Euro 2028 among events to benefit as UK govt pledges $1.2 billion investment in sport
June 20 (Reuters) - The UK government has pledged to spend more than 900 million pounds ($1.21 billion) to improve grassroots sporting infrastructure and support major events in the country such as Euro 2028, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport said.
More than 500 million pounds would be used to support the delivery of world-class events, including next year's European athletics championships and the start of the men's and women's races of the Tour de France in 2027.
"This major backing for world-class events will drive economic growth across the country, delivering on our Plan for Change," Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said in a statement on Thursday.
Affirming a commitment made by Nandy's predecessor Lucy Frazer in 2023, the government will also invest at least 400 million pounds in communities around the country to build new or upgrade existing grassroots sports facilities.

Sterling set for weekly loss as Middle East conflict overshadows domestic data
June 20(Reuters) - Sterling gained slightly against the dollar on Friday but was set for a loss on the week as uncertainty over the Israel-Iran conflict fuelled demand for traditional safe havens such as the greenback. Weak UK retail data earlier in the session and the Bank of England's decision on Thursday to keep rates unchanged had little effect on the pound. Sterling was 0.2% higher at $1.3495 but eased 0.6% against the dollar on the week, after two consecutive weeks of gains. The dollar was set for its biggest weekly rise in more than a month on Friday. The BoE said it was monitoring risks from a weaker labour market and higher energy prices on the back of the conflict as it held interest rates at 4.25% as expected on Thursday, sending the pound down briefly against the U.S. dollar. "The pound was only lightly touched by a consensus Bank of England hold yesterday," ING FX Strategist Francesco Pesole wrote in a note to clients. "Yesterday's 6-3 vote split for a cut can be interpreted marginally on the dovish side and is allowing markets to reinforce their conviction call on an August cut." Markets now priced in a near-60% chance for a quarter-point cut at the BoE's next policy meeting. The euro was marginally up to 85.43 pence on Friday, set for its second week of gains in a row. Sterling briefly pared some earlier gains against the U.S. dollar after weak British retail sales data, which saw volumes recording their sharpest drop since December 2023 last month, as demand fell after shoppers splurged on food, summer clothes and home improvements the month before. "Retail sales in May brought significant payback" after a "hard to explain" strength in the previous four months, Allan Monks, chief U.K. economist at J.P. Morgan, said. The figures came alongside government borrowing figures which showed a slightly larger than expected budget deficit of 17.7 billion pounds ($23.88 billion) for May. Britain's economy grew at a faster-than-expected pace in the first quarter of 2025 but shrank in April, as a property tax break ended and U.S. tariffs started to sting. JAMES WADE feared he'd never play darts again after suffering a string of illnesses. The Aldershot hotshot claimed the Players Championship 19 title after defeating Scott Williams 8-3 in yesterday's final in Leicester. It was Wade's first ranking title since 2022 and the 19th Players Championship Event in his stellar career. 'The Machine' took out a brilliant 110 checkout to take a 4-2 lead against 'Shaggy'. The World No.10 followed this up with a cracking 120 finish to gain a 5-2 advantage over Williams at the Mattioli Arena. Wade, a ten-time major winner, pearled in a ten-darter to go 6-3 up. Wade sealed the deal with another cracking 110 outshout as he averaged 101.52 and pinged in eight out of nine doubles for the victory. Former World Matchplay champ Wade opened up about struggles with his health and how it impacted his career and rankings before making a terrific comeback to the winner's circle. He said: 'It's been a bloody long time that is for sure. 'I'm really pleased and happy. I felt I have just been lucky the last two games. 'Everyone forgets I had pancreatitis. It's a serious health condition and I went from world number three to plummeting down and out of the rankings. 'I just think everyone takes their health for granted. Luke Littler takes next step with new beautician female 'friend' Faith as he celebrates mum's birthday
Luke Littler has taken the next step with his new female friend, Faith, as he celebrated his mum's birthday on social media. The 18-year-old is enduring a rocky period at the oche, suffering a disappointing defeat in the Premier League final last month when he lost against rival Luke Humphries before crashing out of the World Cup in the first round. Littler, ranked No 2 in the world, partnered World No 1 Humphries at the competition in Frankfurt, but was targeted by the crowd from the first dart and suffered a shock defeat against home favourites Germany. Away from darts, though, Littler is enjoying life. Having just signed a brand deal with McDonald's and appearing on Gogglebox, he has struck up a close 'friendship' with 19-year-old beautician Faith. In May, Littler swapped his darts for drinks as he hit the town with Faith and pals, sharing a picture of the group at a table full of beverages in a pink-lit booth in a mystery location, his arm draped around Faith. Now, the darts world champion has shared another snap featuring Faith, as well as eight other people as they appeared to celebrate Lisa Littler's birthday in Spain. Littler shared the post on social media, captioning it: 'Happy birthday mum,' with a love heart emoji, Spanish flag emoji and a sunglasses emoji. Lisa has been one of her son's biggest supporters, often seen at venues to cheer him on in the infancy of his darts career. Millar comes from Wigan, just 15 miles from Luke's home in Warrington, Cheshire. Eyelash beauty specialist Millar is also believed to have met Littler's parents while visiting the 18-year-old at his mansion. A source told MailOnline: 'Faith and Luke have become firm friends and enjoy one another's company a lot.' The blossoming friendship comes nine months after the world number two split from his previous girlfriend 22-year-old Eloise Milburn last June. At 19, Millar is closer to Luke's own age than Milburn, who was in her twenties when she began dating him while he was just 17 - which saw her face hostility from some online fans, something known to upset both her and Luke. They split before last year's World Championship, though, and Littler has not said he has had a relationship since. Littler has since been much more guarded about making his love life a public spectacle than he was when he very publicly dated Milburn at the same time as he was becoming a public figure thanks to his darts heroics at Ally Pally in December 2023.
