Fort Benning officially renamed in ceremony on Wednesday morning
The Brief
Fort Benning was renamed Wednesday in honor of U.S. Army Corporal Fred G. Benning, a World War I hero awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
The post was previously named after Confederate General Henry L. Benning and briefly renamed Fort Moore in 2023 to honor Lt. Gen. Hal Moore and his wife.
The 10 a.m. ceremony will include a colors casing and uncasing and the unveiling of a memorial plaque at the base, which trains infantry, tank crews, and Army Rangers.
A renaming ceremony took place Wednesday morning at Fort Benning to officially restore the post's name—this time in honor of a different Benning.

Originally named after Confederate General Henry L. Benning, the base was renamed Fort Moore in 2023 to honor Lt. Gen. Hal Moore and his wife, Julia. Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, named after Confederate General A.P. Hill, was renamed Fort Walker in August 2023, honoring Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, a Civil War-era surgeon and the only female Medal of Honor recipient.

With hundreds of schools across Michigan, some school leaders saw an opportunity for creativity. So we've compiled some of the most unique school nicknames across the state. A spoiler: Many Michigan high schools get their athletic nicknames from wartime or, in a uniquely Michigan fashion, from automotive themes. The high school adopted the gremlins name in 1948, changing from their previous mascot, the Orange, according to the Keweenaw Community Foundation. The name was suggested by a principal who had served as a pilot in World War I, interested in stories about "gremlins" harassing pilots in World War II. Pilots in the war jokingly blamed problems in the air on mischievous gremlins. A dreadnought (spelled differently than the mascot, for a reason that is not apparent) is a type of battleship, according to Brittanica. Dexter's school nickname, like Houghton's, likely comes from wartime, too, according to Dexter's The Sun Times News, following the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Doughboy was once a nickname for Gen. Ishpeming is a mining town, which is where the nickname for the school came from, according to Sports Illustrated coverage of its 2012 high school football season. The high school's name came from Henry Ford, who developed the Fordson tractor for farmers. The tractor became Fordson's mascot, one of the most unique in the state. "Lemonade and Leashes" raises money for hundreds of animals at Garland Animal Shelter
An 8-year-old animal welfare advocate served up refreshing lemonade on Sunday to raise awareness and help dogs at the Garland Animal Shelter. "Today I'm doing my one-year anniversary lemonade stand to help animals at the shelter," 8-year-old Ben Fuentes said, as he served up sweet treats to help four-legged friends in need. Deana Seigler is the president of Friends of Rescue Animals, a non-profit organization that operates the volunteer program at the Garland Animal Shelter and Adoption Center. "We are doing 'Lemonade and Leashes' at the Garland Animal Shelter to raise awareness with the community about the dogs here at the shelter," Seigler said. The help needed for man's best friend is critical. Alberto Maldonado, the shelter's community outreach coordinator, said they're taking in increasing numbers of animals. "We do about 150 intakes per week, so them being able to take up some of that vital shelter space helps us by so, so much. We're able to go ahead and bring in more animals and help out more," Maldonado said. The event promoted the importance of fostering at the event. "Foster homes give a dog a break from the crazy, noisy shelter," Seigler said. "It allows them time to decompress, where we can learn what their true personality is like in a home." The adoptable dogs put their best paw forward going on walks with potential fur parents at the fundraiser. "We have dogs from 6 pounds to 120 pounds. We have purebreds," Maldonado said. Celebrate National Doughnut Day in Cleveland
Free doughnuts are on the menu Friday for National Doughnut Day — aka National Donut Day in some circles. The big picture: National chains, including 7-Eleven, Krispy Kreme, Dunkin' and Sheetz, are celebrating June 6 with savings on your sugar fix. Flashback: The fake holiday was established in Chicago as a Salvation Army fundraiser in 1938. It honored the Donut Lassies who served the circular treats to soldiers during World War I. 💭 Sam's thought bubble: My west side ZIP code is prime real estate for local doughnut lovers, with Brewnuts and Goldie's both less than a mile away. Between the sprinkles: Brewnuts' daily offerings are so enormous and decadent that I pretty much reserve them for special occasions or photo ops. For Friday's festivities, they've got limited edition swag and are offering free mini doughnuts to the first 100 customers. Goldie's has grown on me since opening in 2023, with rock-solid basics and just enough variety to avoid redundancies in a dozen box.
