The transformative impact of emerging technologies, particularly AI, is projected to generate an annual economic value of $11 trillion to $18 trillion, by revolutionising industries such as energy, logistics and manufacturing, according to a new report.
The report, 'Digital Innovation for a Sustainable Future,' released by Invest Qatar, the Investment Promotion Agency of Qatar, and Iberdrola Innovation Middle East, highlights the transformative role of digital technologies in advancing energy efficiency, sustainability and economic diversification.
The report explores key global trends in Artificial Intelligence (AI), smart grids, cloud computing and clean technology, offering insights into their potential to accelerate Qatar's digital transformation.
The rapid expansion of private 5G networks and hyperscale data centres is reinforcing business competitiveness, as 5G technology is projected to contribute almost $900 billion to the global economy by 2030. These advancements are reshaping energy efficiency, as smart grids, Internet of Things (IoT) and AI strengthen the resilience and sustainability of power systems.
Looking ahead, the shift toward clean technology will require a major workforce transformation, with an estimated 200 million skilled workers required globally by 2050 to support the continued expansion of sustainable energy solutions, it said.
Sheikh Ali Alwaleed Al-Thani, CEO of Invest Qatar, said: 'In Qatar, we are embracing digital innovation with a balanced approach, ensuring it aligns with our long-term sustainability goals. By integrating cutting-edge technology with responsible environmental practices, we aim to create opportunities for investors and businesses committed to drive sustainable growth. We believe that digitalisation is not just about enhancing efficiency, but also about shaping a smarter and greener future.'
Santiago Bañales, Managing Director of Iberdrola Innovation Middle East, said: 'This report offers timely insight into how digital innovation, particularly AI, is reshaping the energy landscape and accelerating the shift toward more sustainable systems. AI is driving rapid progress across the sector, from enabling smarter grid operations to optimising the use of renewable energy. Yet it also brings growing energy demands, which must be met with clean, efficient sources. At Iberdrola Innovation Middle East, we are developing AI-based solutions that not only enhance how we generate and manage energy, but also ensure that innovation is sustainable by design. Our ongoing partnership with Invest Qatar reflects a shared commitment to supporting Qatar's transition to a diversified, knowledge-based economy, in line with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.'
Digital innovation and sustainability are at the core of Qatar National Vision 2030 (QNV 2030), focusing on transforming the country into a tech-driven, knowledge-based economy. The Third National Development Strategy (NDS3), launched last year, reinforces the country's ambition to lead in digital innovation and sustainability. This unwavering commitment is reflected in the country's strategic adoption of emerging technologies, significant investment in digital infrastructure and focus on digital skills development. These advancements have propelled the country's rise in global rankings. Qatar ranks second globally for general infrastructure (Global Innovation Index 2024) and leads the GCC in data and infrastructure (AI Readiness Index 2023).
The release of this new report marks the ongoing strategic partnership between Invest Qatar and Iberdrola, building on the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in May 2022.
This agreement enabled Iberdrola to expand its world-class innovation centre dedicated to advancing the application of AI in the energy sector in Qatar and worldwide. Through this partnership, the Spanish group has expanded its Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) activities via the Doha-based Iberdrola Innovation Middle East, located in Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP).

Unveiled at the 5th edition of Qatar Economic Forum, the programme offers a comprehensive suite of incentive packages tailored for both local and international investors. These incentives provide financial support covering up to 40% of eligible local investment expenses over five years, including business setup costs, construction, office leases, equipment and employee-related expenses. Targeting key growth sectors identified in the Third National Development Strategy (NDS3), namely advanced industries, logistics, IT and digital and financial services, the incentive programme will be rolled out in phases. The first phase introduces four off-the-shelf incentive packages designed to support new investments, facilitate the expansion and digitisation of existing facilities, create high-skilled employment opportunities, promote knowledge transfer and foster an innovative, tech-driven ecosystem. The Advanced Industries Package focuses on high-value, technology-intensive sectors such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, automotive and electronics, fostering innovation and value-added production. The Logistics Package is aimed at transforming Qatar into a leading global hub for logistics, re-export and distribution by promoting investments in infrastructure, automation and advanced logistics services. The Technology Package seeks to nurture a dynamic digital economy by attracting investments in cybersecurity, cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven innovation. Meanwhile, the Lusail Financial Services Package is designed to strengthen Qatar's financial ecosystem by advancing asset management, insurance, wealth management and financial technology (fintech) innovation. It also promotes the establishment of offices in the city of Lusail, Qatar's premier financial and business district. The incentives programme is guided by a transparent set of eligibility criteria, including a minimum investment size of QAR25 million over five years, job creation targets and a track record of operation in relevant sectors. These parameters ensure a streamlined and transparent evaluation process, expediting application reviews and approvals. Investors can access more information and apply for the incentive packages through the Invest Qatar Gateway, the country's first digital investor platform, offering a seamless application submission. Sheikh Faisal bin Thani bin Faisal Al Thani, Minister of Commerce and Industry and Chairman of the Advisory Council, said: 'This initiative is a renewed testament to our unwavering commitment to create a world-class investment environment, that not only drives sustainable economic growth but also delivers long-term value to our partners. It reinforces our commitment to support high-potential businesses that share our national vision for innovation, diversification and sustainable growth. By addressing the evolving needs of investors, the incentive packages are tailored to unlock growth across today's most dynamic sectors, while empowering the private sector, contributing to a more resilient, competitive and business-friendly landscape in Qatar.' The incentives programme builds on Qatar's National Incentives Framework, complementing the country's continued efforts to improve its business environment, through strategic policy reforms, new digital services and streamlined licensing procedures across multiple sectors. Riyadh To Launch Self-Driving Taxis Soon

Riyadh will soon be home to self-driving taxis, in a significant transformation in Saudi Arabia's journey toward a smart, AI-enabled transport future, according to a senior government official. Dr. Omaimah Bamasag, deputy of transport enablement at the Transport General Authority (TGA), made the announcement during a panel at the UJ 2025 Artificial Intelligence Conference, held at the University of Jeddah. The session, titled 'Smarter cities, smarter services: How artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things are reshaping the future,' highlighted the Kingdom's ambitious efforts to embed emerging technologies into its public infrastructure. 'This will represent a qualitative step toward a smart and sustainable future in the transportation sector,' Dr. Bamasag said. The rollout in Riyadh is part of a larger vision: five cities across Saudi Arabia have now been designated as 'self-driving friendly,' equipped with the digital and physical infrastructure necessary to support autonomous vehicles including cars, taxis, trucks, and even drones. To coordinate and accelerate these efforts, the TGA has established a Future Mobility Committee, chaired by the Deputy Minister of Transportation and composed of officials from key government entities. The committee is overseeing 120 projects aimed at modernizing transport nationwide, including 16 focused specifically on leveraging artificial intelligence to drive smart mobility. Dr. Bamasag also highlighted key developments in public transit. Electric bus networks have recently launched in Tabuk and Jeddah, bringing the total number of Saudi cities with electric public transport services to 17.
