Irish Premiership: Ruaidhri Higgins praises 'outstanding' McManus goal in Crues win

BBC News07-05-2025

After Coleraine booked their place in the European play-off final with a 1-0 win over Crusaders, BBC Sport NI caught up with Bannsiders boss Ruaidhri Higgins and Crues manager Declan Caddell.
Higgins on winning in his first game in charge: "Absolutely delighted with the result we started the game extremely well, some of the play first half was top drawer and what we want going forward.
"Second half we had to dig deeper and show a bit of grit to see the game out. All we wanted was to get to Sunday and we've done that."
On Declan McManus' winning goal: "It was an outstanding goal some really good play down the right side and lovely cross from Corey (Smith) and tucked away well by Declan."
On Sunday's final: "It would be a brilliant achievement if we could secure European football, we're playing against a really good side in Cliftonville, but we will be ready and looking forward to it."
Caddell on the defeat: "It was a game of two halves, Coleraine were very good first half, took an early goal well which was hard to recover from and they warranted the lead in the game. Second half it was all pressure from us, but we didn't do enough, we had no clear-cut chances.
"The players gave everything, I'm really disappointed for them, it has been a rollercoaster of a year. Tonight was a sore one, but we will learn a lot from it."

Tottenham to name Thomas Frank as head coach after agreeing deal with Brentford

Tottenham have reached an agreement with Brentford to make Thomas Frank their next head coach, the PA news agency understands. Spurs quickly set their sights on Frank after Ange Postecoglou was sacked last week – only 16 days after he secured Europa League success – and made an official approach to Brentford on Monday. Advertisement Discussions between Tottenham and Brentford initially centred on Frank's current terms at the west London club, which were set to run until the summer of 2027 and contained a release clause in the region of £10million. Justin Cochrane will move to Tottenham alongside Thomas Frank (Mike Egerton/PA) Further talks were required over which backroom staff Frank would take to Spurs but, after days of negotiations, a deal was struck with Brentford on Thursday. Highly-rated Brentford first-team coach Justin Cochrane will follow Frank to Tottenham and in the process return to the club where he started his coaching journey. London-born Cochrane has been part of Frank's backroom staff since 2022, after he initially developed as a coach in Spurs' youth-team before a spell at Manchester United. Advertisement

King Charles' Royal Ascot runner SMASHED in betting after Willie Mullins books ‘world's best jockey' for £57,000 ride

KING CHARLES' big Royal Ascot runner has been SMASHED in the betting - after Willie Mullins booked the 'world's best jockey' for the £57,000 ride. Four-year-old gelding Reaching High has already made history after becoming the first horse owned by a reigning monarch to be trained in Ireland. 3 3 He was beaten a short-head on his first run for Mullins at Leopardstown in May over just 1m4f. The Ascot Stakes, to be run at 5pm on Tuesday, is over a mile further, so Reaching High's stamina will be massively tested. But if anyone can get him ready then it's Mullins - and the jockey booking is a big help too. Mullins - who's also signed 'one of the most talented jockeys around' for two more big rides on day one - and King Charles have pulled some strings and got Ryan Moore, who's been crowned world's best jockey four times. Moore rode Estimate to Ascot Gold Cup glory for the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2013. And he is in awesome form this year, winning the Oaks and Coronation Cup at Epsom last weekend as well a whole host of other Group 1s. Layers at Ladbrokes rushed to cut Reaching High's odds for the Ascot Stakes, where victory is worth a shade under £57,000. He was 10-1 before the Moore jockey booking became public news and is now into just 6-1. The firm's Cal Gildart said: "With Ryan Moore's two Epsom Group 1 victories fresh in the mind, Reaching High's Ascot Stakes odds almost halved on the news of his booking. "Punters are clearly high on the King and Queen's horse, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him go off as favourite." Speaking previously of his delight to train a Royal runner, Grand National-winning trainer Mullins said: "It's an honour and a big surprise to be asked. "It's nice to have a horse in that position and it's very exciting. "I'm probably looking at the two-and-a-half-mile race (Ascot Stakes) but we'll look at both staying races on the first day. "When you look at his pedigree, it's all stamina. He seems to stay very well." . Remember to gamble responsibly
