India's ‘Chenab Trap' Chokes Pakistan's Terror Route; Even China On Edge – Here's How
New Delhi: In a moment that may go down as a masterstroke in India's strategic playbook, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6 unveiled the world's tallest railway bridge – the Chenab Bridge – along with a series of infrastructure marvels in Jammu & Kashmir. While hailed as engineering triumphs, these structures hide within them a fierce geopolitical message – India is silently fortifying its Himalayan frontier, and Pakistan and China are not happy.
At 359 metres tall, taller than the Eiffel Tower, the steel-arched Chenab Bridge is part of the 272 km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway link (USBRL) and connects the Kashmir Valley to the Indian rail grid for the first time. But beyond the awe and applause, it is the military and counter-terror implications that have sent shockwaves across the border.
Why Pakistan, China Should Be Worried
The bridge sits near the treacherous Pir Panjal Range, a mountainous region that has for decades acted as a gateway for Pakistani infiltrators, including ISI-backed terrorists from the Lashkar-e-Toiba and the Jaish-e-Mohammed.
From Poonch and Rajouri to the lush forests near Pahalgam, this route has seen some of the most notorious attacks in India's history.
Now, with the Chenab and Anji bridges completed and the valley more accessible to India's armed forces year-round, this infiltration corridor is on the verge of collapse.
'This is not just a bridge. It's a steel-fisted message to our enemies,' said a top defence expert, requesting anonymity.
The bridge does not only deter Pakistan. It tightens India's grip over the Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh axis, critical to countering Chinese aggression along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Troops, weapons and surveillance units can now move seamlessly – no more seasonal delays or logistical gaps.
Hidden Checkmate
This 'Chenab Chakravyuh' – as called by military strategists – is a geo-strategic snare apart from being about connectivity. With 24/7 surveillance cameras, anti-corrosion technologies and blast-resistant materials, the bridge is built to withstand earthquakes of 8.0 magnitude and even terrorist bombing attempts.
'They tried to divide us by using religion and terror. We are responding with steel, resolve and railways,' said a senior Indian Army official deployed in the region.
Built with inputs from Indian Institute of Technology and the Defence Research, the Development Organisation (DRDO) and global experts, the Chenab Bridge uses high-tensile steel and advanced cable-crane systems.
It is designed to last 120 years even under wind speeds of 260 kmph.
And with two Vande Bharat trains flagged off from Katra to Srinagar, civilian integration of the region is now irreversible.
What rattles Rawalpindi most is that this is blocking terrorists and rendering their long-game obsolete. For years, Pakistan has exploited difficult terrain and porous routes to fuel unrest in the valley. That door just slammed shut.
Even Pakistan Field Marshal Asim Munir must now contend with the fact that Pir Panjal no longer favours infiltration, it favours India.

Assam exploring how to ‘push back foreigners' without involving Foreigners Tribunals, Himanta says
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said that the state government is exploring the possibility of 'pushing back' suspected foreigners into Bangladesh without going through the existing process of identification via Foreigners Tribunals. To support this, he cited a 1950 law, which was issued before the institution of Foreigners Tribunals in the state. He stated that the Supreme Court, while hearing the question of the validity of Clause 6A of the Citizenship Act, had stated that this law is still in force. 'When the Supreme Court had taken up the matter of Clause 6A of the Citizenship Act, that was under a Constitutional Bench. The Bench had mentioned that… that the Assam government does not have to keep approaching the judiciary in the matter of identifying foreigners. There is an old law called the Immigrants Expulsion Order. The Supreme Court has said that this law is still in force. According to this law, the DC has the authority to issue an order for immediate pushback. For whatever reason, this had not been brought to our notice by our lawyers, and we were not aware of it either. In the past few days, this has come to our attention. So we will discuss this,' he told reporters on the sidelines of an event. Last week, Sarma had confirmed that the state is carrying out 'push backs' of people who had been declared foreigners by the state's Foreigners Tribunals by invoking a February 4 Supreme Court order. The top court had pulled up the state for not initiating the process of deporting declared foreigners lodged in the Matia detention centre. Civil groups as well as sections of opposition parties have argued that these 'push backs' violate the procedures of deportation. On Saturday, Sarma said, 'Pushbacks will continue and the process of identifying foreigners, which had been paused because of the NRC (National Register of Citizens), will be sped up again. And this time, if someone is identified as a foreigner, we won't send them to a tribunal; we will just keep pushing them back. Preparations for this are going on.' Foreigners Tribunals are quasi-judicial bodies which determine whether a person presented before them, usually referred by the border police or those listed as 'D-voters' in electoral rolls, is a 'foreigner' or an Indian citizen. Those declared foreigners by these tribunals have the option to appeal against the order by approaching the Gauahti High Court and the Supreme Court.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has sharply criticised Pakistan for its treatment of Dr. Shakil Afridi, the physician who helped the US locate and eliminate Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, responding to a post by US Congressman Brad Sherman who urged a visiting Pakistani delegation to press for Dr. Afridi's release. Several initiatives of the BJP-led NDA government during the last 11 years have boosted the prosperity of farmers and ensured the transformation of agriculture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday, underlined the far-reaching impact of his government's 'pro-farmer' programmes. The Centre also showcased flagship initiatives — such as the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, under which ₹3.68 lakh crore has been transferred to the bank accounts of 110 million farmers, and the Kisan Fasal Bima Yojana, under which ₹1.75 lakh crore has been disbursed to 230 million farmers — as important steps taken for the welfare of farmers. 'It's our privilege to serve our hardworking farmers. For the past 11 years, our various initiatives have boosted prosperity for farmers and also ensured an overall transformation of the agriculture sector,' Modi said in a post on X. 'We have focussed on issues like soil health and irrigation, which have been greatly beneficial. Our efforts towards farmer welfare will continue with greater vigour in the times to come.' The PM further said farmers were earlier forced to take loans for meeting small needs, but their lives have been made easier by his government. The PM over the last few days has been highlighting his government's decisions in specific sectors. The BJP-led NDA government has recently completed its 11 years in power, while the party will mark the first anniversary of Modi-led government's third term on June 9.
