Shah Alam workshop sees 53 educators benefitting from public-private partnership
A TOTAL of 53 teachers attended the Advancing Future Skills for All (FS4A) Selangor Scale Up digital training initiative.
The one-day workshop was also attended by district Education Department officers and school principals.
Armed with the skills, the educators will, in turn, train 40 teachers and 80 students in 40 schools from this July to August.
Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, who launched the initiative, said the workshop reflected aims for a more inclusive and progressive state.
'Our state is keen to future-proof its next generation, by equipping students with essential digital skills needed to keep pace with rapid global development.
'FS4A aligns with the aspirations planned out in the 'Rancangan Struktur Negeri Selangor 2035' (Selangor Structure Plan) that covers the state's strategic direction,' he said in his opening speech at the event held at Arena@CelcomDigi in Subang Hi-Tech Industrial Park, Shah Alam.
The FS4A programme is a collaboration between Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Google, Unicef Malaysia, CelcomDigi and Arus Academy, with support from Education Ministry.
Amirudin said this programme was a brilliant example of what a public-private partnership could achieve.
'We have Google and CelcomDigi committed to our communities, and to ensuring every Malaysian child gets vital digital skills.
'Then, we have MDEC, Unicef and the Education Ministry, all sharing a powerful vision of empowering our children for the jobs of tomorrow.
'We also have Arus, an experienced education enterprise,' he said, expressing certainty that the project would propel youths into a better future.
'The public sector alone cannot do all the work to raise our children to be future ready. It is the work and responsibility of us all, and that includes the teachers, the corporates and of course, civil society,' he added.
Amirudin stressed that the goal was for Selangor to set the benchmark for digital learning.
He said the FS4A was aimed at cultivating a spirit of lifelong learning and self-reliance in youths.
'It is our responsibility to ensure every student is prepared for the challenges and opportunities that will shape their lives, and communities,' he added.
SK Telok Gong evening senior assistant Georgia Helen Daniel Siken said FS4A would enhance digital literacy skills among students and teachers.
SMK Bandar Baru Sungai Buloh Technical and Vocational Department head Norfazilah Othman said equipping students with digital literacy was crucial.
CelcomDigi chief executive Datuk Idham Nawawi said, 'By empowering educators and students with vital digital skills, and ensuring equitable access to technology and opportunities, through strong partnerships, we will continue to drive digital inclusion across the nation, building a vibrant digital ecosystem empowering every Malaysian.'
Also present were Arus Academy co-founder David Chak, Razif Abdul Aziz from MDEC, Google public affairs manager Aarti Ahuja, Selangor Mentri Besar Incorporated group chief executive officer Datuk Saipolyazan Mat Yusop, Education Ministry Education Policy Planning and Research Division deputy director Dr Wan Raisuha Wan Ali, Unicef Malaysia deputy representative Sanja Saranovic and Selangor Education Department senior assistant director Mohammad Nuri Hussin.

Google offers to tweak search results to promote rivals, stave off EU antitrust fine, documents show

REUTERS/Arnd Wiegmann/File Photo BRUSSELS (Reuters) -Alphabet's Google has proposed more changes to its search results to better showcase rivals in a bid to stave off a possible hefty EU antitrust fine, according to documents seen by Reuters. Google's latest proposal came three months after the European Commission charged the U.S. tech giant with favouring its own services such as Google Shopping, Google Hotels and Google Flights over rivals in breach of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The landmark DMA sets out a list of dos and don'ts for Big Tech aimed at reining in their power and giving rivals more room to compete and consumers more choices. Under Google's new proposal a vertical search service (VSS) selected on objective and non-discriminatory criteria would get its own box at the top of the search page with the same format, information and features as Google's, the document said. The box would contain three direct links picked by the VSS, to hotels, airlines, restaurants and transport. Other VSS, which are specialised search engines within Google, would be ranked below but without a box unless users click on them. "We do not agree with the (Commission's) preliminary findings' position but, on a without prejudice basis, we want to find a workable solution to resolve the present proceedings," the documents sent by both Google and the Commission to the rivals said. The rivals will provide feedback at a July 8 meeting called by the Commission. A number of rivals, who did not want to be named ahead of the meeting, told Reuters that the changes still do not go far enough to ensure a level playing field. Turkish competition authority launches probe into Google's PMAX

ISTANBUL (Reuters) -Turkey's antitrust authority will launch a probe into Google's Performance Max (PMAX) to determine if the AI-powered ad campaign product violates competition laws, it said on Friday. In a statement, the competition board said the probe will examine whether Google has engaged in unfair practices against advertisers and if it has hindered competition through data consolidation with PMAX. Google's Performance Max uses AI and automatically finds the best placements for a brand's ads across Google services including email, search and YouTube. UMS recognised as premier digital tech institution

Wilson (seated, centre) with invited guests and attendees during the CSR @ UMS 2025 Programme held at the university today. KOTA KINABALU (June 20): Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), hosted the CSR @ UMS 2025 Programme, a corporate social responsibility initiative aimed at advancing digital talent and digital literacy across the campus community. The event, held today, was officiated by Deputy Minister of Digital, Datuk Wilson Ugak Anak Kumbong, who also presented the Premier Digital Tech Institution (PDTI) plaque to UMS's Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FKI), formally recognising it as a strategic driver in the nation's digital ecosystem. 'Today marks the formal recognition of the Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FKI), UMS, as one of Malaysia's premier digital tech institutions. 'This accolade is more than a symbol of academic excellence. It comes with a weighty responsibility. FKI is now the only PDTI-recognised institution in Sabah, positioning UMS as a key talent development hub for East Malaysia,' Wilson said. He further emphasised that the PDTI status enables strategic access to industry collaboration, knowledge transfer, lecturer training and hands-on student exposure to emerging technologies and critical industry-relevant digital skills. Wilson noted that UMS's recognition adds to the success of the national PDTI ecosystem spearheaded by MDEC since 2017. The initiative, developed in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) and various technology industry partners, is one of the country's flagship programmes to bolster digital talent. To date, 46 faculties from 28 higher education institutions nationwide including 11 public universities, 10 private universities and seven polytechnics have been conferred PDTI status. Under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK-12), MDEC's talent development programmes have benefitted nearly 400,000 students through various initiatives such as hackathons, digital literacy workshops, industry talks, bootcamps, seminars and professional certification schemes. For 2025 alone, MDEC is tasked with equipping 150,000 students across all levels with digital and entrepreneurial skills, with PDTI institutions playing a critical role in achieving this nationwide target. As part of the UMS programme, a digital literacy workshop was also held, aimed at introducing fundamental technology awareness, enhancing digital capabilities among students and staff and promoting responsible, inclusive use of digital tools. 'Programmes like this demonstrate the immense potential when government, industry and academia work together. 'Together, we can nurture a digitally literate society, one that not only adopts technology, but uses it ethically and strategically,' Wilson added. Among those present were UMS Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Kasim Mansor and Dean of the Faculty of Computing and Informatics, Associate Professor Ts Dr Mohd Hanafi Ahmad Hijazi. In his remarks, Kasim described the PDTI recognition as a historic milestone for UMS, symbolising not just academic and research excellence in digital technology, but also UMS's emerging role as a regional leader in digital talent development, in line with its aspiration of being the brain of Borneo.
