Italy see off Moldova 2–0 as Spalletti bows out of tumultuous tenure
REGGIO EMILIA (Italy), June 10 — Italy got off the mark in their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with Monday's 2-0 win over Moldova, Luciano Spalletti's last game as Italy coach.
Giacomo Raspadori and Andrea Cambiaso scored in each half for the Azzurri who sit third in Group I, trailing leaders Norway by nine points, and are at risk of missing a third straight World Cup.
Only top spot in the group gives direct qualification for next year's finals in the USA, Canada and Mexico and even having played two games fewer than Norway, Italy's best chance looks to the be finishing second and reaching the play-offs.
However Italy were denied a place at the last two World Cups after being beaten in the play-offs and are in the midst of an identity crisis following their disastrous title defeat at last year's European Championship.
Spalletti, who presided over a dismal last-16 exit at the Euros, coached Italy on Monday having already been told that he was to be sacked after the 3-0 thumping dished out by Norway in their opening qualifier on Friday.
'When you're the national team coach you have no excuses, it's you who selects the squad,' said Spallett to public broadcaster Rai.
'It's the coach who has to make the difference and unfortunately I wasn't able to do that.'
Spallettti goes out after another uninspiring match played in a flat atmosphere in Reggio Emilia, where Italy got the three points needed but did little to inspire confidence in the future whoever replaces Spalletti.
Claudio Ranieri is widely reported as being the Italian Football Federation's preferred candidate to replace Spalletti and guide Italy towards the World Cup, even though he retired from coaching after performing a near miracle with Roma this past season.
Ranieri is 73 years old and working as a consultant for the American owners of his boyhood team Roma who he dragged from near Serie A's relegation zone to fifth place.
But that hasn't stopped a media campaign practically begging the man nicknamed 'Sir' to come out of retirement for the second time to take control of a national team at possibly its lowest ebb. — AFP

Inter Milan hand Chivu the helm after Inzaghi era ends in Club World Cup reset
MILAN, June 10 — Inter Milan have chosen Cristian Chivu to lead the Serie A club into a new era, confirming the former Romania defender as Simone Inzaghi's replacement ahead of the upcoming Club World Cup. Still reeling from humiliation at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, Inter have gambled on novice Chivu after failing to get Cesc Fabregas from Como. 'Inter Milan is pleased to welcome Cristian Chivu as the new head coach of the first team. The coach has signed a contract with Inter until 30 June 2027,' Inter said in a statement. Chivu has agreed a deal with Inter worth a reported €2.5 million (RM12 million) a season, taking charge of one of Europe's biggest clubs only a few months after beginning his senior coaching career with Parma. Parma confirmed Chivu's departure earlier on Monday, setting up his arrival at Inter where he won three Serie A titles and the 2010 Champions League as a player. Chivu was part of the iconic Inter team which won the treble under Jose Mourinho 15 years ago, a feat which the San Siro club tried and spectacularly failed to repeat this season. In total Chivu played 169 times over six seasons with Inter, and he also knows Serie A well due to the four seasons he spent at rivals Roma before moving north in 2007. The 44-year-old replaced Fabio Pechia in February and guided Parma to Serie A safety in his first job in football of any form since leaving Inter's youth set-up last summer. 'I thank the club, staff, players and fans for having believed in me and our project,' said Chivu on Instagram. 'Together we overcame obstacles and wrote a page (in Parma's history) which will remain in my heart.' Chivu's first match in charge of Inter will be against Monterrey in the Club World Cup next week, in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. He will lead a group of players who looked dead on their feet during their 5-0 hammering against PSG in the Champions League final late last month. Inzaghi left Inter in the wake of the Italians' thumping in Munich, taking the job at Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal who are also participating the Club World had made light of serious financial problems in turning Inter into one of Europe's best teams in his four seasons at the Milan giants, but his final campaign ended in a bitter fashion and with no trophies. Inter had looked a decent bet for the Serie A, Champions League and Italian Cup treble when they booked a place in the semi-finals of Europe's top club competition by knocking out Bayern Munich. At that point Inter were three points clear at the top of Serie A, but they ended up conceding the Scudetto to Napoli on the final day of the season and were knocked out of the Italian Cup by AC Milan. Barcelona let Lenglet go as Atletico seal permanent move
