Eben Etzebeth: Injury woes a thing of the past

When it comes to injuries, the 2025 season has been one to forget for Eben Etzebeth, who missed a large part of the Sharks' URC and Champions Cup campaigns for a variety of reasons.
Besides an extended absence due to concussion and subsequent symptoms, the big lock strained his hamstring during a Springbok alignment camp in March, and was also ruled out of the Sharks' URC semi-final after a training ground injury.
However, Etzebeth is now back with the Springboks, and he believes the extended rest could actually serve him well as the international season rolls around.
'I've recovered from everything now,' Etzebeth told the media in Johannesburg on Wednesday. 'Obviously, I didn't have the best run – the concussion and injury kept me out for about four, four-and-a-half months, which wasn't ideal. Then I had a minor setback just before the URC semi-final, but I'm fully back in training and very excited for the rest of the season.
'As you get older, it (injuries) does take a bigger toll on your body. Of course, I would've liked to play more this season, but the time off has helped me rest and recover,' he added.
'You don't just sit around – you rehab, work on areas that have been troubling you. You get your whole body strong again. So, while not playing is frustrating, there are positives like getting the body right and spending time with family.'
There is no doubt that the Springbok coaches will be intent on ensuring they manage the game-time and conditioning of Etzebeth to see him through to the 2027 World Cup.
The 33-year-old currently has 131 Test caps to his name, and clearly has no plans of slowing down.
'The day I can't play for the Boks anymore will be a very sad day for me,' he stated.
'There's no better feeling than running out in a full stadium in South Africa – Loftus, Cape Town, wherever – with 50,000 people behind you. It's incredibly special, and it motivates me every time.'

Key Kaizer Chiefs star extends contract

Kaizer Chiefs are trying to build an exciting, youthful squad. However, retaining a handful of experienced heads will be key. Yusuf Maart has skippered the side and is on the brink of a new contract. Mart memorably scored a wonder-goal against Orlando Pirates in 2022. 'Mayele will only come to South Africa for a holiday and Amapiano' 29-year-old Yusuf Maart will stay on at Chiefs and play a vital role in their midfield, according to local reports from @UnplayableZA on X. At the start of 2024-2025, Mdu Shabalala was a critical component in the Chiefs side, operating from the number 10 role. His output was healthy, too. However, that has dwindled dramatically. In 27 league appearances last season, he only got four goals and an assist. Click for the story 30-year-old Edmilson Dove is the latest casualty. South African football has been graced by a remarkable blend of emerging young stars and battle-hardened veterans, each rising to the occasion this past season. Next Stay Close ✕ The Orlando Pirates defender stood as a steadfast pillar in the Buccaneers' backline, playing a crucial role in what became one of their most successful league campaigns, even if the results didn't always reflect their efforts. With regular captain Innocent Maela struggling for minutes, Sibisi frequently rose to the challenge, stepping into a leadership role. This season was one to remember for him – a breakthrough that boosted his confidence significantly, especially considering he had not been a regular fixture in the Pirates set-up before this campaign. His return from the sidelines, after being overlooked early in the season, seemed seamless, as he picked up exactly where he left off last year. Contributing three assists and a goal, Mudau was instrumental in helping his side both score the most goals and concede the fewest in the league, tirelessly patrolling the right flank with unmatched determination. His partnership and leadership at the heart of the defence for the Brazilians have been vital, acting as the glue holding together a backline frequently reshaped throughout the campaign. Kekana has remained unwaveringly solid in breaking down opposition attacks, with his greatest achievement being the remarkable steadiness he has maintained all season long. Since transferring from Stellenbosch FC, he has become a regular presence for the Buccaneers, and with youth still on his side, his quality hints at many more seasons ahead wearing the black and white. His attacking contributions perfectly complement his defensive duties, both of which he has carried out admirably throughout the campaign, making him a strong contender for the award. Joey Chestnut returns to Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest: Is the record in danger?

Competitive eating icon Joey Chestnut is set to make his triumphant return to the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest next month, after missing last year's event due to a sponsorship dispute. Chestnut, a 16-time champion and holder of the world record with 76 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes (set in 2021), announced his comeback on social media this week. 'This event means the world to me,' Chestnut wrote on X. 'It's a cherished tradition, a celebration of American culture, and a huge part of my life.' Chestnut missed the 2024 competition following a disagreement with Major League Eating (MLE) over his endorsement deal with Impossible Foods, a plant-based company. However, he emphasised that his involvement in the plant-based space never conflicted with his love for traditional hot dogs. 'I'm excited to be back on the Coney Island stage, doing what I live to do… Stay hungry!' he added. Major League Eating president Richard Shea confirmed the excitement, calling Joey Chestnut's return a moment that will make the 2025 contest 'the greatest Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest of all time.' Last year's champions were: Patrick Bertoletti , who ate 58 hot dogs to win the men's title , who ate 58 hot dogs to win the men's title Miki Sudo, who claimed her title with 51 hot dogs in the women's division The 2025 contest will take place as usual on Friday, 4 July at Coney Island in New York.
