Vi, AST SpaceMobile tie-up to offer direct-to-device satellite connectivity
Vi (Vodafone Idea) on Wednesday said it has tied up with US-based AST SpaceMobile to expand mobile connectivity via satellite to underserved and remote regions in India using the latter's direct-to-device technology.
AST SpaceMobile develops satellites that deliver 4G and 5G connectivity directly to standard smartphones.
"We are not just expanding coverage, we are breaking down barriers to connectivity, enabling everyday smartphones to access 4G and 5G directly from space," said Chris Ivory, Chief Commercial Officer, AST SpaceMobile.
India ranks among the world's largest telecom markets, boasting over 1.1 billion mobile subscribers. Despite extensive 4G coverage and the rollout of 5G networks, gaps in access and connectivity still remain in remote areas. "Satellite communication will complement terrestrial connectivity to further expand broadband cellular access in some challenging terrains where deployment of terrestrial mobile infrastructure might be difficult," the Vi said in a statement.
"Vi has always been committed to leveraging technology to connect every Indian and we see satellite communication as a complement to terrestrial connectivity. As satellite-based mobile access becomes a reality in India, we are looking forward to ushering in a new era of seamless and resilient connectivity," said Avneesh Khosla, chief marketing officer, in a media release.
Satellite connectivity in India
In March this year, two of India's leading mobile services providers, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, announced partnerships with SpaceX to bring Starlink's satellite internet services to India. Under the agreements, Jio and Airtel will offer Starlink hardware through their retail and online platforms, and support customer service, installation, and activation.
Jio aims to leverage its vast network and Starlink's low Earth orbit satellite technology to provide broadband across remote and rural India. Similarly, Airtel plans to integrate Starlink into its connectivity portfolio, using its ground infrastructure and retail presence to expand access, especially in underserved regions like rural schools and healthcare centres.

Amazon orders workers to relocate to Seattle, other hubs stirring concerns
By Spencer Soper and Matt Day Inc. is ordering some corporate employees to move closer to their managers and teams, roiling a workforce already worried about job cuts and warnings from the top that artificial intelligence will shrink their ranks in the coming years. Workers are being told to relocate to such cities as Seattle; Arlington, Virginia; and Washington DC, which in some cases would require them to move across the country, according to people familiar with the situation. Amazon is mostly rolling out the mandate in one-on-one meetings and town halls rather than sending out a mass email, said the people, who requested anonymity because they aren't authorized to discuss company plans. An Amazon spokesperson said 'for more than a year now, some teams have been working to bring their teammates closer together to help them be as effective as possible, but there isn't a one-size-fits all approach and there hasn't been a change in our approach as a company.' Amazon employees have been sharing information about the relocation mandate on the company's internal slack channels, according to documents reviewed by Bloomberg. One employee said their manager informed the team of the need to relocate and told them they had 30 days to make a decision. Then they had 60 days to either resign or begin their relocation process, according to the person, who said they were told there would be no severance for employees who resigned in lieu of relocating. The company spokesperson said 'we hear from the majority of our teammates that they love the energy from being located together, and whenever someone chooses to or is asked to relocate, we work with them to offer support based on their individual circumstances.' When Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy ordered employees to return to the office five days a week beginning earlier this year, there was no requirement that they move to specific offices. Amazon has satellite workplaces around the country, including major metropolitan areas like New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Dallas and Austin, giving workers some flexibility about where they lived. Many employees were hired to fully remote positions during the pandemic. In 2022, Jassy initiated Amazon's biggest-ever round of corporate job cuts, which ultimately eliminated 27,000 positions across the Seattle-based company. There have since been several smaller rounds of reductions targeting particular departments. Telling workers to relocate will likely prompt some to quit, which can be a less expensive way to reduce headcount than executing layoffs and paying severance packages. Jassy on Tuesday said he expects the company's workforce to shrink in coming years due to AI advancements that will be capable of performing some employee functions. The announcement, while not entirely unexpected, set off a round of hand-wringing on internal messaging boards.

PM to flag off first indigenous locomotive for export to Guinea on June 20 in Bihar
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the first locomotive manufactured at the Marhowrah factory in Bihar for export to the Republic of Guinea on June 20, the Railway Ministry said on Wednesday (June 18, 2025). "On June 20, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the first locomotive being exported to the Republic of Guinea," said Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information and Publicity, Railway Board. The Marhowrah facility will supply 150 locomotives worth more than ₹3,000 crore for SimFer's Simandou iron ore project in Guinea, Africa, in three years. According to Mr. Kumar, 37 locomotives will be delivered in the current financial year, 82 in the next, and the remaining 31 in the third year. All locomotives will feature air-conditioned cabins and will be capable of hauling 100 wagons in pairs at maximum permissible speed, he said. The Ministry noted that three types of tracks— broad gauge, standard gauge and cape gauge— have been laid at the Marhowrah factory for manufacturing these locomotives. The export project was secured through global competitive bidding, highlighting India's capabilities in world-class manufacturing. Mr. Kumar said the locomotives will come equipped with best-in-class emission standards, fire detection systems and ergonomic crew cabins with modern amenities such as a refrigerator, microwave and waterless toilet. "They are fitted with DPWCS (Distributed Power Wireless Control System) for synchronised operations and superior freight handling. This positions the Marhowrah factory as a global hub for locomotive exports, boosting local employment and technology," he said. The Ministry said the export will help build infrastructure for Guinea's largest iron ore project and strengthen India-Africa economic ties. "This is a shining example of Atmanirbhar Bharat powering global infrastructure through innovation and quality manufacturing. We hope that Indian firms receive more such orders from other countries in future," Mr. Kumar added.
