Matt Sherratt and his coaching team have already started to plan a way Wales can end a 17-game losing streak by beating Japan this summer.
The interim Wales head coach will be joined by Harlequins coach Danny Wilson (forwards), Gethin Jenkins (defence), Adam Jones (scrum) and T. Rhys Thomas (skills) in Japan. In normal circumstances Wales would look to use a trip which coincides with a British & Irish Lions tour to blood players, but these are strange times.
Wales only have two players on the Lions tour - Jac Morgan and Tomos Williams - while Sherratt is merely keeping the seat warm before the Welsh Rugby Union find a long-term replacement for Warren Gatland.
But more importantly than that Japan (13th) are ranked just one place below Wales (12th) in the World Rugby rankings.
Defeat this summer would weaken Wales' Rugby World Cup seeding and potentially see them drop into a pool which contains a further three tier one nations.
There cannot be too much mixing and matching this summer because Wales really need to win this one. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby.

So, what are the biggest conundrums facing Sherratt this summer and what could he do differently from the Six Nations?
During the Six Nations Sherratt was handed over a squad at a really low ebb midway through the Championship and it would have been extremely difficult to change too much.
Yes, there was a shift in terms of the way they moved the ball but this summer Sherratt and his coaching team will be able to get through far more detail in the lead-up to the tour.
This is now his squad and he will be able to stamp his own authority on the team.
Japan are not the same quality of team which toppled South Africa at the 2015 World Cup or reached the quarter-finals four years later by disposing of Ireland and Scotland, but they remain a dangerous outfit.
They are also coached by Eddie Jones and given Wales' recent struggles will fancy their chances of taking a tier-one scalp.
Sherratt and his players must be prepared for that, along with the searing heat they are likely to experience in Kitakyushu and Kobe.
But arguably the biggest challenge Sherratt will face is what style of rugby to adopt.
Traditionally Sherratt likes his team to play with speed and width, with players backed to play what is in front of them, which is in stark contrast to Gatland's risk-averse philosophy.
But if they go down that road they will need to be accurate and it is worth noting that Japan aren't the biggest of sides, so they will undoubtedly look to play with speed and tempo.
That is the style of rugby which took three significant scalps at the 2015 and 2019 World Cups.
Japan will want to draw Wales into a fast and loose game, hoping their skill levels and the potential heat can get them over the line.
Wales need to ensure the pack dominate physically and the set-piece functions well but they do have two outstanding coaches in Wilson, who will take charge of the forwards, and scrum guru Jones.
It will be interesting to see who Sherratt opts for at inside centre but in all likelihood it will be Ben Thomas who has served him well at Cardiff. Join WalesOnline Rugby's WhatsApp Channel here to get the breaking news sent straight to your phone for free
Thomas is a very talented footballer with a strong kicking game and is in the mould of a Southern Hemisphere second five-eight.
But in-form Scarlets centre Johnny Williams is the more powerful carrier and is capable of making significant post-contact metres.
Williams is a player Japan won't want to face because they will have difficulty containing his carrying game, and this is a big tour for the Scarlets man who fell out of favour with Gatland.
What also favours Williams is the fact his Scarlets midfield partner Joe Roberts is highly likely to start at 13 because cohesion is vital at Test level.
As always the breakdown will be key and Wales will want to slow down the speed of Japan's ruck ball with both Tommy Reffell and Scarlets captain Josh Macleod set to play important roles on this tour.
If Japan are forced to play on the backfoot then it will be very difficult for them to score points against Wales due to the lack of size and power in their side.
In terms of players it's a big tour for both Sam Costelow and Dan Edwards.
Costelow is now an experienced player and needs to bring his excellent Scarlets form onto the international arena by becoming a leader in the group.
Kieran Hardy is also playing the best rugby of his career for the Ospreys and it would be hugely beneficial for Wales if he was able to exert some serious pressure on Tomos Williams in the autumn.
Up-front, tighthead prop is a problem position in Wales therefore it is a huge positive to see Archie Griffin return. Get the latest breaking Welsh rugby news stories sent straight to your inbox with our FREE daily newsletter. Sign up here.

But what is intriguing is the selection of Dragons prop Chris Coleman because Wales really needs to build some depth at tighthead.
But the biggest priority is winning both Tests because if Wales lose even one they will have hit a new low.

