Sullivan County to host Southwestern Indiana Adoption Event
SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Local animal shelters across the Wabash Valley will team up to help many animals find their forever homes.
The Sullivan County Humane Society is hosting the 2nd annual Southwest Indiana Adoption Event on Saturday, June 7th at the Sullivan County 4-H Fairgrounds.
The event will feature a variety of dogs and cats from at least six animal shelters and rescues from around the area.
'It's very important to bring shelters and rescues together because we do not compete against each other,' said Julie Tow, President of the Sullivan County Humane Society. 'We're a coalition, and the main goal is to get these animals adopted into forever homes.'
The event begins at 11 a.m. and will run until 4 p.m.
Pet adoption fees at the event will be $50 for dogs and $25 for cats.

US Army Corps of Engineers offering two free days this month at recreation sites nationwide
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The U.S Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is offering two free days this month at its recreation sites across the country. It announced Friday that it will be waiving fees in observance of the USACE birthday on June 16 and Juneteenth National Independence Day on June 19. The USACE has more than 2,600 recreation areas nationwide. Things to do this weekend in Kansas City June 6-8 According to the USACE, the waiver covers fees for boat launch ramps and swimming beaches. The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities (group picnic shelters) and events, the USACE said. 'Other agencies or vendors that manage recreation areas on USACE lands are encouraged, but not required, to offer the waiver in the areas that they manage,' the USACE said in a news release. The USACE also offers other fee-free days throughout the year to mark days of celebration and commemoration, including Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, National Public Lands Day and Veterans Day. In April, the USACE announced it would be closing dozens of campsites and recreation areas across the Midwest. It then launched a new website to keep visitors informed about which sites remain open. Memphis retirement community celebrates annual First Responders Day
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An appreciation day that was hosted by a local retirement community on Friday focused on showing gratitude to first responders for the work they do. There is a multitude of stories from those at Trezevant, a retirement community, when it comes to why they are so appreciative of the men and women who often come to their rescue. 'A day to honor and celebrate, they are over here quite a bit, helping out with residents. A day to really appreciate them,' said Katy Stanfield, Trezevant Community Liaison. For the tenth year, Trezevant has hosted this First Responders Appreciation Day. 'We always do the blessing of the badges, which is really special. They all went home with a little token for them to keep in their pocket to feel safe when they are out there,' said Stanfield. Firefighters, along with Police, including K9 officers like duno, mounted patrol officers, those who patrol on motorcycles, harbor patrol officers, and others, received well-deserved praise for the work they do day in and day out. 'I couldn't be more proud of the officers that serve this city,' said Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis. 'Our officers work hard, they do, every day.' 'Honoring our officers who graduated a class just last night, of 49 new officers. Really, really exciting,' said Memphis Mayor Paul Young. K9 officer Dono, by the way, is set to retire next month. We certainly wish him a happy retirement. When it comes to today's event, each first responder was also given a guardian angel they can carry in their pockets for protection. New Lenox Augustinian Sisters reflect on their time with Robert Prevost
In his first official appointment, Pope Leo named a woman to head a major Vatican office. Sister Simona Brambilla is now the prefect of the department responsible for all the Catholic Church's religious orders. Nuns at the Augustinian Nuns Monastery in New Lenox celebrated the appointment and their new Holy Father. Bob Prevost was a frequent visitor to the monastery as an adult. Ninety-year-old Sister Carmen Miravalles and 87-year-old Sister Mary of Good Counsel Villar met the pope in 1969 at St. Augustine Seminary High School. Special Section: Pope Leo 'We've known him for many, many years,' Sister Miravalles said. 'We love him.''I remember he was very kind, also very special,' Sister Mary of Good Counsel Villar Augustinian order asked the women to move from Spain to provide the seminarians with an example of a contemplative life.'Our life was dedicated to prayer,' Sister Mary of Good Counsel Villar said. Young Bob Prevost often showed his appreciation to the sisters.'He would come with baskets of apples for the sisters and (was) very helpful, very easy to help us in anything that we needed,' Sister Miravalles said. When Prevost was elected pope, it was evidence of the power of prayer over a lifetime.'I know he will be a very good pontiff because the whole time he has been like our brother,' Sister Mary of Good Counsel Villar said.
