Work underway to fix "nightmare" Dunstable speed bumps
Speed bumps on a road are being replaced after residents complained they were too high.The bumps, which were erected on First Avenue, in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, in November, did not meet Highways (Road Humps) Regulations 1999.Resident Gerry Salmon described them as a "nightmare" and said "you scrape your car no matter how slow you go" as they were "way too high".Councillor John Baker, executive member for finance and highways, at Central Bedfordshire Council said: "We are aware of the recent concerns regarding the installation of traffic calming humps on First Avenue in Dunstable and, following a subsequent review, it was identified that remedial works are needed."
Ms Salmon said the humps "have been ridiculous" and it was "like climbing a mountain every time you go over them".Another resident, Rita Eggleton, said they were "quite high but people just go too fast down here".She said that "obviously it is more money" to fix them "when potholes need doing".Tessa Webb said she lived right by one of the speed bumps and you could "hear the scraping and the banging as some people try and go over too fast".She said "you could only go over them at about 5mph" and "it is dreadful".
Cllr John Baker said the remedial works were scheduled to continue until 12 March.

"This showroom with offices and workshop is to be sold vacant and ready for a new operator, or there is potential to change the current use subject to planning. "The premises has been used successfully for used cars sales and repairs by the current owners for over 40 years but is now being sold due to retirement. "The premises comprise of a generous showroom, workshop, two offices, presentation suite, kitchen and cloakroom. "There is a large forecourt for upwards of 30 cars and the premises has three phase electricity and security alarm system." According to Business Rescue Expert there are multiple reasons why car dealerships are folding across the UK. The first major factor is rising online car sales which are beating in-person sales at dealerships. With an extensive range of comparison and second-hand sites to chose from, may car buyers don't even step foot into a dealership anymore. Secondly, the actual cost to physically run the sites has soared. Rent, wages and energy bills have all been increasing for roughly the past five years, putting many out of pocket. Car manufacturing across the globe was also hit by a semiconductor chip shortage in 2022 which made it difficult to produce new motors. The high demand with limited supply created a backlog, which although has eased, is still having an impact on the industry. A third reason for recent closures is the shift to electric cars. They are becoming more popular, given the Government initiative to be Net Zero in 2050. The industry is also affected when companies merge or are bought by rivals. This may lead to some independent names falling victim to the ongoing spate of closures.

The incident happened on the A40 in Raglan, Monmouthshire on Saturday, May 31, shortly before 11am. A 27-year-old man from the Kent area died from his injuries at the scene, Gwent Police confirmed in a statement on Monday. A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: 'Gwent Police is appealing for information following a fatal road traffic collision on the A40 at Raglan, on Saturday, May 31, at about 10.55am." They added: 'It happened on the southbound off slip, travelling onto the A449, and involved one motorcycle, a black Ducati Multistrada. 'The rider, a 27-year-old man from the Kent area, was pronounced dead at the scene. His family is being supported by specially trained officers. 'Anyone with any information, dashcam, or CCTV footage is asked to call 101, quoting 2500171600, you can send a direct message on Facebook or X, or contact us online." Article continues below The A40 in Raglan includes a central area in the road which cars have to use to cross the carriageway and which many locals have said is dangerous, although the circumstances around the latest incident on the stretch are not yet known. It follows a collision having also occurred on the A40 on Saturday, May 24. Raglan community council reported on that occasion multiple people were taken to hospital.