Liverpool prepare record transfer offer as final Florian Wirtz obstacle emerges
Liverpool are looking to add more talent to their team and negotiations are underway with Leverkusen to secure a deal for Florian Wirtz in a deal that could set a British record Liverpool wasted little time in getting to work in the transfer market after winning the Premier League title in Arne Slot's first season. The Reds boss inspired his side to victory despite limited transfer activity last summer but there's been a change in tact this year. The Anfield side have already signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen having allowed Trent Alexander-Arnold to exit. The full-back joined Real Madrid a month before his contract expired, with the Merseyside team bringing in £10million. And now Liverpool are looking to add more talent to their team. Negotiations are underway with Leverkusen to secure a deal for Florian Wirtz in a deal that could set a British record. Slot is also looking to bolster his options at the back with a bid expected for Milos Kerkez. The Bournemouth defender is expected to add competition for Andy Robertson. Wirtz obstacle Bayer Leverkusen still expect Florian Wirtz to join Liverpool despite rejecting two offers, it has been claimed. The Reds' second bid fell short of Leverkusen's £126m asking price but they continue to lead the race to sign the superstar. According to Bild, Leverkusen higher-ups don't consider the move to be in jeopardy and the transfer fee is the only remaining obstacle. The same outlet reports that Liverpool and Wirtz have already agreed terms. A players-plus cash deal could offer a solution, while another suggestion is Liverpool could present a bid which will only hit Leverkusen's valuations if bonuses are triggered. Harvey Elliott and Jarell Quansah are among those being touted if the German club get a player as part of the transfer. Deco on Barca business Barcelona sporting director Deco says that targets Marcus Rashford and Luis Diaz should not be expecting any imminent transfer offers. In an interview with BBC Sport, the former Portugal international explained the club's priorities currently lie elsewhere. "We have been focusing on renewing contracts, after that, we'll discuss players to come," he said. "Of course, these two players, like you mentioned, they are good but have contracts in their clubs, so we won't speak because it's not fair. But when you decide to go to the market, for sure, we find some names. In my opinion, we don't need to bring many players. "When I speak with the agents of the players, everyone wants to come or stay. So this is important. The image of the club is still good. We are proud because Barcelona is still such a big club, and the way we are playing football makes players want to come." Wirtz approval Liverpool's Fenway Sports Group (FSG) ownership have sanctioned the prospect of a British record bid to sign Florian Wirtz, according to reports. The Reds could now make a £118m bid for the Germany ace, a larger fee than Chelsea paid for former Liverpool target Moises Caicedo. The Anfield side are said to preparing to make their third offer in the coming days having twice not met Bayer Leverkusen's demands.

Man Utd 'confident' of landing Bryan Mbeumo in £50m deal as transfer plan clear
Manchester United are set for a busy summer in the transfer market and already a pattern is becoming clear at Old Trafford ahead of Ruben Amorim's first pre-season at the club Manchester United have moved on from Liam Delap and will now look to sign Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo in a £50million deal this summer. The Red Devils are growing increasingly confident of being able to lure the forward to Old Trafford after the striker indicated he wanted to move to the club. United will be required to fight off interest from the likes of Newcastle and Arsenal to secure the Cameroon international. Ruben Amorim is said to be keen to make Mbeumo, who scored 20 goals in the Premier League in 2024/25, an integral member of his team. The Red Devils have returned their attention to Mbeumo after missing out to Chelsea for Ipswich Town Forward Delap. The 22-year-old former Man City youngster is primed to be announced as the Blues' newest signing after undergoing his medical, with Chelsea having agreed to pay his £30m release clause. United will hope to continue to strengthen Amorim's hand after announcing their first deal of the summer of the weekend. The 13-times Premier League champions confirmed a deal for Matheus Cunha after agreeing a £62.5million deal with Wolves. The Brazil forward was present in Manchester over the weekend before departing for international duty. The club want to replenish their front line after failing to see a member of their squad reach double figures in the Premier League's goalscoring charts. But United's attention turning to Mbeumo also appears to suggest an emphasis on targeting Premier League talent. That would appear to see the club taking a different approach to recent seasons. Last summer saw some heavy spending as the likes of Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee were brought in from abroad and the season before that saw only Mason Mount arrive from England's top-flight. And in 2022/23, the signings of Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro stole the headlines, though United did take advantage of Christian Eriksen being available for free It perhaps comes as little surprise that the club would look from within the division after struggling to 15th in 2024/25. And United's issues were all the more evident domestically, as they earned their way to the final before coming unstuck against British opposition in Tottenham. United boss Amorim has previously highlighted why he believes issues have been found when playing more familiar opposition. "When you play against any team in England, the physicality is there," he said. "If you don't have physicality, you will struggle a lot. Antony is so much better now in Spain. There are many factors, but I guarantee you it's physicality." And bringing players in who already have Premier League experience, and have thrived in the environment, such as Cunha and Mbeumo, would not only improve the team but potentially require less time to adjust. After a dismal start for Amorim, he will hope such players at least offer part of the answer.
