Not even knee surgery can keep Morgan Reczkiewicz from leading the way for Oak Forest. ‘She lives for the game.'
For a kid who can't play this season due to a knee injury, junior third baseman/catcher Morgan Reczkiewicz sure is making her presence felt for Oak Forest.
During preseason practice and in the early games, Reczkiewicz has taken on the role of being another coach on the field and in the dugout. And she isn't afraid to get loud when doing so.
Isn't that right, senior first baseman MacKenzie Kerr?
'Oh, yes, Morgan is good at that,' Kerr said. 'She has really taken over that coaching mode. We like hearing that younger voice. She gets what we're going through. And since she can't go through it herself right now, she's really helping us.'
Reczkiewicz was in her best coaching form during Thursday's indoor practice. She was putting balls on tees for the hitters while discussing various things with other teammates.
She's doing everything she can to enforce the 'Bengal way' for coach Nick Fuentes. And to that end, she isn't about to let the brace on her left leg stop her.
It helps when your teammates listen.
'I feel it's a big thing that the girls look up to me,' Reczkiewicz said. 'Especially on certain days, when we practice with our JV team, knowing he has faith in me to push those younger girls as well.
'Things like that keep me going, knowing that I can't play right now.'
Reczkiewicz was projected to be one of Oak Forest's leading hitters. As a sophomore, she had a .461 batting average with 12 doubles, seven home runs and 42 RBIs.
Like many Bengals, however, Reczkiewicz is a multisport athlete. This past fall during a volleyball match, misfortune hit her in a major way.
'We were actually playing Lemont for conference,' Reczkiewicz said. 'I went up to block and I came down to the ground wrong. My (left) knee kind of just buckled, went out and went in, in all these different directions.
'The thing was, I didn't hear anything pop. So I was like, 'OK, this maybe isn't as bad.''
But it was. Reczkiewicz, who was in the middle of being recruited by Central Connecticut, underwent knee surgery for a torn ACL and meniscus in late October.
The good news? She committed to Central Connecticut. The bad news? She couldn't go trick or treating on Halloween.
'I didn't, yeah,' Reczkiewicz said, smiling. 'It was one of those things that I didn't want to go outside in 30 degrees on my crutches.'
There would soon be an ironic twist to the situation. During basketball season, her freshman sister Kelsey also suffered an ACL injury. They would wind up spending the winter doing physical therapy together.
'We would literally leave right after school,' Reczkiewicz said. 'By the time we'd get home, it was dark out.'
It at least resulted in a silver lining.
'You always have a bond with your sibling,' Reczkiewicz said. 'But now we're very close. This is something she knows she can come to me for advice because we had the exact same thing.'
The post-surgery prognosis has been good. Sort of. It will be a long shot for Reczkiewicz to be back for the state playoffs. But she's still looking forward to her senior season at Oak Forest.
In the meantime, Fuentes is in the process of trying to replace someone he called 'irreplaceable.'
'Everything about Morgan is softball,' Fuentes said. 'She lives for the game. She was a strong hitter in the three hole, just a force in the lineup. And she was not afraid to tell the girls when things weren't going the right way, what needed to be done.
'It was a blow to lose her. My heart dropped when I found out because I know how much work she puts in and cares about the program. Now, we're just trying the best we can to piece together a Morgan without having Morgan.'
He can count on the original to help make sure it's done right.

Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals are looking to get back into contention in the AFC during the upcoming 2025 NFL season. Following a rough all-around 2024 campaign that saw the Bengals finish with a 9-8 record and miss the playoffs, Burrow and company want to win. They have a solid roster and were able to make two key moves by extending both Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. There are still questions about 2024 NFL sack leader Trey Hendrickson's future. That situation will need to get figured out and Cincinnati will need him on the field to live up to its full potential. After that, the Bengals should have a playoff caliber team. "He's an incredible quarterback. He's just fun to watch play. He's exciting when the ball is in his hands," Manning said. "The game is never over. He's calm, he's collected, he doesn't sweat. Out there on the field, off the field ... he's very authentic." Burrow's personal success has been impressive, but he wants a Super Bowl. Manning also talked about that goal and revealed that he expects the 28-year-old quarterback to win a Super Bowl. No direct money for Paycor Stadium in Senate budget, but two potential funding avenues
There is no money specifically for Paycor Stadium renovations in the Ohio Senate version of the state budget, though the budget did include some potential avenues for funding. The Bengals and Hamilton County requested $350 million in the state budget for stadium renovations, which are estimated to cost $830 million in total. Ohio senators announced their version of the state budget on June 3. Like the House budget, it did not include specific funding for the Bengals' stadium renovations, but it did lay out a system for grants for major sports facilities, with the first $600 million grant going to a new stadium for the Cleveland Browns in Brook Park. Money for the grants would come from Ohioan's unclaimed funds. Sen. George Lang, a Butler County Republican, estimates $1.7 billion of those funds have been left unclaimed for so long they're considered abandoned. It's not clear whether the Bengals or Hamilton County could apply for a grant through the new system. The budget language specifically refers to the stadium project in Cleveland. "I hope we can help the Bengals and FC Cincinnati. Whatever we do for one – we treat everybody on a fair basis," Lang said. Sen. Bill Blessing, a Hamilton County Republican, said he is disappointed that the budget did not include a more comprehensive solution to stadium funding, but that the unclaimed funds idea could mean better protection for taxpayers. "Though not sold on the overall idea, at least we're moving in a better direction," he said. The Senate budget also includes language to allow Hamilton County to levy a cigarette tax to benefit a regional arts and culture district. Ohio law already allows the county to create a regional arts and culture district. Blessing said he thinks the cigarette tax could be used not only to fund area museums but also for stadiums. He said it would help take pressure off the county sales tax and property taxes. At least two of the three Hamilton County commissioners would need to vote to put the tax on the ballot and then it would need approval from Hamilton County voters. Hamilton County Commission President Denise Driehaus said she is watching the budget process with great interest to see if the state will make a financial contribution to the Paycor Stadium renovations. Driehaus has said she would like to see one-third of the funding from the county, one-third from the team and one-third from the state. The June 3 version of the Senate's budget is not the final version. Once the Senate approves its version, a conference committee composed of House and Senate members will examine both budget proposals and create a final version that both chambers will need to approve before Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine can sign it. DeWine must sign the budget by June 30, which is the same deadline the Bengals have to let the county know if they plan to extend their current lease. The team also signed former Bengals receiver Trenton Irwin, while they waived Jacksonville-native, WR David White Jr. Advertisement Smoot, 30, was originally drafted by the franchise in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He spent the first seven years of his career with the franchise before leaving via free agency in 2024. Smoot had signed multiple short-term deals with the Jaguars before joining Buffalo for a season.
