York tennis club serves up free sessions to get more children playing
A YORK tennis club is serving up a summer of free sessions to encourage the city's next generation of players.
With Wimbledon fever growing ahead of the main action starting next Monday 30 June, Rowntree Park Tennis Club is hosting events in a bid to give more young people a taste of the sport without any cost.
Volunteers from the club are helping to run two mornings of tennis competitions for a total of 90 girls from secondary and primary York schools over the next two Fridays (June 27 and July 4).
Rowntree Park Tennis Club is also offering two hours of free and supervised tennis to boys and girls, aged 10 to 14, every Thursday, from 4pm to 6pm, until the end of August.
Ian Bews, who has been secretary at the club for four years, said the free activities were part of its 2025 campaign to get more youngsters on the courts without cost being a barrier to playing.
The club has purchased rackets and balls for the children to use and secured a grant from the Lawn Tennis Association to cover the coaching costs.
Club coach, Jill Le Pla, has been delivering 10 hours of free tennis coaching in Millthorpe School, All Saints School, Westfield Primary and Hob Moor Primary.

'Schools struggle to offer tennis because of the facilities required and the necessary specialist knowledge required to coach it. Tennis is often only accessible to children whose parents can afford to pay for court hire, or membership, and expensive equipment.
'The club's objective for 2025 is to blow away these barriers and get lots of kids playing tennis at our club and playing at zero cost to them in weekly junior club sessions. We hope that they will become tennis players for life either at our club or elsewhere.'
Ian said the club was particularly keen to get girls involved as there was often a drop in numbers involved in sport on reaching secondary school.
'As a club we need a pipeline of future members to keep the club going. We also want a younger input in matches. Hopefully, the juniors will develop over the coming years and play in our teams.
'More importantly it is about bringing the park alive. Those courts are pretty quiet mid-week so we thought why don't we offer them free for children to play.
'It is fabulous from our point of point to have kids playing, particularly girls. Ladies' teams at many clubs struggle to get players. In our club, for very four men in the club there's one lady. We are trying to balance out that gender difference.'
Aware that youngsters might be accompanied to sessions by grandparents, the club committee purchased and fitted a defibrillator earlier this year in case of a coronary emergency – the next nearest defibrillator was on Bishopthorpe Road.
The club leases the six tennis courts in Rowntree Park from City of York Council and has full responsibility for their maintenance. Three courts are available for the public to hire, and the other three are for exclusive use by the 200 club members.
For information about the Thursday sessions, visit the club website here or email Jill Le Pla at jlptenniscoaching@gmail.com

A clear message from Eustace
Derby County held their fan forum last night at Pride Park as supporters questioned head coach John Eustace and CEO Stephen Pearce. Firstly, it was great to see Eustace in that environment - engaging and funny but absolutely sure of what he needs going forward into next summer and, sat alongside his CEO, his message was clear for all. Advertisement Eustace outlined attackers as the focus this summer, highlighting the lack of goals last season, and confirmed they'd like to add two to three exciting attackers. This falls in line with his plan to play a 4-2-3-1 formation going into next season. "I'd love to play a back four, some exciting attacking wingers and two good strikers," Eustace said. That back four may look different on the opening day of the Championship season. Eustace revealed they will be without defenders Curtis Nelson, Ryan Nyambe and Sondre Langas following injuries sustained last season. Looking at the big picture, as the club continue their huge pitch renovation at Pride Park, they will also be refurbishing the home changing room and all pitches at their training base at Moor Farm. Advertisement It was announced last night that the club have undertaken an academy restructure as they introduce a B team model which will serve as an extension to the first-team environment at the club. The B team will be led by Keith Briggs and participate in the Central League and Derbyshire Senior Cup, while the under-21s remain the same. There was no update on the club's search for investment and Pearce reiterated their business plan under David Clowes is going to plan. The head coach was asked what would make a great season. He suggested the play-offs would be an excellent campaign but went back to a familiar message of patience, highlighting the two-to-three year build both he and the club are on to get them back to the Premier League. Advertisement The night ended on a fun note but one that will carry weight when the new season arrives. A supporter asked for a less stressful campaign - and Pearce echoed that with Eustace. The Rams boss' response was short but sweet - "Only if you get the players".

