Fate of Oklahoma-Texas Heartland Flyer uncertain

OKLAHOMA CITY – The fate of passenger rail service between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth is on shaky ground after the Texas Legislature declined to fund that state's portion.
'The state of Oklahoma cannot fund that operation of our own accord,' Tim Gatz, Oklahoma Department of Transportation executive director, told his governing board Monday.
Gatz previously said the rail line would close as early as this month if Texas failed to fund it.
He was not available for comment Tuesday and Wednesday.
Gov. Kevin Stitt said he was disappointed Texas did not provide the funds.
'We're not going to pick up their end of that,' Stitt said Wednesday. 'And so we're not sure exactly what's going to happen with that connection.'
The Heartland Flyer, an Amtrak route between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth, is a jointly funded partnership between Texas and Oklahoma City. Oklahoma's portion for 2025 was $4.5 million.
The Texas Department of Transportation's budget for fiscal year 2025 included $2.81 million for the Heartland Flyer, said Laura Butterbrodt, a spokeswoman. She referred additional questions to Texas lawmakers.
Oklahoma lawmakers last month passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 10 urging Texas legislators to continue funding the service.
The service was reestablished in 1999 after ending in 1979.
'The Oklahoma State Legislature acknowledges the importance of the continued existence of passenger rail in Oklahoma, and understands that once removed, it would be extraordinarily challenging to restore this service and continue to provide an additional option for Oklahomans,' the SRJ said.
Nearly 82,000 rode it last year.
Officials were considering expanding it into Kansas allowing travelers to connect to other major routes.
'Kansas recently provided dedicated funding and authority for KDOT (Kansas Department of Transportation) to support passenger rail for the Heartland Flyer extension,' said Philip Harris, a spokesman. 'If the project were to stall in the study phase, evaluating the future use of those funds could be needed.'
If the project continues, its targeted operational date is 2029, he said.
Amtrak did not respond to a request for comment.

Two hundred people were stuck on the Metro-North train and 400 were stuck on the Amtrak, which was headed from Boston to Philadelphia. Laura Lambert, a passenger on the Amtrak train, explained her experience. 'There's a woman having a panic attack very, very upset, crying,' Lambert said. 'There's a woman with a cat and worried about her cat not having water. A little child has been worried.' Passengers on two trains were all transferred either by another train or bus towards New York. Passengers on the Amtrak train were able to resume service. Watch the full video in the player above. The announcement comes after the Texas Legislature declined to continue funding for its share of the 206-mile route. The Heartland Flyer is jointly funded by Oklahoma and Texas. The service, operated by Amtrak, was reestablished in 1999 after ending in 1979. In a statement Thursday, Amtrak said the Heartland Flyer faces imminent suspension no later than Oct. 1 unless Texas secures its share of funding. A more specific suspension date is expected to be announced later. 'Reliable rail service provides a vital transportation option for residents and visitors alike, strengthening regional mobility, economic development, and tourism,' said Amtrak President Roger Harris. 'With service that supports Texas' continued economic growth and the region's connectivity, sustaining the Heartland Flyer is essential to maintaining momentum and ensuring long term mobility in the region.' The Heartland Flyer makes stops in Oklahoma City, Norman, Purcell, Pauls Valley, Ardmore, Gainesville and Fort Worth. 'The Heartland Flyer is key to ensuring Fort Worth's continued success as a global destination and is central to the city's tourism industry, business community, and thriving economy,' said Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker. 'Fort Worth is the busiest Amtrak station in Texas – generating millions in economic impact annually – and as people continue to move to our region, travel reliability, mobility choices, and connectivity will be key to our competitiveness.' Gainesville Mayor Tommy Moore said he believed a solution could be found to keep the service. 'I'll keep fighting to make sure this critical service stays in place for years to come,' Moore said. Officials had been planning on extending the route into Newton, Kansas, to link to the Southwest Chief between Chicago and Los Angeles.
