Sprint ace Ewan stuns cycling with retirement

Yahoo06-05-2025

Caleb Ewan, at his peak one of Australian cycling's greatest talents, has stunned the sport by announcing his immediate retirement.
Ewan delivered his bombshell decision on social media, saying events of the last two years - especially around his messy exit from top Australian team Jayco AlUla - have "taken a significant toll on my relationship with the sport".
The 30-year-old sprint ace started this year without a team and it looked as though his career could end prematurely.
But he joined high-profile British outfit INEOS Grenadiers and made a successful return in late March, winning his first comeback race.

He then claimed a WorldTour-level win last month and appeared to be back on track.
"The last few years haven't been easy, but in 2025 I found something again - not just legs, but belief - thanks to the INEOS Grenadiers," he wrote.

"They gave me space, trust and the environment to rediscover what I am capable of. I won again.
"But the truth is that even when I crossed the line first, that feeling - the one you chase for years - faded quicker than it used to.
"My experiences of the last seasons, in particular the second half of 2024, has taken a significant toll on my relationship with the sport. I'm glad I didn't let that period define the end of my career."
Ewan's woes can be traced back to 2021, when he was at the peak of his powers and one of road cycling's premier sprinters.

He publicly declared his bold ambition that season to win stages in each of cycling's Grand Tours and was on track, with two in the Giro d'Italia.
But Ewan crashed at the end of stage four in the Tour de France and suffered a broken collarbone that needed surgery.

While he returned to racing a few weeks later, he was never the same rider.
He left Belgian team Lotto Dstny in strained circumstances at the end of 2023 and returned to Jayco AlUla, where he had started his professional career.

But that did not go well and in early January, it suddenly became apparent that Ewan's profile had disappeared from the team website.
By the end of the month, he had signed with INEOS Grenadiers.
Ewan has had a rich cycling career, with five stage wins at the Tour de France and another five at the Giro d'Italia.
He was also runner-up twice at Milan Sanremo, one of cycling's five one-day monuments and a major career goal that Ewan never quite cracked.

Ewan won nine stages at Adelaide's Tour Down Under and for several years was one of the biggest stars in Australian cycling.
"Over the course of my 11-year career, I've achieved more than I ever imagined possible," Ewan posted.
"The journey has exceeded every expectation I once had and I'm deeply grateful.
"But what once felt like everything to me no longer does."
Ewan thanked many people in his post, including his parents, wife Ryann and their three children, and his long-time manager Jason Bakker.

Mystics' Jade Melbourne chips tooth in gruesome injury after getting elbowed by Aces' Chelsea Gray

Washington Mystics guard and Olympic medalist Jade Melbourne lost part of a front tooth after taking a wild elbow to the mouth in Thursday night's win over the Las Vegas Aces. Melbourne was injured in the first quarter when she tried to drive past a screen from Aces guard Chelsea Gray. Gray's elbow made direct contact with Melbourne's mouth, and as she bent over in pain. A tooth appeared to fall onto the court. A bloodied Melbourne was taken off the court, and although she remained sidelined for the remainder of the game, she did join her team on the bench. Gray was assessed a flagrant foul. Mystics coach Sydney Johnson said after the game that Melbourne did require stitches, Yahoo Sports reported. Despite the initial shock of the injury, Melbourne appeared in good spirits after the game. Teammate Georgia Amoore shared a post on Instagram that showed Melbourne smiling with a bloodied mouth and chipped tooth and two thumbs-up. Melbourne, an Australian basketball player who earned a bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, is averaging 6.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists this season. It was not immediately clear if she would miss any additional time because of Thursday's injury. The Mystics secured a 94-83 win even without Melbourne and the team's leading scorer, Brittney Sykes, who was sidelined for the second straight game with a lower leg injury. The WNBA has seen an uptick in physical plays this season. Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has been on the receiving end of many of those plays, but Melbourne's injury Thursday ranks as one of this season's most serious. Head gives Australia fresh hope in Windies battle

Travis Head has given Australia a fresh scent of victory in the first Test after delivering his second half-century against West Indies in Bridgetown. It helped Australia reach lunch on the third day in an improving position. Having resumed on 4-92, the tourists shored up their position by reaching 5-181, growing their lead from 82 to 171. Head had contributed 59 as Australia were all out for 180 in their first innings. West Indies' reply of 190 left the match tantalisingly poised. The partnership is broken who?#WIvAUS | #FullAhEnergy — Windies Cricket (@windiescricket) June 27, 2025 On a difficult surface in Barbados, Head made 61 before becoming the only Australian wicket to fall in the first session. Despite a reputation built on aggressive batting, here he went about his work with great patience, testament to his quality and character. He eventually fell to a straight one from Shamar Joseph that kept low and thundered into his pads. There was no doubting that and Head departed with a rueful smile without considering a review. He had earlier had a moment of good fortune when dropped at second slip by Justin Greaves when on 21. Head took advantage of that reprieve to put on a 102-run partnership with Beau Webster, the highest of the match. After Head's departure, Webster had progressed to 49, with Alex Carey defending confidently on eight as the Australian middle-order continued to make life difficult for the West Indian attack.
