WhatsApp cuts off support for older iPhones and Androids: Find out full list
WhatsApp has officially discontinued support for several older Apple and Android smartphones, effective 1 June 2025.
The decision is part of the messaging app's routine update cycle and is expected to push users with ageing devices towards modern alternatives.
The Meta-owned platform will now only function on iPhones running iOS 15.1 and above and Android phones using Android 5.0 and newer.
The original cut-off date, scheduled for 5 May, was extended by Apple to allow users additional time to transition.
Affected devices include:
iPhone 5s
iPhone 6
Galaxy S III
HTC One X
Sony Xperia Z
Though some reports also flagged the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus and the first-generation iPhone SE, these models currently operate on iOS 15.8.4 and will likely remain supported for at least another year.
In a statement posted on its Help Center, WhatsApp explained the rationale behind the change: 'Every year we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. These devices also might not have the latest security updates, or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp.'
While the update will not affect users of new iPhone or Android models, it underscores a wider industry trend of phasing out support for outdated hardware. Experts say the shift is not just about performance—it also helps improve user security by consolidating updates across fewer devices.
The move comes as WhatsApp continues to expand its platform with updates, including multi-device functionality and a long-awaited iPad app.
Users still relying on older devices are now being urged to consider upgrading.

ISLAMABAD: A global cybersecurity firm disclosed Wednesday that top five most popular Android apps among kids in Pakistan are YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Tiktok and Roblox. Kaspersky has released its annual report on kids' digital interests with the analysis, covering the period from May 2024 to April 2025. It revealed a growing fascination with AI-powered chatbots. YouTube remains the most popular app among children globally, while WhatsApp overtook TikTok for second place. In today's interconnected world, children are engaging with digital technology more than ever before. Recent studies indicate that 8 to 10 year-old children spend an average of six hours daily on screens, while preteens (ages 11–14) average about nine hours per day. In Pakistan top 5 of the most popular Android apps remained YouTube (42.90% of time spent on the platform), WhatsApp (16.07%), Instagram (8.97%), Tiktok (5.88%), and Roblox (4.44%), while Character. AI was 13th in the rating - used 0.97% of time. In this year's report, Kaspersky found a surge of interest in Artificial Intelligence tools. While no AI apps appeared in the Top 20 most-used applications in 2023-2024 time period, ' has now entered the list, showing that children are not only curious about AI but are actively integrating it into their digital lives. More than 7.5% of all search queries were about AI chatbots, led by well-known names like ChatGPT, Gemini, and especially — a platform that lets users create or interact with bots mimicking fictional or real characters. This marks a sharp rise from last year: in the 2023–2024 report, AI-related queries made up just 3.19% of all searches, increasing more than twice this year. The most common online activity among kids was searching on Google for streaming platforms — almost 18% of all queries were related to watching videos. Unsurprisingly, YouTube remains the clear favourite Android app, growing from 28.13% to 29.77% over the past year. WhatsApp rose to second place with 14.72%, overtaking TikTok (12.76%), while Snapchat and Facebook continued to decline. The clarification clears a key regulatory hurdle, paving the way for Apple to lead a new generation of wireless-only devices. Apple was previously required to switch from its proprietary Lightning port to USB-C to comply with the EU's Common Charger Directive. In the past, the European Union mandated the adoption of USB-C ports for all mobile devices to reduce electronic waste and streamline the consumer experience. But the law applies only when a physical charging port is present. The company has already removed SIM card slots in some models and is expected to eliminate more physical components to further reduce thickness and improve design. Under the deal, Meta's unspecified investment will replace state government subsidies to keep the Clinton Clean Energy Center operating beginning in 2027, offering the facility a crucial lifeline. The project, which takes over the plant's total electric output, will provide 1,121 megawatts of nuclear energy to support Meta's regional operations while adding 30 megawatts of incremental capacity to the electricity grid, the company said. 'As we look toward our future energy needs in advancing AI, we recognize the immense value of nuclear power in providing reliable, firm electricity,' Meta said in the announcement. The move comes as tech companies scramble to secure stable, clean energy sources to power energy-intensive AI data centers. Nuclear energy has gained renewed attention as companies and governments seek reliable, carbon-free power to meet climate goals while supporting growing electricity demands from data centers and AI operations.
