Canady carries Texas Tech to first-ever Super Regional locking down Florida St. 3-0
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — NiJaree Canady surrendered two hits and her opposite field home run helped guide Texas Tech to a commanding 3-0 win over host Florida State on Thursday night in the Tallahassee Super Regional.
Canady, last year's National Player of the Year, threw just 79 pitches for the 12th-seeded Red Raiders (49-12). It was Texas Tech's first-ever win in a Super Regional and the Red Raiders are seeking their first trip to the Women's College World Series.

Game two of the best-of-three Super Regional is Friday. The fifht-seeded Seminoles (49-11) are competing for a 13th-trip to the WCWS.
The Red Raiders scored in the top of the first when Mihyia Davis led off with an infield single and Alexis Langliers followed with a single to left field. Lauren Allred grounded into a fielder's choice to send Davis to third before Allred stole second. A throwing error by FSU catcher Michaela Edefield allowed Davis to score from third for a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, Alana Johnson homered on a 2-1 pitch for the second run.
Canady led off the seventh with a first-pitch homer to right field for her 11th of the season. Now with a record of 29-5, she's only surrendered nine home runs this season.
Ashtyn Danley (14-2) took the loss for the Seminoles.

Associated Press EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Tomas Nosek had been dealing with the guilt of his puck-over-the-glass penalty ever since the Florida Panthers lost Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final on the ensuing power-play goal by Leon Draisaitl. He's not sure how long it took to get over it. 'It was tough,' Nosek said Friday after an optional morning skate. 'You don't want to be the one guy who costs us the game. But obviously everybody can make a mistake. It happened in a bad time in overtime, and it cost us the game. But it's in the past, and now we're looking forward to just keep doing my job.' Nosek gets to keep doing his job. Coach Paul Maurice said he was not making any lineup changes for Game 2 against the Edmonton Oilers. That means A.J. Greer remains out with an undisclosed injury, though Maurice said the fourth-liner is on track for Game 3 on Monday in Sunrise. The penalty 18 minutes into overtime came when Edmonton's Jake Walman was pressuring Nosek in Florida's defensive zone. Power plays are rare in OT in the playoffs with officials careful about not wanting to have too big an influence on the outcome, but sending the puck over the glass is an automatic call. 'Everybody's making mistakes," Nosek said. "I think it's a part of the game. It's a sport, and you just focus on the next game and preparing yourself for it like every other game.' Nosek, one of several newcomers who weren't around last year when the Panthers won the Cup, is in his second final after helping Vegas get there in 2018. He said teammates have been good about encouraging and supporting him since the costly penalty. "They've been really helpful," Nosek said. "The guys came to me and said, 'Don't worry about it.' It's good.' Linemate Jonah Gadjovich, who reported feeling great after missing some time in Game 1 because of injury, said Nosek shouldn't feel bad about the mistake. 'It happens," Gadjovich said. Stokely, Stevenson combine for 9 RBIs and North Carolina routs Arizona 18-2 to open Super Regional
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Hunter Stokely drove in five runs, Luke Stevenson drove in four and North Carolina rolled to an 18-2 victory over Arizona on Friday to open the Chapel Hill Super Regional. Jake Knapp allowed two runs on nine hits in seven innings. He improved to 14-0 with a 2.02 ERA. Tom Chmielewski finished with two scoreless innings. The top-ranked and No. 5 national seed Tar Heels scored eight runs in the first two innings, three on Stokely's home run that made it a 5-1 game in the first inning. Stevenson's three-run home run in the second made it 8-1. Stokely added an RBI-single in the fourth and another in the eighth inning. Stevenson drove in North Carolina's first run back in the first inning. Sam Angelo hit a three-run home run in the eighth and Kane Kepley's solo home run later in the inning made it 18-2. Gavin Gallaher had four hits and scored three runs. Kepley and Jackson Van De Brake each scored four times for the Tar Heels. The first five batters in the order had 13 hits and drove in 12 runs. (Photo by) Hours before the national title deciding game three of the Women's College World Series, ESPN reported that Stanford transfer and now Texas Tech pitcher NiJaree Canady inked a second historic $1 million dollar deal with the Red Raiders NIL collective, the Matador Club. Canady has thrown every inning of the WCWS for the Red Raiders, all 504 pitches. Canady led her team to a Game two victory at the WCWS on Thursday, June 5 that forced the winner-takes-all showdown. Canady is a superstar two way player as she currently boasts a 0.97 earned run average, 317 strikeouts, .156 opposing batting average, but also hits .280 with 11 home runs. According to her agent Derrick Shelby of Prestige Management, Texas Tech wanted to reward Canady for her outstanding play and keep her within the Red Raider program another year. He said, 'Nija Canady is the most electrifying player in softball. She's box office and she goes out every day and competes. The decision to stay at Tech was not difficult. This program has taken care of her. They have showed how much she is appreciated. The entire staff, her teammates, the school in general have been great." ESPN did not report the amount of the deal, but her previous year's deal was worth $1,050,024, $1 million in NIL money, $50,000 for living expenses, and $24 to represent her collegiate number. However, reported that they believe the deal is at least $1.2 million. Again, it is safe to say that Texas Tech, a program that has never even made the NCAA post season would not be in the WCWS, much less the championship series, one win away from a national title without Canady.
