Oregon's Dan Lanning ranked among college football's top head coaches ahead of 2025 season
The hierarchy of head coaches in the college football world has seen a bit of a shift over the past couple of years, both both Nick Saban and Jim Harbaugh leaving. While Georgia Bulldogs' coach Kirby Smart is undoubtedly at the top of the rankings with a pair of national championships in the lat five years, the spots around him in the rankings are up for grabs.
Going into last year, it was unclear who would be able to step up and claim the No. 2 spot behind Smart, but Ohio State's Ryan Day did a good job of solidifying his spot. But who rounds out the rest of the rankings?
This past week, USA TODAY put out its official list of the top coaches in the sport, and Oregon Duck fans should be happy about where Dan Lanning stands. While he may not be quite up there with the Smarts and Days of the world because of his lack of postseason success through his first three years at Oregon, few coaches in the landscape are better at recruiting and teambuilding than Lanning thus far.
Here's where he stands in the USAT rankings:
While Oregon fans would likely take Lanning over several of the names in front of him, it's hard to argue against his place at No. 6 based on his postseason track record. The Ducks are 2-1 in bowl games under Lanning but 0-1 in the College Football Playoff, with a blowout loss to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl last year as the No. 1 seed in the nation.
Oregon is strongly believed to be on the horizon for postseason success, though. The Ducks are ranked in the top 10 for the 2025 season and are projected to return to the CFP again. If Lanning and his team can keep stringing together impressive seasons and continue to compete for Big Ten and national championships, he should move up this list in no time.

Dan Lanning Posts Immediate Reaction to Oregon's Big Recruiting News
Dan Lanning Posts Immediate Reaction to Oregon's Big Recruiting News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning had one of his most successful seasons in his third year. He accumulated a 13-1 record while reaching the Rose Bowl, eventually losing to Ohio State. Advertisement Now, throughout the offseason, Lanning has made it clear that the Ducks are continuing to build for the future, and much of that hinges on their strong ability to land talented players out of high school. So far, Lanning has assembled a 2026 recruiting class that features seven commitments, ranking No. 3 in the Big Ten and No. 10 in the nation, but it's clear he wants to focus on even further in the future. On Monday, Oregon received a commitment from 2027 defensive lineman Cam Pritchett. Minutes after On3's Hayes Fawcett announced the news, Lanning reacted to the post on X with a duck emoji. Of course, landing Pritchett is very exciting for the Ducks, as On3 ranks him as a four-star recruit, the No. 16 defensive lineman, the No. 5 player in Alabama and the No. 167 player in the nation. Advertisement Standing at 6-foot-2.5 and 250 pounds, he still has two more years to develop in high school until officially hitting campus for Lanning and the Ducks. In his two seasons at the varsity level for Thompson High School, Pritchett has been impressive. He appeared in 26 games, accumulating 118 tackles, 22.0 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks and one forced fumble. Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning. Ryan Williams Reveals Conversation With Jeremiah Smith During College Football 26 Cover Shoot
Ryan Williams Reveals Conversation With Jeremiah Smith During College Football 26 Cover Shoot originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Alabama's Ryan Williams and Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith were two true freshmen playmakers who stole the show last season. Advertisement Both wide receivers appeared on the Freshman All-American teams and Smith broke out in a big way thanks to the Buckeyes winning a national championship. With the pending July 10 release of EA Sports College Football 26, Smith and Williams are expected to be a significant part of the game's marketing, given their status as premier players from two of college football's biggest programs. Williams, while being interviewed by On3's Andy Staples, revealed the topics of conversation shared with Smith during the game's cover shoot. "Whenever we were in Pasadena, of course, we talked about last season and him winning a national championship. I was super happy for him," Williams said. Advertisement Smith finished the 2024 season with 76 receptions for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also ran for one touchdown and rushed for 47 yards. In addition to being the Rose Bowl MVP, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound receiver was Big Ten Receiver and Freshman of the Year as well as a first-team All-American. Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver Ryan Williams (2).Will McLelland-Imagn Images "But you know, we both agreed that although last year was super fun, super great and we both had good freshman seasons," Williams continued. "We left a lot on the table. Just with that experience from last season, we're still super excited for what's to come this season." Williams ended last year with 48 receptions for 865 yards and eight touchdowns. He also added 48 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. Advertisement Expectations for both Ohio State and Alabama are high, as it should be for two of the biggest schools in the country. In ESPN's latest way-too-early rankings, the Buckeyes are Crimson are listed at No. 5 and No. 9, respectively. Both programs have yet to name a starter at quarterback after each school lost last season's starter to the NFL draft. Alabama and Ohio State both begin next season on Aug. 30, with the Buckeyes hosting the Texas Longhorns and the Crimson Tide traveling to Tallahassee to play the Florida State Seminoles. NHL Insider Links Ducks With Former Joel Quenneville Star
NHL Insider Links Ducks With Former Joel Quenneville Star originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Anaheim Ducks are entering a crucial offseason following another year of missing the playoffs. Despite a big jump in the standings, Anaheim was still left on the outside looking in on everything. Advertisement But the team has already made some moves to rectify that, bringing in veteran head coach Joel Quenneville. Quenneville gives Anaheim an experienced leader behind the bench, and someone who understands what it takes to win at the highest level. While Quenneville is now with the team, the roster also needs a massive upgrade as well. Anaheim could be looking for both home-run hitters and sleeper, low-risk, high-reward players to help round out the team. One name that has made its way around NHL circles of late is that of former Chicago Blackhawks star Jonathan Toews. Toews is expected to make a comeback to the league after being away from the NHL for the last two seasons. And now the veteran is being linked with the Ducks, due to the connection that he has with Quenneville while in Chicago. Advertisement SportsNet's Elliotte Friedman weighed in on Friday's edition of his '32 Thoughts' podcast and named the Ducks as a potential fit. 'The reports are out now that Jonathan Toews is going to do his comeback next year,' Friedman said. 'I do wonder if Anaheim takes a shot at this. It makes a lot of sense.' Chicago Blackhawks center Jonathan Toews (19) and right wing Patrick Kane (88) talk against the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena. The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Chicago Blackhawks Guillory-Imagn Images Throughout his career, Toews has been great at winning faceoffs, putting up a 57 percent win rate. The Ducks were the worst faceoff team in the NHL last season, putting up a 44.6 percent rate. Toews could potentially help with this, while giving Anaheim a nice addition to the roster. In his last action on the ice, Toews scored 15 goals and 16 assists over 53 games. Advertisement While Toews isn't the same player that he once was, he could be a solid veteran to help show the young team the ropes. Anaheim could be a great place for him to go after his comeback, and he saw massive success under Quenneville in Chicago.
