‘Wicked' singalong and ‘The Salt Path' on Bray's packed summer cinema schedule

Bray People
An afternoon of singing your favourite Wicked songs, while watching the hit new film, and an evening with one of this year's most moving book-to-screen adaptations, The Salt Path, headline the summer cinema schedule in Bray.
With screenings at the Mermaid Arts Centre and some free open-air showings, movie-lovers have plenty to look forward to in the seaside town over the summer months, even when it's raining.
The Wicked singalong is at the Mermaid on Saturday, July 12, with attendees encouraged to dress up as their favourite Wicked characters.
It starts at 3pm.
On Monday, July 14, the true story of Raynor Winn and her husband Moth, who embarked on a transformative 630-mile trek after losing their home and livelihood comes to the Mermaid screen at 8pm.
The Salt Path is adapted from the book of the same name, written by Raynor to help Moth remember the trip they took that changed their lives in unimaginable ways.
Steve Coogan's quirky new comedy The Penguin Lessons (August 4) is another 2025 release on the Bray calendar, as is the gritty feature film debut of British-Indian documentary maker Sandhya Suri, Santosh (August 25), which follows the story of a widowed woman who takes over her late husband's job as a police officer. She quickly becomes involved in a complex rural murder case.
The Bray summer cinema schedule also includes screenings of music documentaries about John and Yoko (July 21) and Led Zeppelin (July 24), and Irish films and documentaries Blue Road The Edna O'Brien Story (June 19), Housewife of the Year (July 22), The Forest Midwife (July 25), Beat The Lotto (July 26), Fidil Ghorm (July 28), Four Mothers (August 11)
Tickets for all Mermaid films are available at mermaidartscentre.ie starting at €8.
However, if it's open-air cinema you are after, screenings are free at the bandstand on Bray's seafront on Thursdays July 3, 17 and August 7. Movie titles will be announced closer to the time of each screening via bray.ie's social channels and all films will begin at 6pm and 8.30pm.
They are of course weather dependent, and movie-goers should bring their own seating, snacks and drinks.

Mum warns of dangers of holiday romance after leaving hubby and kids for toyboy

A woman who left her husband and three children to pursue a relationship with a Masai warrior in Kenya has opened up about her regrets and the emotional toll of that chapter in her life. Now 65 and living quietly in a seaside town in Somerset in the UK, Cheryl Thomasgood has broken her silence more than three decades after her story captured international attention. Her decision to leave her comfortable suburban life on the Isle of Wight for the remote Samburu region of Kenya in 1994 was driven, she now says, by a deep yearning for spiritual healing and escape from personal trauma, reports The Mirror. Cheryl was 34 when she met Daniel Lekimencho, a Masai warrior who performed traditional dances for tourists at the Bamburi Beach Hotel in Mombasa, Kenya. Struck by his charisma and the allure of a vastly different way of life, she ended her marriage to her second husband Mike and left behind their three children to start a new life in Kenya with Daniel, who was ten years her junior. Cheryl immersed herself in Daniel's world - living in a mud hut, cooking over open fires, and adopting elements of Masai culture, including a diet of cabbage and cow's blood. But over time, the stark contrast between their backgrounds and expectations began to strain the relationship. In 1995, the couple returned to the UK, married on Valentine's Day in traditional Masai clothing, and settled on the Isle of Wight with Cheryl's children. They later had a daughter, Mitsi, now 27. But Cheryl says the dream unravelled quickly. Daniel, once deeply spiritual and grounded in Masai tradition, reportedly became increasingly preoccupied with material wealth and status. "I felt like I was just a meal ticket," Cheryl told MailOnline. "I made a huge mistake, and I have a lot of regrets - especially about how it affected my children." Cheryl claims that Daniel began wanting a bigger home, designer gear and cash to send home to Kenyan relatives. They began to argue a lot, and the spiritual connection they once shared faded. Cheryl says the only time Daniel was happy was when the Kenyan warrior was jumping around in the garden doing his traditional Masai dance. She added: "He would say that he was getting ready for battle and wanted to jump as high as an elephant. The kids loved it, but it got on my nerves after a while." Cheryl believes cultural differences and the pressures of assimilating into British life contributed to their eventual split in 1999, just four years after they married and a year after Mitsi's birth. She admits that part of her motivation for staying in the relationship was to prove critics wrong. At the time of their meeting, Cheryl was battling childhood trauma and struggling in an unhappy marriage. Encouraged by a friend from her church choir, she travelled to Kenya in hopes of finding peace. Instead, she says, the relationship served as a temporary escape rather than a solution. She admitted: "The biggest regret of all was the impact on my children. Daniel tried, but he couldn't be the father they needed. They missed out on having a stable male figure." Cheryl is now at peace with her past and has strong relationships with all four of her children - Steve, 43, Tommy, 41, Chloe, 34, and Mitsi, 27. She describes Mitsi as "the one good thing" that came from her time with Daniel. Despite the emotional fallout, Cheryl says she has no desire to marry again. "Three marriages were enough," she said, calling them a "hat-trick of disasters". The mum urged anyone pursuing a holiday romance to "be careful" as you could end up "regretting it for the rest of your life". Daniel, meanwhile, remained in the UK after their separation and now works in a supermarket on the Isle of Wight.

Brad Pitt calls F1 film 'an audacious idea'

Brad Pitt has described his latest project, F1, as "an audacious idea" as the high-octane racing drama made its debut at a packed premiere in New York's Times Square. The film sees Pitt take on the role of a retired driver who returns to the track to help save his friend's struggling Formula One team, while mentoring a young prodigy played by Damson Idris. Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, F1 blends scripted drama with real-life racing, including scenes shot during actual Grand Prix events in Abu Dhabi, Mexico City and more. Pitt and Idris did much of the driving themselves, embedded within the real F1 season. "I can't believe that after all this time, I find something like this. It was just this audacious idea of Joe Kosinski to put us on the track and embed us in the F1 racing season. F1 opened the doors for us and we have this to show for it," said Pitt. British F1 star Lewis Hamilton, who served as a producer on the film, worked closely with the team to ensure it felt authentic. "He said he wants to bring a very authentic side of Formula One," said F1 star Lando Norris of Hamilton. "Give the outside people who don't know so much about Formula One a very generalised overview of what it takes - what it takes personally as an individual and also what it takes as a team, which I think is the most important part of it... and I think he did exactly that." Irish actress Kerry Condon, who also stars in the film, said she was drawn to the subtle depth of her character. "It was great to play somebody who was really intelligent, but wasn't like one-note intelligent. She was kind of shy in her, you know, when it came to things, like romantic things," she said. For Idris, the experience was unforgettable. "These are things that people look back on throughout, hopefully, a long prosperous career," he said. "And they say, 'You know, I remember when I worked with Brad Pitt, I remember I worked with Javier Bardem, Joe Kosinski, Jerry Bruckheimer, Kerry Condon.'" Director Kosinski revealed the scale of the production, noting that over 5,000 hours of had been cut down to just two and a half. "You're going to get the absolute best shots we had, I promise you."