Brentford in advanced talks with investors over minority sale
Brentford are in advanced talks with English filmmaker Matthew Vaughn and South African businessman Gary Lubner over the sale of a minority stake in the club, per The Athletic. The Bees' owner Matthew Benham has been seeking fresh investment to help fund the Premier League side for several years. Advertisement In February last year, the 57-year-old hired multinational private and merchant bank Rothschild to oversee the potential sale of a stake in the West London club. Now they are closing in on an agreement with Vaughn and Lubner, with Benham interested in selling 10-20 per cent of his shares at a total valuation of around £400 million for Brentford. The club plan to invest this money in helping them be more aggressive in the transfer market, fund further additions to Best Intentions' multi-club group and boost their commercial department. Benham initially provided interest-free loans to his boyhood football club before taking full control in 2012. Advertisement The British businessman has helped transform the fortunes of Brentford, pouring more than £100m of his own wealth into the team since 2005. They were competing in League One when Benham first became the owner, but led them to Premier League promotion in 2021. He has overseen the Bees' move to the Gtech Community Stadium and established them in the English top-flight under manager Thomas Frank, who recently left to join Tottenham Hotspur. With external investment, Brentford want to consistently challenge for a place in the top 10 and European qualification.

Carlisle Racecourse set for historic Bell and Plate Day
The Carlisle Bells are regarded as the oldest sporting trophies in the world (Image: Supplied) Carlisle Racecourse is set to host another historic day of racing as the Carlisle Bell and Plate Day is held today. Today's meeting at the Durdar Road venue sees the Carlisle Bells up for grabs – deemed the oldest sporting trophies in the world, dating back to 1559 and the reign of Elizabeth I. Advertisement While the ornate Bells are kept safe throughout the year in Tullie museum in the city, they will be on show on the day as owners, trainers and jockeys will be vying to add their name to the race's illustrious roll of honour. The Agma 20 Years of Franklin Ownership Carlisle Bell Handicap (4.50pm), run over an extended seven furlongs, has a maximum field of 17 runners. Helen Willis, general manager at Carlisle Racecourse said: 'Carlisle Bell and Plate Day is one of our favourite events of the year. 'It's steeped in history and never fails to deliver when it comes to sporting brilliance.' Racing at Carlisle was first recorded way back in 1559 at Swift during the second year of Queen Elizabeth I's reign, when the Carlisle gold bell, donated by Lady Dacre, was presented for the first time. Advertisement Many years on, the 426-year-old bells are still the prize for the winner of Cumbria's most celebrated flat race and, this year, in a bid to further honour the legacy of the day, bosses at the racecourse have renamed a further race, The Carlisle Bell Consolation Handicap, as the Lady Dacre Bell. Racing at the prestigious meeting gets under way at 2.15pm today (Image: PA) Willis added: 'Renaming the race in honour of Lady Dacre felt like a fitting way to pay tribute to the history of the day.' The day's card also features the Cumberland Plate, Listed Eternal Stakes plus a Novice Stakes, offering over £180,000 in prize money throughout the afternoon. Advertisement 'Both feature races are generously supported by long-term sponsor Stablemate by AGMA who are celebrating 20 years of ownership by the Franklin Family with us,' added Willis. The most valuable race of the day is the £47,000 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Eternal Stakes, a Listed race over just short of seven furlongs for three-year-old fillies. Fresh from three winners at Royal Ascot last week, including the Gold Cup on Trawlerman, dual champion jockey William Buick looks to hold a leading chance in this contest aboard Godolphin's Verse Of Love. Trained by Charlie Appleby, the daughter of Siyouni has been successful on two of her three starts. Tickets for Carlisle Bell & Cumberland Plate Day are still available and can be purchased online at Advertisement The first race gets under way at 2.15pm.
