Kemp joins Florida, South Carolina request to directly manage fish populations instead of feds
Gov. Brian Kemp joined a request from Florida and South Carolina governors Ron DeSantis and Henry McMaster to move management of fish populations to the state. Specifically, the three governors sent a letter to U.S. Commerce Sec. Howard Lutnick requesting that the states handle management of red snapper and other reef fish populations found in the Atlantic Ocean. 'Our fishing industry has suffered under heavy handed federal regulations imposed by bureaucrats thousands of miles away. It's time this industry is managed much closer to home!' While the states are 'committed to helping our recreational fishing communities,' the governors said they are also working to conserve fisheries as resources for future generations. 'The first step to correcting course on federal mismanagement is to stop the harmful impacts of Amendment 59 to the Fishery Management Plan for the Snapper-Grouper Fishery of the South Atlantic Region,' the three officials said in their letter. The letter lays the blame on 'decades of inaction by career bureaucrats within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration,' as well as actions taken at the end of the Biden Administration, which 'cut-off public access to the fishery' and have made it harder for communities to 'exercise their God-given right to fish and support their local economies and way of life.' Kemp and his fellow governors said the red snapper population is no longer being over-fished and as a result, they would like a large increase to the quota allowance for fishing the species, due to their current level of 'unprecedented abundance.' Atlanta rent prices down 1% compared to 2024, but rose month-to-month
The median rent prices across the United States are starting to trend lower, and the same is true for Atlanta. While the dollar amounts differ, Atlanta and the United States writ large both had year-over-year rental price decreases of 1%. Similarly, both the country overall and the city saw rent prices creep upward by 0.5% in May, according to real estate firm Redfin. According to Redfin's latest report, the median rent in Atlanta is $1,549, lower than the U.S. average of $1,633. Redfin reported that, nationally, 'the rental vacancy rate for buildings with five or more units was 8.2% in the first quarter" of 2025. The company said rent prices are also less volatile than during the COVID-19 pandemic. 'Apartment construction in America has been hovering near a 50-year high, and even though renter demand is strong, it's not keeping pace with supply,' Redfin Senior Economist Sheharyar Bokhari said. City of South Fulton leaders hold emergency meeting about Job Corps pause
City of South Fulton leaders said they are already feeling the impacts of the impending Job Corps closures. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Leaders said construction on the new Metro Atlanta Job Corps center stopped years ago and now the community is dealing with land left abandoned. 'We need to hold people accountable,' said councilmember Helen Willis at a press briefing Wednesday. Willis said the structure at Roosevelt Highway and Washington Road was supposed to be the site of the new Metro Atlanta Job Corps center. She said she now fears blight and other issues with the abandoned property, owned by the federal government. Willis told Channel 2's Audrey Washington that while the top priority is finishing the campus for students, if the government does not, she wants the property back in the hands of the city. Citing financial issues, last week, the Department of Labor announced a phased pause at contractor-led Job Corps centers nationwide. Right now, students and staff have just days to leave the facilities. 'Kids, they're really not going to have anywhere to go, they're going to be on the streets,' Weaver explained. 'What's going to happen to thousands of youths?' Willis asked.
