US scientists who deciphered dolphin whistles win prize for animal communication

A $100,000 prize for communicating with animals has been scooped by researchers who have shed light on the meaning of dolphins' whistles.
The Coller-Dolittle Prize for Two-way Inter-species Communication was launched last year by the Jeremy Coller Foundation and Tel Aviv University.
The winning team, the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program led by Laela Sayigh and Peter Tyack from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, has been studying bottle-nosed dolphins in waters near Sarasota, Florida, for more than four decades.
The researchers used non-invasive technologies such as hydrophones and digital acoustic tags attached by suction cups to record the animals' sounds. These include name-like 'signature' whistles, as well as 'non-signature' whistles – sounds that make up about 50% of the animals' calls but are poorly understood.
In their latest work, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, the team identified at least 20 different types of non-signature whistle that are produced by multiple dolphins, finding two types were each shared by at least 25 individuals.
When the researchers played these two sounds back to dolphins they found one triggered avoidance in the animals, suggesting it could be an alarm signal, while the other triggered a range of responses, suggesting it could be a sound made by dolphins when they encounter something unexpected.
Sayigh said the win was a surprise, adding: 'I really didn't expect it, so I am beyond thrilled. It is such an honour.'
The judging panel was led by Yossi Yovel, professor of zoology at Tel Aviv University, whose own team has previously used machine-learning algorithms to unpick the meaning of squeaks made by bats as they argue.
'We were mostly impressed by the long term, huge dataset that was created, and we're sure that it will lead to many more new and interesting results,' said Yovel, adding the judges were also impressed by team's use of non-invasive technology to record the animals' calls, and the use of drones and speakers to demonstrate the dolphins' responses in the field.
Yovel added the judges hope the prize will aid the application of AI to the data to reveal even more impressive results.
Jonathan Birch, professor of philosophy at London School of Economics and one of the judges, said the main thing stopping humans from cracking the code of animal communication is a lack of data.
'Think of the trillion words needed to train a large language model like ChatGPT. We don't have anything like this for other animals,' he said.
'That's why we need programs like the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, which has built up an extraordinary library of dolphin whistles over 40 years. The cumulative result of all that work is that Laela Sayigh and her team can now use deep learning to analyse the whistles and perhaps, one day, crack the code.'
Yovel said about 20 teams entered this year's competition, resulting in four finalists. Besides Sayigh and Tyack's team, these included teams working on understanding communication in nightingales, cuttlefish, and marmosets.
He added the 2025/2026 prize is now open for applications. However as well as an annual award of $100,000, there is also a grand prize up for grabs totalling either $10m in investment or $500,000 in cash.
To win that, researchers must develop an algorithm to allow an animal to 'communicate independently without recognising that it is communicating with humans' – something Jeremy Coller suggested might be achieved within the next five years.
The challenge is inspired by the Turing test for AI, whereby humans must be unable to tell whether they are conversing with a computer or a real person for the system to be deemed successful.
Robert Seyfarth, emeritus professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, who was not involved with the prize, welcomed the win.
'These are outstanding scientists, doing work that has revolutionised our understanding of dolphin communication and cognition. This is well-deserved recognition,' he said.
Clara Mancini, professor of animal-computer interaction at the Open University, added the dolphin work shows technology's potential to advance our understanding of animal communication, possibly one day even enabling us to communicate with them on their own terms.
'I think one of the main benefits of these advances is that they could finally demonstrate that animals' communication systems can be just as sophisticated and effective for use in the environments in which their users have evolved, as human language is for our species,' she said.
'However, on the journey towards interspecies communication, I would suggest, we need to remain mindful that deciphering a language is not the same as understanding the experience of language users and that, as well as curiosity, the challenge requires humility and respect for the unique knowledge and worldview that each species possesses.'

