Channel Nine is caught out making 'disrespectful' Adam Selwood mistake after the footy great's tragic death

Daily Mail19-05-2025

Channel Nine has come under fire over a glaring error in its televised tribute to Adam Selwood just hours after the AFL world was left reeling from the former premiership player's sudden death.
The network aired a graphic titled 'Tribute for Troy' while honouring Adam Selwood, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 41.
The mistake - confusing Adam with his late twin brother Troy, who took his own life three months earlier - sparked immediate backlash online.
'Good one Channel Nine. That person had one job. Get the name right. Disgraceful,' one viewer posted.
Another wrote: 'No proof reading. Very disrespectful.'
The tribute, broadcast by 9News Melbourne, featured Adam's image and ran during rolling coverage of the former Eagle's death, but the caption incorrectly honoured Troy instead.
Channel Nine aired this heading, using Adam Selwood's deceased brother Troy's name instead
Footy fans described the blunder as 'incompetent' and 'an insult to the family', with some calling for disciplinary action.
'That's such incompetence. What an insult to the family. Sack whoever is involved,' one angry footy fan posted.
It wasn't the only public mistake to overshadow the weekend's tributes.
Hours earlier, Wurundjeri elder Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin misnamed Adam during her Welcome to Country speech before the Western Bulldogs and Essendon match at Marvel Stadium.
While delivering a solemn address, Murphy Wandin said: 'Today we heard the passing of Troy Selwood, another young man too young. We are very saddened by his loss.'
The speech was intended to honour Adam Selwood but mistakenly referenced Troy, who died in February.
The mix-up was broadcast to a national audience and was quickly clipped and circulated on social media.
'Terrible by Aunty Joy. Incredibly disrespectful,' one viewer wrote on X.
'Who the hell proof-read Aunty Joy's speech?!' another asked
Others rushed to defend the respected elder, noting the difficulty of delivering a public address during a sensitive moment.
'I must have been watching a different version. I thought Aunty Joy did a wonderful job,' said one post that gained traction on Sunday.
The double blunder - first during the stadium ceremony then by Channel Nine - has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a weekend of solemn remembrance for a highly respected AFL figure.
Adam Selwood played 187 games for West Coast and was part of the club's famous 2006 premiership side.
His death comes just three months after Troy's, deepening the heartbreak for the family and intensifying the emotional weight of tributes.
Despite the public errors, the football community has rallied in support of the Selwoods.
Selwood had recently raised more than $25,000 for mental health charity zero2hero and was planning to run a charity race in Troy's honour next weekend.
West Coast players honoured Adam on Sunday afternoon with a moving tribute before their emotional win over St Kilda at Optus Stadium.
Captain Oscar Allen issued a heartfelt plea: 'We've lost a legend of our club and we just want to send all our love and support to the Selwood family.'
'Mental health is such a massive thing in society at the moment,' he added. 'I just urge anybody out there who is struggling with anything - please reach out.'

Under-pressure Brisbane Broncos take extraordinary measure after recent controversies and rumours of player unrest engulf the club

A recent number of controversial incidents have forced the Brisbane Broncos to take a huge measure to maintain the club's reputation. Following the fallout relating to Ezra Mam's car crash, Reece Walsh's punch video and the sacking of Marty Taupau, the Broncos have hired a crisis management expert, according to reports. Buzz Rothfield of The Courier Mail writes that Grant Williams, a renowned reputation management expert, has joined the club. The NRL journalist added that Williams was 'rushed in to protect the club and its brand'. The footy club have been dragged into several off-field controversies this year, and the club have opted to draft in a crisis management expert to provide advice on multiple operational matters. Rothfield adds that Williams, who has previously worked with the NRL's media and communications set-up and worked as an advisor to NSW Police commissioner Mick Fuller, will work with players and managers at the club. That work is due to pertains mostly to their responsibilities in line with the NRL's rules on conduct and social media use. Mam pleaded guilty to one count of driving with a relevant drug in his system and another count of driving without a licence for an incident that took place in Bardon, Brisbane, last October. He was fined $120,000 by the NRL and the Broncos and handed a nine-match ban after he had crashed into an Uber taxi, injuring a four-year-old girl. Meanwhile, the Broncos were left furious at Walsh after he uploaded a bizarre and worrying video of himself appearing to punch a friend with a boxing glove on. Another player, Taupau parted company from the football club on amicable terms after he had appeared to like a social media post openly criticising Michael Maguire. The Broncos boss himself has also had a turbulent induction to life at the Clive Berghofer Centre. Williams' website states that he is a 'public affairs, strategic communications and media management advisory, providing crisis, issues and reputation management to companies organisations, family offices, boards, chairs chief executive officers, professionals and individuals.' His website adds that Williams will: 'personally prepare you for any crisis or issue' as well as 'identifying risks before they happen and provide a 24/7 urgent and bespoke response when they do'. Williams told Rothfield: 'The Broncos are a tremendous club and I'm looking forward to supporting their team with strategic counsel where required.' On the pitch, the Broncos have had a mixed season, despite being pipped to be a premiership contender prior to 2025. However, they have struggled to consistently perform, with Brisbane having won only one of their last five matches. Earlier this week, boss Dave Donaghy has also criticised claims that there is a fractured changing room at the club, throwing his support behind Maguire. There have been suggestions that the Broncos boss is facing a player revolt, but Donaghy said: 'The talk of unrest is simply not true. 'I'm not there every day, but I have asked the football department to give me some feedback if there is some discontent and I've had nothing come back of that nature. 'I have asked questions. We had a board meeting last week, we had 'Madge' in to talk about things and one of the directors was at training and they called me and said the players have been nothing but positive of Madge. 'Myself and the directors walk around the club and we get a feel if there's some major issues. We see none of that. The issue we see is Madge has come into reset a team and it could take longer than we thought.'

