ICC WTC Final 2025 SA vs AUS, Day 3 LIVE SCORE UPDATES: Day 2 summary
Day 2 of the ICC World Test Championship Final 2025 was a gripping rollercoaster, with 14 wickets falling and the match delicately poised. Australia began the day strongly, led by captain Pat Cummins, who claimed a sensational six-wicket haul — reaching the milestone of 300 Test wickets — to bowl out South Africa and secure a 74-run first-innings lead.
However, South Africa roared back with the ball. Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi shared six wickets between them to leave Australia reeling at 73/7 in their second innings. Just when it looked like the Proteas might seize full control, Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc stitched together a vital 61-run partnership for the eighth wicket. That stand ended late in the day, though Starc was handed a lifeline when Marco Jansen dropped a tough chance in the final over.
At stumps, Australia led by 218 runs — a potentially match-defining advantage on a deteriorating pitch. With the game swinging wildly and momentum constantly shifting, Day 3 promises more drama in this tightly-contested final.

India suffer sixth consecutive defeat in Pro League, lose 2-3 to Australia

Antwerp , The Indian men's hockey team's wretched run in the European leg of the FIH Pro League continued as it endured sixth defeat in a row, losing 2-3 to Australia, here Sunday. India have already lost matches to Netherlands, Argentina even as all the games were close. Former India captain Manpreet Singh, who played his 400th match on Sunday, failed to inspire his side despite taking the early lead. Sanjay and Dilpreet Singh scored for India, while Tim Brand , Blake Govers and Cooper Burns sounded the board for Australia. India stared on a positive note, dominating the early share of exchanges. Three minutes into the match, India took the lead through Sanjay who scored from a rebound from their first penalty corner. But India's joy was short-lived as Tim Brand equalised a minute later, beating goalkeepr Krishan Bahadur Pathak all ends up. A minute later, Australia took lead when Blake Govers scored from top of the circle, again beating Pathak all ends up. The Kookaburras thereafter completely dominated the proceedings, earning as many as four penalty corners, the last of which was converted by Cooper Burns in the 18th minute. In the 24th minute, Pathak made a good save to deny Davis Atkin. Australia had another penalty corner soon but Pathak was up to the task. In the 27th minute, India secured back-to-back penalty corners but failed to utilise the chance. India bounced back after the change of ends when Dilpreet Singh scored in the 36th minute after being set up by Shilanand Lakra and Abhishek. Thereafter Australia dominated the proceedings. The Kookaburras pressed hard on the Indian defence and earned as many as three penalty corners in the last 10 minutes but Pathak stood firm in the front of the goal to deny the opponents. India will next play Belgium here on June 21.

Cricket-World Test Championship format needs revamping despite riveting final

LONDON, June 15 (Reuters) - A riveting World Test Championship final between Australia and South Africa went a long way to boost the sagging credentials of the five-day game, but the format of the competition is in need of a revamp, according to many of the game's top observers. South Africa beat Australia by five wickets at lunch on the fourth day of a fluctuating contest at Lord's in which the bowlers dominated the opening two days. A total of 24 wickets were taken, but the tables were turned as wickets turned benign and the batsmen changed the course of the match. It was classic test cricket, as good as the excitement from any limited overs contest, but the overall WTC is a bewildering competition, devoid of uniformity and an unbalanced points system. There was much criticism of how South Africa managed to reach the final without playing either Australia and England in the two-year qualifying period. "It's very hard for the average cricket fan to understand who's the best team in the world and how exactly the top two teams make it to the final," said former England captain Michael Vaughan, now a television pundit. The two finalists are decided by a table of test results, with points awarded for wins and draws. The pair with the highest percentage of points available to them advance to the final, which in 2027 could again be at Lord's or in India, according to International Cricket Council officials. But there was a major discrepancy in South Africa playing only 12 tests compared to 19 for Australia and India, and even more by England (22). "I can't remember if I've ever even given any real time to be specifically thinking about the World Test Championship to be honest because it's utterly confusing," added England captain Ben Stokes. Countries are free to decide how many tests they want to play, and in South Africa's case, there is much less of an appetite for test cricket because they lose money. In the next cycle, which starts on Tuesday when Bangladesh begin a two-test series in Sri Lanka, the new champions will play 14 tests, this time including three test series against each of Australia and England but only two against India. Five test series are now only the preserve of contests between Australia, England, and India. "The fixture list is uneven; not everyone plays everyone else, and some have an easier ride than others," wrote Michael Atherton last week. "Everyone knows the WTC in its present guise is flawed, and that solutions, with so many competing interests, are fiendishly difficult," added the former England skipper. Mark Taylor Urges Australian Selectors To Recall Sam Konstas For West Indies Tour

Former Australia Test captain Mark Taylor has urged selectors to recall teenaged opener Sam Konstas for the upcoming series against the West Indies, starting on June 26. The development comes after Australia's new top order failed to fire in the World Test Championship Final against South Africa and lost by five wickets at Lord's. Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne and Cameron Green couldn't make substantial contributions, and with head coach Andrew McDonald hinting that a top-order reshuffle is on cards, especially with Steve Smith suffering a dislocated little finger, a return for Konstas is imminent. "David Warner retired nearly two years ago now and we haven't really found a replacement for him. Although, they really haven't tried that hard either, to be totally honest with you. Travis Head moved up the order (in Sri Lanka), Konstas was left out having debuted at Melbourne with that swashbuckling 60 that he made. "I think going to the West Indies, we've got to bring Konstas back in and I think he will play in a more orthodox fashion. He should be given an opportunity and the fact that Steve Smith won't play in that series makes it a little bit easier for the selectors," said Taylor on Nine's Wide World of Sports show on Sunday. Konstas made 113 in his first two Tests against India, averaging 28.25 and enthralling everyone with a rollicking 60 off 65 balls on debut in the Boxing Day match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. But with Travis Head promoted to open the batting on the Sri Lanka tour, Konstas didn't get a chance and was sent back home. Taylor also believes that with Khawaja at the fag end of his playing career, a change of the guard in the Australian top-order is coming soon. "The other problem that Australia has is Usman Khawaja at the top of the order - he's not playing the quicks as well as I'd like him to be playing them." "The last couple of years he has averaged 34, but if you take out the 200 he made in Sri Lanka on a low and slow pitch, he's averaged 25. We've got a problem with Marnus and obviously Uzzy at the top of the order, so we need to sort that out," added Taylor. He signed off by saying Australia has to get things right before the Ashes takes centrestage. "England will bring a very good quick bowling side and we've got to get that right. We've definitely got to get Konstas in, we've got to give him the opportunity." "He will open the batting with Usman Khawaja - he's on notice too in my side, because people like (Nathan) McSweeney have got to get another opportunity at some stage. It's always a hard one when you get players towards the end of their careers. You want to see these guys finish on their terms, but you're in a national sporting team and you have got to pick your best side for today and also for the future."
