now and the dog loves it, it does work and he feels noticeably cooler to the touch after lying on it - it's really helped him through the recent heat spike.
"He's had a little scratch and the material hasn't torn or anything and remains strong, it seems to be pretty resistent and good quality at least so far."
Another customer added: "I have purchased 5 cool beds for my dog and 4 have burst (all brand names). This one is so much different! Made with different material from the rest, I'd find the others slippy and got hot when the sun was on them.
"This one is not like that because of the material, it stays cool even in the sun. It is slip resistant, looks nice, easy to fold and put away, blue so your dog can see it well. And comfy which is most important."
However, a few reviewers noted that their pet refused to use the mat. One person said: "As a product this works. It takes the heat from your pet and thus cools them down. I've tested it and it worked.
"Unfortunately, I could only test it on myself as my dog hated it and refused to use it, preferring instead to lie on the tiles and have a damp towel over him. Your dog might be fine with it."
Another shopper also wrote: "The cooling bed is cool for my dog when it's hot, the only problem I have is for him lying on it. He stays on it for a couple of minutes and then back off it again so not sure if it's the material he doesn't like but I stood on it myself and it definitely does cool down.
"So deducted 2 stars only because its been a waste of money but that could be my dogs preference and not the actual mat. If your animal stays on it then I would still recommend it."
Despite this, one shopper said: "I am shocked how cool this feels! I wasn't really expecting much but I am pleasantly surprised. One of my dogs has had a sleep on it already and I would happily do the same to keep cool on warm nights! Really pleased with it so far. Good size for my two pooches (whippets) so great size choice too."
With another five-star reviewer adding: "Love it as robust and slightly padded so much more comfy for my dog. Ordered the large for lounge and 2 xsmaller ones for dog bed and car."

Shoppers rave over compact handheld fan that 'puts out more air than a big fan'

'Perfect size to keep in a bag or put in your pocket on sunny days. The speed is insane - this really feels like a plug in fan.' With the weather getting warmer and festival season starting up, many of us are looking for ways to keep cool in the heat without having to head back indoors. One practical solution is to buy a handheld fan that you can quickly switch on when you are feeling too warm. Easily placed in a bag or a pocket, these compact devices will quickly become your must-have item over the summer months. While there are many cheap fans on the market, it may be worth investing in a rechargeable device that can give you the airflow you need and can last all day without draining its battery. For those happy to spend a bit more on a device that will last longer, Amazon is selling the JISULIFE Portable Handheld Fan Life9 for a discounted price. Normally retailing for £35.99, shoppers can now snap it up for 20 per cent less at £28.79. Equipped with a lanyard strap for extra accessibility, the Life9 fan uses an advanced nine blade design and a high speed three-phase brushless motor to provide maximum wind speeds of up to 10m/s. With an RPM of 40000, this compact device will deliver a strong and stable wind. With a battery life of up to 18 hours, shoppers will be able to keep themselves cool all day long no matter the occasion. They will also have a choice of five wind speeds to match the users personal preference and the environment they are in. Weighing only 170g, this ultra-small fan packs a punch and can easily be stored away in a pocket or bag to be easily grabbed at a moments notice. Charging the device is also a breeze as it is compatible with regular USB ports as well as laptops, power banks and car chargers. JISULIFE Portable Handheld Fan Life9 £35.99 £28.79 Amazon Buy Now Product Description For those happy to carry around something a bit bigger, Amazon is also selling the HandFan Portable Rechargeable Fan for £26.99. With a 6-inch outer frame and five blades, this fan will deliver a stronger breeze than that of smaller alternatives. With six speeds, the fan is able to last up to 34 hours in normal wind mode. Alternatively, Argos has dropped the price of the Bush Pink Handheld & Foldable Desk Fan. Normally retailing at £15, shoppers can now snap up the fan for £12 just in time for festivals to begin. This collapsible fan comes with three speed settings that can be controlled with a single push button. In the lead up to summer, over 900 Amazon shoppers have bought the Life9 Fan in the last 30 days. Currently boasting a 4.3 star rating, some reviewers were blown away by the power that this compact device possesses. One delighted shopper said: "I bought two of these fans for a trip to Mexico. These fans are great and have various settings for how strong you want the fan. They cool you down easily and are very powerful on the top setting. "I love the fact that there are no open fan blades and that they are usb-c rechargeable, you would find it difficult even on top setting to run out of battery in a day even with extensive use. As you go up the power settings the fan becomes louder but that isn't a problem for me. These really are the best handheld fans I have ever had, I'm very impressed." With another five-star reviewer adding: "This little fan puts out more air than my big fan. It feels like I am using an air conditioner. I charge during day and it runs all night and I only use it on the lowest setting." However, a few shoppers complained about the noise of the fan, as one person wrote: "Nice little fan, but the higher you turn the fan up the louder it gets, very loud on high." Another reviewer agreed: "This is a great little fan. It would easily fit into a pocket. I took it away on a recent holiday. There are five power settings and at the highest level it can get quite noisy, but frankly the output outweighs the noise level." Despite this, another top reviewer added: "Keeps me cool during those summer days and the battery life is good for such a compact fan with powerful air flow, with handy lanyard. All and all happy with this purchase." With a further shopper commenting: "WOW! I love love love this fan. Perfect size to keep in a bag or put in your pocket on sunny days. The speed is insane - this really feels like a plug in fan. Reminds me of a well-known brand hairdryer with the fan technology. "I have never been able to find a fan that has beat this. As somebody that suffers from bouts of hyperhydrosis, this has been a life saver. The fan head itself is small, but when held at a distance creates a wide range of breeze." Shaughna Phillips finds 'incredible' portable aircon unit for under £70