Hugh Jackman looks in good spirits as he's mobbed by fans in New York despite claims ex Deborra-Lee Furness is 'planning to release divorce tell-all'

Hugh Jackman looked in high spirits as he was mobbed by fans outside Minetta Lane Theatre in New York City on Wednesday. The Australian actor, 56, was all smiles despite recent reports that his ex Deborra-Lee Furness, 69, is 'planning to release a divorce tell-all.' The revelations come weeks after Deborra-Lee filed official divorce papers, ending her 27-year marriage to Hugh and issuing a powerful public statement where she spoke of her 'traumatic journey of betrayal'. Brushing off his divorce drama, Hugh was noticeably upbeat as he departed the theatre following his incredible performance in the new play Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes. The Wolverine star cut a smart figure in a light blue Ralph Lauren polo top and dark blue trousers as he carried a large black backpack. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Hugh beamed as he greeted fans and signed autographs outside before heading home on his bicycle. Deborra-Lee is reportedly planning to release a no-holds-barred 'divorce diary' detailing her painful split from Hugh and the heartbreak that followed. The Australian actress is said to be currently documenting her emotional roller-coaster journey, with plans to publish the memoir once her divorce from the Wolverine star is legally finalised, according to New Idea. 'Deb's been desperate to have her side of the story out there,' an alleged source told the outlet. 'She's been writing down all her thoughts, the good and the bad, and logging every detail of this ugly roller-coaster divorce. As soon as her lawyers allow it, she will be talking to publishers about a deal.' Hugh and Deborra-Lee's split appeared to turn bitter when she spoke about her 'traumatic journey of betrayal' in the wake of her divorce filing last month. 'My heart and compassion goes out to everyone who has traversed the traumatic journey of betrayal,' she said. 'It's a profound wound that cuts deep. However, I believe in a higher power and that God/the universe, whatever you relate to as your guidance, is always working FOR us.' The revelations come weeks after Deb filed official divorce papers, ending her 27-year marriage to Hugh and issuing a powerful public statement where she spoke of her 'traumatic journey of betrayal' (both pictured 2023) 'This belief has helped me navigate the breakdown of an almost three-decade marriage.' She continued: 'I have gained much knowledge and wisdom through this experience. Even when we are presented with apparent adversity, it is leading us to our greatest good, our true purpose. 'It can hurt, but in the long run, returning to yourself and living within your own integrity, values and boundaries is liberation and freedom.' She concluded her statement with the 'one thing' she has learned, which is 'that none of this is personal.' Deb's emotional declaration signalled a turning point in what had largely been a quiet and dignified separation - until now. Sources claim that while Deb is remaining composed publicly, behind closed doors she's preparing to reclaim her narrative with a raw and honest memoir that could shine a spotlight on Hugh's new romance with Broadway star Sutton Foster. The New Idea insider added that the actress won't be holding back: 'She won't be silenced. This is her truth.' Daily Mail Australia reached out to Deborra-Lee Furness for comment. The Wolverine star cut a smart figure in a light blue Ralph Lauren polo top and dark blue trousers as he carried a large black backpack It comes as MailOnline revealed that Hugh and Deborra-Lee have put their (UK£28million) New York apartment on the market amid their messy divorce. reports that the former couple is offloading the stunning five-bedroom 'triplex' apartment in the West Village that they purchased back in 2008 for AU$32million (UK £23million). The penthouse boasts an eye-watering 1000 sqm of floor space and spans the top three floors of a glass tower overlooking the Hudson River. The three floors are connected via a spiral staircase, and the luxe abode also boasts seven bathrooms. It also features a library, private sauna and an indoor gym, while the kitchen boasts a massive island bench, stainless steel appliances and plenty of cabinet space. Designed by lauded architect Richard Meier, the property is described as a 'modernist masterpiece'. The main bedroom, meanwhile, occupies an entire floor and includes a luxurious spa bath and dressing area. Hugh and Deborra-Lee tried to offload the apartment back in 2022 but paused the sale in favour of putting it on the rental market. The listing comes after it was recently revealed that the ex-couple had decided to split their other New York abode down the middle. The former couple filed records with the city regarding their shares of their former love nest, as seen in documents obtained by Hugh and Deborra-Lee, who had been married since 1996, announced their separation back in 2023 after 27 years of marriage. At the time, they cited a desire to pursue 'individual growth'. Though the pair have not publicly revealed the reasons behind their separation, rumours have run rampant as fans speculate that Hugh growing close to his fellow Broadway co-star Sutton in The Music Man play was a factor in their split.

