Man appears in court following €10.6m cocaine seizure
A 61-year-old man has appeared in court in the Republic of Ireland, charged with possession of cocaine worth €10.6m (£8.4m).
Gardaí (Irish police) seized 152kg of the drug, which was verified by Science Foundation Ireland, on Tuesday.
A heavy goods vehicle was intercepted on the M9 in County Kilkenny shortly after 10:00 local time and there were searches of two business premises and a residential property in Waterford.
Investigators believe the drugs were loaded in Spain and transported to Ireland on behalf of several organised crime groups, Gorey District Court heard on Sunday.
Gardaí objected to an application for bail.
The man was refused bail and remanded in custody.

According to court documents filed by prosecutors, a genital swab from the woman revealed male DNA. 'A known DNA sample from the defendant will produce evidence relevant to the question of his guilt,' wrote Assistant District Attorney Erin Murphy, chief of the domestic violence and sexual assault unit, in court papers. Crosbie objected to giving a sample on grounds of unreasonable searches and seizures, court filings show. 'My client is not concerned about what the DNA is going to return or say,' said Crosbie's lawyer, Daniel C. Reilly, at the time. 'He is adamant that he had no physical contact with her.' The status of the DNA testing wasn't immediately clear on Thursday. In court Thursday, Crosbie wore an off-white suit and had a neat crew cut. Tattoo artist found guilty of murdering man with sword
A man who attacked a father of two with a sword in a County Cork car park has been found guilty of murder. Ian Baitson died in hospital in March last year, four days after being injured in the assault on the Newtown Road in Cobh. The 33 year old had a "sub-total amputation" of his left leg and suffered catastrophic bleeding, the court heard. Dylan Scannell, 31, of O'Rahilly Street in Cobh, had pleaded guilty to manslaughter but the jury found him guilty of murder. Mr Baitson, who worked as a chef, died at Cork University Hospital on 19 March 2024. Tattoo artist Scannell now faces a mandatory life sentence. The jury at the Central Criminal Court in Cork took just over four hours to deliver their verdict, according to Irish broadcaster RTÉ.