Mysterious dark streaks first observed on Mars in the 1970s are not what many believed they were. Scientists now say the curious features that stretch for hundreds of meters down Martian slopes were likely signs of wind and dust activity — not water. 'A big focus of Mars research is understanding modern-day processes on Mars — including the possibility of liquid water on the surface,' Adomas Valantinas, a postdoctoral researcher at Brown University, said in a statement. 'Our study reviewed these features but found no evidence of water. Our model favors dry formation processes.' Valantinas and the University of Bern's Valentin Bickel coauthored the research which was recently published in the journal Nature Communications. To reach these conclusions, the researchers used a machine learning algorithm to catalog as many of the odd streaks as they could, creating a first-of-its-kind- global Martian map containing some 500,000 from more than 86,000 high-resolution images from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Then, they compared their map to databases and catalogs of other factors, including temperature, wind speed, hydration, and rock slide activity. They looked for any correlations over hundreds of thousands of cases. The authors found that the ominous streaks that don't last for decades, known as recurring slope lineae or RSLs, are not generally associated with factors that suggest a liquid or frost origin. Those factors might include a specific slope orientation, high surface temperature fluctuations, and high humidity. The features were more likely to form in places with above-average wind speed and dust deposition. That points to a dry origin of formation, and they seem to show up in the same locations during the warmest periods of the Martian year before mysteriously vanishing. They concluded that the older slope streaks, which run down cliff faces and crater walls, most likely form when dust suddenly slides off slopes following seismic activity, winds, or even the shockwaves from meteoroid impacts. The streaks appear most often near recent impact craters, where shockwaves may shake the surface dust loose. The shorter-lived ones are typically found in places where dust devils or rockfalls are frequent. 'There were statistically significant correlations between new impact sites and the appearance of nearby slope streaks in certain regions, supporting this view,' NASA said. Previously, some had interpreted those streaks as liquid flows. It's possible that small amounts of water could mix with enough salt to create a flow on the frozen Martian surface, Brown University noted. The red planet was once more temperate, and there is water under the surface of Mars. Others believed they were triggered by dry process. These results cast new doubt on slope streaks and RSLs as habitable environments. 'That's the advantage of this big data approach,' Valantinas said. 'It helps us to rule out some hypotheses from orbit before we send spacecraft to explore.'

A supplement beloved by Bryan Johnson and other biohackers for its age-defying properties might be flawed, new research reveals. Previous animal studies have suggested taurine, an essential amino acid that supports immune health and nervous system function, declines with age. It's found naturally in the body, in various high-protein foods, and it is also added to energy drinks for its potential to enhance mental and athletic performance. It was thought that replenishing it by taking supplements could keep the body young by protecting against damage to DNA and cells. Off the back of the research in 2023, taurine was quickly picked up by those looking to fight the effects of aging and Johnson became one of its proponents, with it added to his daily roster of supplements. But scientists behind a new study claim taurine doesn't actually decline with age; instead it either increases or stays stable and can vary wildly from person to person. Therefore, the amino acid is not a good indicator of age-related changes as originally thought, and taking a taurine supplement may have no effect whatsoever on a person's longevity. What's more, other studies have shown high doses or prolonged taurine intake can actually cause a variety of side effects, including gastrointestinal discomfort, kidney strain, and in rare cases, liver pain or even leukemia. The human body uses taurine for actions in cells, such as energy production, and helps the body process bile acid and balance fluids, salts and minerals. The amino acid also has important functions in the heart and the brain and helps support nerve growth. There are no current recommendations on how much taurine a person should consume or what adequate levels are in the body. However, lower levels have been associated with an overactive thyroid, vision impairment and kidney dysfunction. It may benefit people with heart failure and prevent their condition from worsening by lowering blood pressure and calming the nervous system. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and has been studied for its role in energy production and improving exercise performance. Commenting on the findings of the new study, Joseph Baur, a professor of physiology at the University of Pennsylvania, told Live Science: 'The main takeaway is that a decline in taurine is not a universal feature of aging.' Scientists analyzed data from both humans and animals. Included in the research were 1,000 people aged 20 to 100 years old who had participated in several studies from around the world. In animals, the team analyzed blood from rhesus macaque monkeys ages three to 32 and blood from lab mice ages nine to 27 months old. What surprised the researchers is that over time, taurine levels actually increased with age. Thus, study co-author Maria Emilia Fernandez, a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute on Aging, said taurine is 'unlikely to serve as a good biomarker of aging'. Meanwhile Rafael de Cabo, chief of the Translational Gerontology Branch at the National Institute on Aging who was another co-author of the study, added: 'It's not a reliable biomarker of anything yet. 'I think that we need to be digging into the basic mechanisms… before it can be used reliably as a marker.' Vijay Yadav, an associate professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School who co-authored the 2023 taurine study, is currently taking part in an ongoing clinical trial to see if it could have any effect on aging in middle-aged humans.