MADRID, June 10 — France defender Clement Lenglet terminated his contract with Barcelona on Monday and signed a three-season deal with Atletico Madrid, where he was already on loan, the two Spanish clubs announced. 'Clement Lenglet and Atletico de Madrid have reached an agreement over the signing of the French international keeping him at the club until 2028. The centre-back, who played on loan this season, arrives on a free transfer,' said Atletico on their web site. Lenglet won the confidence of Atletico's Argentine coach Diego Simeone this year, making 34 appearances in all competitions. At the end of the season, the 29-year-old was recalled to the France squad by Didier Deschamps for the Nations League Final Four. Lenglet joined Barcelona from Sevilla in 2018 and made 160 appearances for the Catalan club but he also had spells on loan at Tottenham and Aston Villa before Atletico last season. According to the Catalan press, the amicable termination of his contract should enable Barca, the Spanish champions, to free up their wage bill to comply with the financial fair play regulations and recruit this summer. World Cup 2026 host cities say fans ‘welcome'

(Fifa pic) NEW YORK : American World Cup host city officials assured Monday that overseas fans would be welcome at next year's tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico despite 'uncertainty' amid ongoing concerns over visas, border controls and social unrest. In a briefing in New York that came just over a year from the opening game of the tournament on June 11, 2026, officials said President Donald Trump's administration remained 'extremely supportive' of the World Cup. Since returning to power, Trump has started a global trade war, threatened to annex Canada and launched a border crackdown that has led to harsh treatment of foreign visitors attempting to enter the US. Trump's immigration offensive has in turn led to civil unrest, with clashes in Los Angeles over the weekend triggered by large-scale raids last week. Eleven American cities will host the bulk of the games at next year's World Cup, which is being co-hosted by three nations for the first time and has been expanded to include 48 teams. Executives from the local organising committees for the 11 US World Cup venues gathered in New York on Monday to brief on logistical aspects of the tournament, including transportation, stadium access, fan zones as well as general access to the US. 'For each of our cities, we want to be prepared to make any person that is coming and makes the decision to come to the US or come to this World Cup feel that they are welcome,' said Meg Kane, head of the Philadelphia organising committee. Kane said while officials were planning 'within uncertainty' due to matters taking place at national and international level, the Trump administration was firmly behind the tournament. 'We do not play a role necessarily in what is happening in terms of the decisions that are made,' Kane said. 'What we can say is that the current administration – while there are certain situations that we are monitoring closely – has been extremely supportive of Fifa World Cup.' Alex Lasry, the chief executive of the New York/New Jersey World Cup committee said officials were bracing for 'millions' of fans inside and outside the stadiums irrespective of the political climate. 'I think sports transcends geopolitics,' Lasry told AFP. 'I think we've seen that for Olympics. We've seen it for other World Cups, in Qatar or Russia. 'People want to come to these mega sporting events, and they're going to travel to ensure that they're able to cheer on and see their team play. 'Our job as a host committee is to make sure that we are putting on an event and making sure that our city and our region is ready to welcome everyone who's able to come to the World Cup,' added Lasry, who was previously an assistant secretary for tourism in president Joe Biden's government. Los Angeles World Cup committee vice-president Jason Krutzsch said organisers were working to ensure fans 'understand that they are welcome in Los Angeles and will have an amazing World Cup experience.' 'We're working closely with the administration,' Krutzsch said adding that Trump's World Cup Task Force was established to 'make sure that we can welcome fans from around the world and deliver an exceptional experience.' As well as hosting games at the World Cup, Los Angeles will also stage the Super Bowl in 2027 before hosting the 2028 Olympics. 'We really want to make sure that 2026 goes well,' Krutzsch said. 'We're really focused on delivering an exceptional experience in 2026 for the world. 'But they're also learning opportunities (…) to be successful in 2028.'