Shaughna was struggling to sleep in the heatwave and asked her followers for a 'miracle' - which she later found in the form of a portable air cooler When the heatwave strikes, even summer enthusiasts can find the balmy weather a bit too much, especially when it wreaks havoc on our sleep and concentration levels. Reality TV's Shaughna Phillips, known for her stint on ' Love Island ', took to Instagram recently in search of something miraculous to battle the sweltering heat. She didn't have to wait too long to find her answer. Say hello to the Igenix IG9703 portable air cooling unit - a small yet surprisingly mighty device that's making waves on Amazon, nabbing an irresistible price drop to £69.99. Shaughna tried out the cooler and declared it "incredible", and it's not hard to understand her enthusiasm. Despite its diminutive stature, this air cooler isn't your typical air con; you won't need to deal with any hefty installations or wall vents. Instead, it draws in hot air, funnels it through a water tank, and spews out a more refreshing, crisp breeze. Plus, there's an oscillation setting to spread the cold air far and wide instead of confining it to one corner, reports OK!. Featuring three fan speed options and a design that's easy to move around, the Igenix IG9703 is ideal for any room - be it bedroom, study, or lounge. It runs quietly enough to ensure your forty winks aren't disturbed and is compact enough to stash away once the hot spell passes. In an Instagram story, the reality star wrote: "I had this aircon unit in my old flat and forgot how brilliant it was. Dusted it off yesterday hoping it would keep me cool and it's incredible. It made my fan look pathetic. I'll find the name for you because you all need it." Shaughna isn't alone in her praise - the unit has garnered hundreds of positive reviews from shoppers who claim it's a total game-changer during muggy summer nights. And at less than £70, it's a budget-friendly choice that doesn't require any drilling or complicated setup. If you're on the hunt for a hassle-free solution to beat the heat, Shaughna may have just discovered your next summer must-have. However, if you're exploring different fans and aircon unit options, you can check out our roundup of 5 fans to beat the heat from Amazon, Shark, Dyson and more. Our head of shopping Zoe can also personally vouch for Dyson's Hepa Purifier Cool Fan, currently on offer for £449.99.

‘Like a warm autumn walk in the woods': the best supermarket runny honey, tasted and rated

Honey is a wonderfully versatile store-cupboard staple, and I always seem to have about three different types on the go at any one time. It's typically a squeezy bottle to bake with, a jar for sweetening teas and yoghurt, and something a little fancier and more complex to enjoy drizzled on buttered toast or with cheese. The Guardian's journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link. Learn more. Honey shouldn't just be 'sweet', though. Its taste, colour and viscosity are shaped by a range of factors – from the season it was harvested and the location, to the pollen of the plants nearby. Many cheaper options blend honey from more than one country, whereas single-origin honey is clearly labelled and typically has more distinctive, layered flavours specific to where it was produced. I'll happily be adding a few of these into my rotation, so much so that I sense a honey-themed dinner party is on the way. £4.90 for 250g at Sainsbury's (£1.96/100g)£3.92 for 250g at Amazon (£1.96/100g)★★★★☆ Noticeably less sweet than many of the others, and with a rich and complex malty flavour and savoury notes that I really enjoyed. This would be wonderful to cook with. £8.50 for 227g at Ocado (£3.74/100g)★★★★★ This won't be to everyone's taste, but I loved it. It's punchy and woody, with a bit of muskiness, too – almost savoury-leaning. It smells divine, like a warm autumn walk in the woods. £3.60 for 340g at Ocado (£1.06/100g)★★★★☆ Beautifully bright and citrussy. It feels quite fun and summery, too. This would be great in drinks and cocktails. £5.50 for 250g at Ocado (£2.40/100g)£5.40 for 250g at Amazon (£2.40/100g)★★★★☆ A delicious, well-balanced honey that would be perfect for drizzling on toast. It has a really appealing colour and a floral flavour that comes through softly. £3 for 340g at Asda (88p/100g)£3 for 340g at Morrisons (88p/100g)★★★☆☆ Leans on the sweeter side compared with the others, but is otherwise very neutral-tasting. A standard honey that would suit everyday use. Sign up to The Filter Get the best shopping advice from the Filter team straight to your inbox. The Guardian's journalism is independent. There's a lovely fresh and fruity citrus vibe, and it does indeed taste like summer. I can imagine it being great on scones and in cakes, especially while sitting in a sunny garden. £4 for 720g at Tesco (56p/100g)£3.15 for 720g at Amazon (50p/100g)★★★☆☆ An OK honey that would do the job for your honey needs. Some floral notes do come through, and it smells quite fragrant. £4 for 340g at Waitrose (£1.48 /100g) ★★★☆☆ A good all-rounder. It has quite a clean honey flavour and feels more neutral than some of the others. Fine for everyday usage, but doesn't really stand out. From £4 for 340g at M&S (£1.18/100g)★★★☆☆ There's a little smoky aftertaste, which I do enjoy. It's one of the runniest honeys and does lean quite sweet. £2 for 454g at Waitrose (44p/100g)★★☆☆☆ You pretty much get just sweetness here and not much else. Tastes more like golden syrup.
