These dangerous Android apps are installed 2.5 million times each month

Phone Arena09-05-2025

The latest threat to Android phone owners is one that tricks them into installing certain apps that create problems as soon as they are downloaded on their handsets. Dubbed "Kaleidoscope," this is an ad-fraud attack with legitimate apps available in the Google Play Store. There are malicious counterparts to these apps found in third-party app stores, which contribute the fraudulent ads.
IAS Threat Labs has given this attack the Kaleidoscope name because it is always changing to avoid detection. According to the data, 2.5 million new devices are compromised each month, with 20% of these found in India. Other areas where Kaleidoscope has been discovered include Indonesia, the Philippines, and Brazil. Driving the expansion of this threat are the installation of malicious apps via third-party app store fronts.

Kaleidoscope works like this. An Android user installs an app from the Play Store that looks and even runs like a legitimate app. A malicious duplicate of the app is listed in a third-party app store; messages and social media direct users to install the malicious version of these apps via the third-party app stores and direct installs. The Android device owner thinks that he has installed a legitimate app, and advertisers believe that their ads are being viewed on legit apps.

Instead, once the malicious version of the app is installed on a phone, it shows intrusive ads, including full-screen images and videos that do not require any interaction from the user to run. You can see how annoying this could be to the unlucky device owners who end up with a phone that is making big bucks for cyber-criminals and prevents users from viewing their displays. Flagged titles have been removed from the Play Store by Google, and the latter adds that it will protect Android users from known versions of Kaleidoscope. The ad resellers involved in this scheme are said not to be very diligent in vetting the quality of the ad inventory they are delivering to advertisers. Usually, this type of malicious adware will cause a phone to overheat, drain the batteries quickly, and lead the device to run slowly with laggy performance.
An incredible 2.5 million new installs of Kaleidoscope-infected apps take place each month making this a very serious and dangerous situation for Android users.

Well, an official Samsung teaser seemed to suggest as much, slipping the capitalized Ultra buzzword in a few places, but tipster Max Jambor suggested that there is no Ultra, just the Galaxy Z Fold7, which will supposedly be Ultra-quality. Ultra or just Fold7, we expect Samsung to bring out its next foldabls as early as July. While we can't share all the details yet, we can show off the exterior and talk about some of the features of this upcoming device. The Nothing Phone (3) will come in black and white, and will start at $799 with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It will go up to $899 with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. We'll just have to wait and see. The phone is coming in July, the headphones later. The Honor 400 Pro is a solid upgrade over its predecessor, despite the similar battery size. It's a week later than previously rumored, allegedly. It's the same as last year. Huawei revealed the design of the upcoming Pura 80 Pro+, and it looks very much like its predecessor. The Pura 80 series is coming on June 11. It's less than a month away. It's powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC. Huawei has also opened up Pura 80 Pro and 80 Pro+ pre-reservations in China.

WhatsApp's auto-download quality feature is now available for beta users on Android

WhatsApp has been testing a feature since April that would allow users to select the quality of photos and videos automatically downloaded on their devices. This feature is now available to some Android users enrolled in the beta program. According to WABetaInfo, this auto-download quality feature is available to some users having beta version 2.25.18.11 of WhatsApp for Android, and the rollout is expected to expand to more beta users over the coming weeks. If you are a beta user and have received this feature, you'll find it under WhatsApp's Settings > Storage and data menu below the "Media upload quality" option. It's listed as "Auto-download quality" and offers two download choices - Standard quality and HD quality. If you select "Standard quality," WhatsApp will automatically download a compressed version of the media. If you choose "HD quality," the app will download the high-resolution media version to your device. However, if you choose the standard quality for auto-download, you will still have the option to view the media in HD manually within the chat later, provided that version is still on WhatsApp's servers. Speaking of, WABetaInfo reports that WhatsApp has introduced a new system with a dual-upload process when sending high-quality photos and videos. It means that when users send an image or video in HD quality, their devices will automatically generate standard and HD versions of that media for upload. This dual-upload is required, because due to end-to-end encryption, WhatsApp cannot process the file to compress it on its servers; hence, both the standard and HD versions are uploaded from the sender's side on WhatsApp's servers. If the receiver has selected standard quality for auto-download, then the compressed version will be downloaded and decrypted on their device. Source

Search Live rolling out to iOS, Android as users get to tell their phones exactly what they need

Previewed during Google I/O last month, Search Live is now being tested by Google for both Android and iOS. You might recall at I/O Google played a video showing someone looking to repair his Huffy Mountain Bike. While engaged in a conversation with Search, the bike owner had Search look for a User's Manual for the bike, asking Search to focus on the section dealing with the bicycle's brakes. He also asked Search to find a YouTube video showing how to fix a stripped screw. After that, the bike owner gave Search Live the task to go through his emails with the bike shop to find out the size of the hex nuts he needed. The bottom line is that this is AI at its best. Sure, AI can convert your resume to make it look as though it was written by Shakespeare. It can be used to create an emoji. But more importantly, with the right platform, AI can help you get things done. Think of this as a way to have a conversation with Google. With Google rolling this out right now, you'll know if you have the feature by finding a waveform "carrying a small sparkle" on the right underneath the Google Search bar. Tapping that will start a conversation using Search Live. Another way to start a conversation with this platform is to use the circular button to the right of the pill-shaped Search text field in AI Mode conversations. The red circles show the buttons that you tap to start a conversation with Gemini Search on iOS and Android. | Image credit-PhoneArena When talking to Search Live, the UI will be a dark screen or a light screen. Two buttons on the bottom show the microphone icon and a written document icon. They are titled "Unmute" and "Transcript." Google says that this feature will allow you to "have a real-time voice conversation with AI Mode to find exactly what you're looking for." You tap mute to turn off the microphones. Interestingly, Google points out that AI can hallucinate by warning that Live for AI Mode is experimental and can make mistakes. If you want to, if you're in the middle of a conversation, you can exit the Google app and continue the conversation in the background.
