The International District Energy Association Announces Speakers and Program for IDEA2025

Business Wire08-05-2025

BOSTON & MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The International District Energy Association (IDEA) will be holding its 116 th annual conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota from Monday, June 2 to Thursday, June 5, 2025. Minnesota is an epicenter of district energy growth and has seen significant investment in district energy in recent years, including in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Duluth and Rochester.
The annual conference, which first opened in 1909, generally attracts attendees from more than 400 cities and nearly 30 countries from around the world. This year, the conference is organized under the theme 'Aggregate, Integrate, Innovate' - three of the main pillars and driving forces behind district energy.
'Aggregation, integration and innovation are a combination of qualities that are unique to district energy,' said Rob Thornton, President & CEO, IDEA. 'Together, these three capabilities enable the technology's ability to deliver resilient, efficient, reliable and sustainable energy solutions for cities and communities worldwide. We are excited to welcome this year's event speakers, guests and attendees to Minneapolis, where our programming will touch on these three core values that are directly impacting the exciting pace and momentum behind district energy here in North America and around the globe.'
IDEA is proud to welcome this year's keynote speaker, Joseph Majkut, to the conference on Tuesday, June 3. An expert in climate science and climate policy, Majkut is Director of the Energy Security and Climate Change Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). At a moment when the energy industry is experiencing seismic federal policy shifts, coupled with regional inflections for natural gas and projections of historic growth in demand for power, Majkut will share an informed perspective on the global energy transition and where the district energy industry fits as resilient city-scale infrastructure in a future of more extreme weather events.
Attendees will enjoy a rich agenda at IDEA2025 with over 85 sessions and up to five topic track options at a time during the main program. IDEA will also offer two preconference workshops, providing in-depth exploration of District Energy & Data Centers and District Thermal Energy Networks. Each led by industry-respected experts, these workshops will deliver valuable insights and practical takeaways on these rapidly emerging topics. Attendees will leave with invaluable relationships and connections to a collegial network of colleagues facing similar policy, business and regulatory challenges for answers beyond the conference. Additional programming and talk tracks will cover decarbonizing district energy systems, integrating renewables, sector coupling, thermal energy networks, electrification, governance strategies, geo-exchange, nuclear energy, system optimization, heating, cooling, compliance, and much, much more.
Program highlights include:
Monday, June 2
Two workshop opportunities: District Energy & Data Centers and District Thermal Energy Networks (8:00am-3:00pm)
District Energy & Data Centers participants will learn directly from data center developers and district energy providers about market opportunities for the co-location and integration of data centers with district energy systems while exploring technical, business and regulatory considerations.
District Thermal Energy Networks attendees will explore technology options, business model guidance and discuss new tools to accelerate business development and shape policy evolution with federal, state, and local policy leaders.

70% of U.S. Workers Want Robots To Help

Survey of 1,000 employees in the US MUNICH, June 11, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--US workers welcome robot technology in the workplace: About 70% think that robots help manufacturers to deal with the lack of factory workers ensuring competitiveness. Two-thirds believe the use of robots will help to bring industrial production back home. These are findings of the automatica Trend Index 2025. The study surveyed 1,000 employees in the US on behalf of automatica, the world´s leading trade fair for robotics and automation (24-27 June in Munich, Germany). The US government is actively working to bring industrial production back to the United States. As the world's most advanced manufacturing countries have shown, robots are the key to integrating automation into a factory: China has more than doubled the ratio of robots to factory workers in four years (2018-2022), and now ranks third in the world. Robot density in China reached 470 robots per 10,000 workers in 2023, compared to 295 units in the United States, which ranks tenth, according to the International Federation of Robotics. 2.1 million unfilled jobs The push for automation technology is strongly driven by labor shortages. The Manufacturing Institute (MI) predicts that nearly 2.1 million manufacturing jobs will go unfilled by 2030 due to a lack of skilled workers. The automatica trend index shows that US workers welcome robots to take over dirty, dull and dangerous tasks: A strong majority of 75% believe that robots reduce the risk of injury to humans by performing tasks such as heavy lifting. 73% see robots as an important solution for handling hazardous materials. 65% say robots will assist workers, allowing older people to stay in work longer. "Showing how robots can take over repetitive or dangerous tasks, while allowing workers to focus on higher-value jobs, is important for the successful integration of robotics into a factory workforce," says Patrick Schwarzkopf, advisory board member of automatica at Messe München in Germany. "Driven by a number of technological innovations such as artificial intelligence, easy-to-use programming or cost-saving efficiency, industrial robotics is becoming more accessible to companies than ever before. This will be demonstrated at the world's leading trade fair for intelligent automation and robotics 'automatica 2025' from June 24 to 27 in Munich, Germany. Walker & Dunlop's Built-For-Rent Report Highlights Accelerated Growth

BETHESDA, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Walker & Dunlop, Inc. released its 2025 Built-For-Rent (BFR) report, that offers comprehensive market trends and analysis on the rapid expansion of this housing sector. As a leader in this space, Walker & Dunlop has facilitated over $3.4 billion in BFR financing and investment sales, providing expert guidance to developers and investors navigating this dynamic asset class. 'BFR has emerged as a fast-growing and highly strategic segment within multifamily real estate,' said Walker Harris, senior vice president and co-head of Multifamily at Walker & Dunlop. 'Fueled by evolving renter preferences, constrained for-sale inventory, and widening affordability challenges in homeownership, BFR presents renters with a unique option: purpose-built single-family homes combined with the flexibility of renting.' The report explores the current BFR market, the advantages and challenges of BFR investment, and the ways in which Walker & Dunlop facilitates strategic investment in the BFR space. Why BFR Demand Is Accelerating: A Shifting Renter Profile: Renters choose BFR for lifestyle and flexibility, enjoying home-like features without mortgage commitments. Supply-Demand Imbalance: Rental housing demand exceeds supply as population growth outpaces new single-family home construction. Affordability Gap Widens: Rising homeownership costs make buying less affordable, increasing interest in BFR communities. Rent vs. Own: A Compelling Cost Comparison: BFR renting often costs significantly less than owning a comparable home, offering notable savings. For owners and investors, BFR offers institutional-grade stability by combining single-family home appeal with multifamily management, leading to stable cash flow and higher occupancy rates around 96%. Its diverse product types—detached homes, townhomes, and horizontal apartments—allow tailored investment strategies, with single-family detached homes often commanding the highest prices for closely mimicking traditional homeownership. 'At Walker & Dunlop, we provide comprehensive capital solutions tailored to every stage of the Built-For-Rent lifecycle, from development and acquisition to investment,' said Keaton Merrell, managing director of Capital Markets at Walker & Dunlop. 'As the #1 Fannie Mae DUS® lender in 2024, we offer clients access to scalable, attractive financing alongside a broad range of debt and equity options. Our deep market expertise and expansive network enable us to deliver customized advisory services that help clients mitigate risk and accelerate execution. We are proud to be a trusted partner driving growth and stability in this dynamic sector.'