Laura Tingle's replacement on 7.30 officially announced as surprise pick is slated to take the coveted gig

The man set to replace Laura Tingle on ABC's current affairs program 7.30 has been officially announced. ABC political correspondent Jacob Greber will step into the coveted role of political correspondent, after rumours swirled for weeks that the journalist was the surprise pick for the gig. The announcement was made by 7.30 host Sarah Ferguson during Thursday night's show. 'I'd like to introduce my next guest, who is not really a guest at all. With an almost 30-year career in journalism covering politics, economics, and world affairs – all the things that we want,' Ferguson said. 'He's been a foreign correspondent as well and got a start working as a copy boy in the Canberra Press Gallery. You can't beat that.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Greber, who joined the ABC less than a year ago amid a lauded career in journalism, will step into the role from July 7. 'It's an incredible time to join 7.30 with Sarah Ferguson and the team. Our audience rightly demands clarity and insight about the people who govern us and the challenges we face as a nation,' Greber said. 'I also salute Laura Tingle – an absolute class act and fearless force of nature. I'm humbled and thrilled to pick up where she's left off.' Greber will fill the gap left when Tingle announced earlier this month she would replace John Lyons as the broadcaster's outgoing global affairs editor. Earlier rumblings suggested the role might have gone to any number of Canberra bureau insiders including chief David Lipson, national affairs editor Melissa Clark and Insiders host David Speers. Q+A host Patricia Karvelas and ABC Radio Melbourne host Raf Epstein ruled themselves out of the running when contacted by the Herald. Tingle, a double Walkley-Award-winning political journalist, will start new position mid-year while Lyons packs up to become the ABC's Americas editor. Among the nation's best respected political journalists with more than 40 years experience including six years in her latest post, Tingle leaves big shoes to fill. 'The job was advertised, and I applied for it,' Tingle told The Australian last week. 'It's the best job in journalism, I reckon, other than the one I have already got.' A fellow Financial Review alum, Tingle will spend the next two years travelling the world reporting on events 'that also shape our nation'. Despite publicly advertising its shift away from television towards digital, the flagship promise of former managing director David Anderson's five-year-plan, 7.30 remains the jewel in the broadcaster's crown. Presented by former Four Corners host Sarah Ferguson, the program boasted an average nightly viewership of 756,000 in the 2023-24 financial year according to ABC's annual reporting. A dip from Covid-era highs of the three previous fiscal years, the program nonetheless retained its popularity, despite fears of a fallout following the 2022 departure of the inaugural presenter Leigh Sales. Despite being lesser known than Karvelas or Speers, Greber would bring decades of broadcast and print experience and some cachet as a reliable face on News Breakfast, Insiders, Afternoon Briefing, Weekend Breakfast and, of course, 7.30. The more front-facing role brings with it a greater possibility for controversy of the brand Tingle has found herself mired in in recent years. Last year, she was accused of dropping the veil of journalistic impartiality when she accused then Opposition Leader Peter Dutton of stoking racism by raising immigration caps as a possible salve for the housing crisis. She said Mr Dutton's rhetoric had sent a 'terrible chill running through me' before, at the same Sydney Writers Festival event, describing Australia as 'a racist country'. ABC news director Justin Stevens later said Tingle's comments, albeit not made in a work capacity, had prompted the broadcaster to remind her of the 'application' of her 'conversational' rhetoric to 'external events'. Before Tingle's six-year stint on 7.30, the coveted role was something of a hot potato having passed through the hands of four presenters in the six years between 2012 and 2018. She replaced Andrew Probyn who was more recently made redundant as the broadcaster's political editor in 2023. Internal ABC documents reportedly said the move was part of a calculated efforts to reform the Canberra bureau's 'outdated, top-heavy structure still largely focused on linear television broadcast'. Greber's appointment to the newly-minted role of chief digital political correspondent was widely considered a de facto planting of the flag in the broadcaster's 'digital-first' strategy.
