was officially named to the NHL's Quarter-Century Team. It comes just 48 hours after fellow
Calgary Flames
legend Jarome Iginla was recognized by the Hall of Fame. Johnny Gaudreau is one of some of the NHL's finest players since 2010 Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, Auston Matthews, Leon Draisaitl, and Connor McDavid in this exclusive grouping, chosen by fans from February to April.

Only 5'9" and 157 pounds, he was looked down upon by many before the Calgary Flames took a chance on him in the fourth round of the 2011 NHL Draft. Now he is an NHLer and the name Johnny Gaudreau is a brand that shall never be overlooked again. Johnny Gaudreau with his lightning hands, incisive passes, and never-say-die skating was among the most thrilling players to watch.

He appeared in 763 regular-season games with 243 goals and 500 assists. The He was also an excellent sportsman, winning the Lady Byng Trophy in 2016–17. Everyone in North America enjoyed watching him, not only because of his talent but also because he demonstrated that heart is more important than size in the NHL.
Johnny Gaudreau's life was cut short too soon
After eight wonderful seasons as a member of the Calgary Flames, Johnny Gaudreau signed a contract with the
Columbus Blue Jackets
in 2022. There, he also continued to charm, scoring 33 goals and earning 134 points in just 161 matches. Alas, the heartbreak came too soon. Johnny Gaudreau and his younger brother Matthew both died on August 29, 2024, sadly in an accident.
It was a sad loss to the players, fans, and the entire hockey world. The Flames and Blue Jackets remembered the Gaudreau brothers and didn't remember just what Johnny accomplished on the ice, but who he was off of it good, kind, and popular with everyone.
His final honor, making the Quarter-Century Team, is a fitting recognition for one of the sport's brightest stars. Though his on-field career was brief, the smiles he provided to fans everywhere will always be remembered.

India will begin a new era in Test cricket on June 20 when the side takes on England in the first Test of the five-match series at Headingley. Shubman Gill will lead the side that will be without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, with both retiring from the format last month. While Gill's captaincy justifiably be in focus, another major point of discussion is Kohli's replacement at the no.4 spot. Kohli took the position from the great Sachin Tendulkar when he called time on his career in 2013, and held the role successfully for the next 12 years. According to former Australia captain and multiple World Cup-winner Ricky Ponting, Gill should succeed Kohli in the role. Ponting believes that taking over the no.4 role will make it easier for Gill to lead the Indian team as well. Interestingly, Ponting doesn't want KL Rahul to open the innings. "I think (Sai) Sudarshan and (Yashasvi) Jaiswal will open the batting (in England) as Sudarshan just looks like a class player to me and technically I think he could do well at Test level," Ponting told The ICC Review. "They'll have two pretty young opening batters, so they might look to go for someone that's got a bit more experience at No.3. 'Whether that's KL (Rahul) or Karun (Nair) at No.3, and then Shubman might end up being that No.4 player, which will probably make life for him a little bit easier as a captain as well.' Ponting believes that opening the batting or playing at no.3 – which had been Gill's designated role in Tests so far – will put pressure on the youngster. 'Not having to be opening or batting at No.3 as a young captain might make it easier. Their top five will probably be Sudarshan, Jaiswal, KL, Gill and Karun Nair for the start of the England series,' said the Aussie great. KL Rahul, meanwhile, smashed a century for India A while opening the batting during the second warm-up match against England Lions on Friday. Rahul scored 116 after India A batted first, with Dhruv Jurel also scoring a half-century.
