‘Common sense' to delay Housing Plan until review of National Development Plan complete, housing minister says

Yesterday Taoiseach Micheál Martin confirmed that the housing plan would be delayed beyond July, when it was initially expected, with the possibility it will not be published until September. The housing plan will outline how the Government plans to meet its housing targets. While the review of the NDP, which sets out the Government's investment priorities in infrastructure, will look at all public capital investment projects up to 2035. Mr Browne said the Government were 'not waiting for the housing plan' to bring in measures to tackle the housing crisis and that new decisions were being made every week. 'I think it's just common sense in terms of we won't be able to finalise and publish the housing plan until the National Development Plan is completed. 'Minister Chambers is working very hard with all the various departments but that is obviously a challenging situation. All of us in our different departments have our asks,' Mr Browne said. Meanwhile secondments from different state bodies to the new Housing Activation Office (HAO) are being finalised, Mr Browne confirmed. However, he did not confirm when the head of this new office would be appointed. 'We're finalising now and confirming secondments into it from the various utilities. The secretary is in place, and we're standing it up now and only had a meeting on it yesterday,' Minister Browne said. Mr Browne said while the HAO would be 'on the ground' to help ensure properties are development and land is serviced, the office is only 'one part of a really important jigsaw'. After former NAMA chief Brendan McDonagh withdrew his name from consideration to head up this new office, it is unclear who will take up the position. The minister said while the head of this office was important, it was not essential to housing activation. 'It's a matter of identifying the head, but this is a team that's going to represent myself on the ground. 'I'll be making the strategic decisions, the policy decisions. Their role as a team on the ground is to unlock those sites. The head is important, but it's not an essential piece that housing activation, obviously, it's just one piece in that puzzle,' Mr Browne said.

GoCar reduces services in one county after 'significant damage' caused to cars

An Irish car-sharing company has opted to reduce its services in one county following ongoing 'antisocial behaviour', with 'significant damage' caused to a number of vehicles. GoCar confirmed it would be 'temporarily' reducing the number of vehicles available in Limerick after 'months of persistent incidents' where cars were damaged, placing what the company has called an 'unsustainable strain' on its operations. The car rental company said it was 'genuinely sorry' for the disruption caused to customers and that it is working with Gardaí to restore full service as soon as possible. A GoCar spokesperson told the Irish Mirror: 'At GoCar, we're proud to be a part of the Limerick community since 2017 and truly value the support of our members. We've worked hard to continue providing a reliable service, because we know how important it is to your daily life. 'Unfortunately, months of persistent incidents of antisocial behaviour have caused constant significant damage to our vehicles and placed an unsustainable strain on our operations. 'As a result, we've had to make the very difficult decision to temporarily reduce the number of GoCars available in Limerick. 'We know this will cause disruption to those that use our cars correctly, and for that, we're genuinely sorry. Please rest assured that this is not a decision we've taken lightly. 'We're working closely with local authorities and an Garda Siochana to address the issues and are doing everything we can to restore full service as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding and for being a valued part of the GoCar community.'

Future of iconic high street chain with 281 shops in doubt as it's put for sale

THE future of an iconic high street chain with 281 shops is in doubt as it is put up for sale. Claire's Accessories is exploring a sale of the business as it feels the squeeze of higher US import costs and rising competition in the market. This means a company intends to reorganise its debts and assets while remaining in business. Beloved high street chain with 24 Irish locations confirms Dublin city centre store closing down in 10 days in huge blow Since then, the group has largely been controlled by f ormer creditors including investment firms Elliott Management Corp. Advertisement Julie Palmer, partner at Begbies Traynor said Claire's decision to explore a sale comes as "little surprise". The retail expert said the budget jeweller has been "weighed down" by mounting debt, and Trump's tariffs have only added to its woes. She explained: "Claire's low-price offering is clearly not strong enough to win over its core customers – teens and young adults – as they now have access to a vast array of affordable and convenient products online through platforms like Amazon and Temu. "So, with fewer reasons for its customers to visit their stores, the retailer has struggled to stay relevant". River Island will close 33 stores and a further 70 could shut for good as part of a restructuring plan. Poundland will close 68 stores following its £1 sale to US investmet firm Gordron Brothers. RETAIL PAIN IN 2025 The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury's hike to employer NICs will cost the retail sector £2.3billion. Research by the British Chambers of Commerce shows that more than half of companies plan to raise prices by early April. A survey of more than 4,800 firms found that 55% expect prices to increase in the next three months, up from 39% in a similar poll conducted in the latter half of 2024. Three-quarters of companies cited the cost of employing people as their primary financial pressure. The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year. It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year. Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: "The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025." Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector. "By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer's household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020."
