Shane Lowry and Tyrell Hatton learn punishment for foul-mouthed US PGA rants
The second round of the US PGA Championship was a challenge for a number of players and the pressure got the better of a couple of stars as they launched into foul-mouthed outbursts
Tyrrell Hatton and Shane Lowry have both landed themselves in hot water for their behaviour at the US PGA. The pair launched into foul-mouthed explosions during the second round at Quail Hollow, and both are in line for fines.
Hatton and Lowry were among a number of stars to find the going tough on day two. Rory McIlroy only just made the cut on +1, with Hatton two strokes clear of the Northern Irishman, but Lowry found himself the other side of that line.
Ryder Cup star Hatton, 33, began his round on the back nine and ran into difficulties on the 18th. Sky Sports cameras picked up the Brit yelling "'Piece of s***" after a wayward tee shot, after a four-letter Hatton outburst in the opening round had already prompted an apology from the broadcaster.
Lowry was seen flipping a middle finger at the hole during a bogey as part of his round, with the Irishman also heard saying "f*** this place". He went round in par in the second round, but his round one struggles meant he still missed the cut.
Both Hatton and Lowry are expected to receive fines for their behaviour. And, speaking after carding a round of 73, the former shed some more light on a difficult round.
'You tell me, you've seen it," Hatton replied when asked to clarify his language on 18. 'Either way it wasn't my finest moment on the course but I mean yeah, running hot in the moment I'm pretty good at sometimes saying the wrong thing. So yeah, I'll leave it at that.'
He added: 'A great birdie on 17 but a poor tee shot really on 18 and then made some bad decisions. Making seven there was tough and I just unfortunately wasn't able to make other shots coming back on the back nine and it ends up being a frustrating day.'
Hatton had made a strong start, carding a three-under 68 in the opening round to leave him tied for ninth. Matt Fitzpatrick was also in that group and fared far better, repeating the trick to sit in second place at the halfway stage.
Jhonattan Vegas remains out in front, following his opening-round 64 with a 70. He and Mathieu Pavon will form the final group on Saturday, with the Frenchman posting -6 on day two to fire himself into the mix.
"Having been in this position before is a huge advantage," said Fitzpatrick, a former US Open champion. "I feel like there's less pressure. I want to win another major and I'm looking forward to being in contention again."

He has swapped the TaylorMade Qi10 driver, which he used to win the Masters in April, for the brand's newer Qi35 model. McIlroy tried it out at Oakmont last week before giving it its first official test at the RBC Canadian Open at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley, where he hit an opening-round 1-over round of 71. 'It was my first outing with a new driver, and I felt like that went pretty well,' he said after hitting nine of 14 fairways. 'I hit some drives that I liked and that I liked to see, so that was encouraging. 'It's hard with the driver – the one I had been playing with previously, when I missed it, I was a little bit left. Then my miss with this one is a little bit right. It's just trying to figure that out and manage it a little bit. It's a nice feeling to get up the middle of the fairway and fully release it and know it's not going to go left on you.' The Qi35 isn't too different from McIlroy's old Qi10, with the same nine degrees of loft and the same Fujikura Ventus Black shaft. However, it is slightly shorter, which he hopes will give him more control off the tee at the US Open, where he triumphed in 2011. It's not entirely new to him. McIlroy used the Qi35 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier in the season, but the switch comes after his old Qi10 failed a routine test before the US PGA Championship. McIlroy was irritated that the news – which is supposed to stay confidential – was leaked and refused to speak to reporters at the tournament. 'It was supposed to stay confidential,' he said. 'Two members of the media were the ones that leaked it. I didn't want to get up there and say something that I regretted, either, because I'm trying to protect Scottie [Scheffler]. 'I'm trying to protect TaylorMade. I'm trying to protect the USGA, PGA of America, myself. I just didn't want to get up there and say something that I regretted at the time.'

Chris Kamara reveals there is 'no downside to being me' in an encouraging update on his health following recent reports. Kamara, whose charisma earned him plenty of fans during his 24 years with Sky Sports, was diagnosed with the rare neurological condition that affects your ability to speak in 2022. In recent days, prior to working an event with Burton's Fish 'N' Chips in Camden, London, the popular pundit admitted he has been struggling with his balance. However, when speaking to Mail Sport in north London, the 67-year-old claimed that 'it may look worse than it actually is', and his speech has vastly improved. 'I'm always surprised at how lovely people are towards me,' Kamara tells Mail Sport. 'It's amazing, absolutely incredible. It makes me feel humble. There is no downside to being me at the moment, everybody is so nice. 'My speech has improved. I'm an open book, when I am asked a question, I answer honestly. It may look worse than it actually is, and my balance may be worse than it's been, but my voice is better. 'There is no thought process going on that is not transferred to the mouth, it's instant now. So, there is improvement, but downsides in other things, the balance, thyroid, I have a bad back, and might need an operation. 'But there is always somebody worse of than you. Don't feel sorry for me, I am still enjoying life.' The condition forced Kamara to retract from reporting duties with Sky Sports back in 2022, and he found it hard to make appearances in the public eye. However, in 2024, he made his comeback in broadcasting to provide coverage of Nottingham Forest's win over Tottenham for Amazon Prime. Six months later, Kamara could be seen in Camden Market engaging with fans as he served biscuits to celebrate National Fish and Chips Day. This is something that the once Bradford City and Brentford star couldn't fathom doing back in 2022, but now he wants to show that the fun-loving character that took to our screens for decades is still here. 'Two or three years ago, at the height of my condition, I wouldn't have done anything at all – I didn't feel capable of doing anything. My brain was all frazzled, I was feeling sorry for myself. 'That's all gone now. I want to enjoy life and what is remaining of it. Do the things I want, enjoy time with the family, and its great. That attitude has served me well.' With numerous fans coming up to him to share their memories of the charming Kamara, he finds it hard to believe how well-known he is. However, meeting one significant person back in 2022 shocked him, in particular. 'I was so honoured when I got my MBE from Prince William when he said "I have grown up with you" you don't think things like that. 'One of the Royal Family, that is the next King in waiting, has grown up watching you. It's humbling.' While engaging with the general public on Friday, Kamara also served them with the nostalgic 80s favourite snack, Fish 'N' Chips. 'I was out there on the streets, bringing the legendary snack back into the spotlight, and let me tell you, the buzz was electric. 'So many smiling faces, loving the nostalgia and tucking into the tasters, it was the perfect way to celebrate National Fish and Chip Day. Proper magic.'

"We'll need some help before that game for sure, but until we get in here and assess everyone, how many we'll need before the game or how realistic that is because football and the business and transfer window can be difficult. "I'm pretty sure by then we'll have one or two people [in], to help us add to the group."
