John Swinney's NHS pledges face backlash as waiting times soar

John Swinney has promised since becoming First Minister that he will turn around the ailing health service. But deeds are more important than words and the experience of patients can be poor. Scots are sick of having to endure the 8am lottery of trying to secure an appointment with a GP. They are fearful of ending up in accident and emergency lest they are faced with an excruciating wait. And hundreds of thousands of patients remain on waiting lists for treatments and operations. New figures on ambulances being stuck on hospital forecourts are a further cause for concern. In 2019, just 16 per cent of ambulances spent more than three quarters of an hour at hospitals before being deployed again. The figure shot up to 52 per cent last year and is sitting at 55 per cent for 2025. The First Minister keeps insisting the NHS is on the right track and says more procedures will be carried out. But patients are impatient and they want the NHS to work for them. Swinney will make a speech at a hospital today with a message of renewal for public services. He will say: 'Public services first built in and for the 20th century must become rooted instead in the realities of the 21st. Our public realm reshaped; our nation renewed and reborn for this new age.' Scots have heard this tune before and they are becoming angry with the SNP on the NHS. The gap between rhetoric and delivery is huge and the NHS will be a major election issue next year. Deadly error The criminal record of a trans killer did not show up when a lawyer asked for information on their previous convictions from the Crown Office. Alan Baker was jailed for 19 years for knifing a man to death and then changed gender behind bars. Now a trans woman known as Alex Stewart, the record showed no previous convictions. The error, and let us assume the authorities are guilty of nothing more than negligence, has apparently been corrected. But campaigners are right to ask whether our system is robust enough to make sure a criminal record cannot be erased by a simple change of identity. The integrity of the justice system depends on transparency. An individual's previous convictions matter.

Gangland thug flees to Spain amid fears of being targeted in another underworld hit

Sean "Lugs" McGovern, sworn enemy of Edinburgh crime boss Mark Richardson, has fled to Spain. Gangland thug Sean 'Lugs' McGovern has fled to the Costa Del Sol amid fears of being targeted in another underworld hit. McGovern, 41, quit for a fresh start in Spain after recently being released from jail. Sources claim he was even hanging out with hood Ross Monaghan before he was fatally gunned down last month alongside Eddie Lyons Jnr. Drug dealer McGovern is a sworn enemy of Edinburgh crime boss Mark Richardson and was brutally slashed by his gang during a home visit in 2016. A source said: 'Lugs couldn't be bothered with all the hassle in Edinburgh and didn't want to be constantly looking over his shoulder. 'After being slashed a few years back, he knows Richardson doesn't mess about. His son is being brought up by Richardson's brother, so the issues will never go away. 'He's gone to Spain and is making contacts over there. After spending the best part of 16 years inside, he's enjoying freedom in the sunshine. He was even spotted hanging about with Monaghan before he was killed. They enjoyed a mutual hatred of Richardson, so it's no surprise they became pals.' In a recent snap, McGovern is seen enjoying a beer with his gang of cronies in an Irish bar. In 2016, he was targeted in the slashing in Edinburgh city centre while about to return to prison after home leave. Two hitmen set upon him with blades – witnessed by a Daily Record reporter and photographer – before fleeing in a Skoda. One of Richardson's chief lieutenants was later jailed for six years for his role in the ambush. McGovern spent nine days on the run after fleeing from an open jail almost two years ago. A description issued by police included details of the scar left on his face after the 2016 attack. He was caged for 16 years in 2009 after admitting heroin dealing and a gun attack on an Edinburgh pub. After early release in 2018, he was ordered to do 80 hours of unpaid work for spitting on a prison guard. He was then hauled back to jail after smashing up his phone as police looked on. Richardson, 38, is at the centre of an ongoing gangland feud with Dubai-based Mr Big, Ross McGill. It has led to multiple firebombings and violent attacks in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Former care home manager caged for preying on vulnerable young girls

Roger Shaw sexually abused two 'exceptionally vulnerable' schoolgirls while serving as deputy officer at a children's home in Southhouse, Edinburgh, during the 1970s and 1980s. A former children's care home manager who carried out a historical campaign of sexual abuse against young girls has been jailed and put on the sex offenders register. Roger Shaw molested two 'exceptionally vulnerable' schoolgirls while deputy officer at the children's home in Southhouse, Edinburgh, in the 70s and 80s. Shaw, now 79, made sexual comments to his victims and branded one traumatised youngster 'a baby killer' after she was forced to undergo an abortion. The pensioner, from Roslin, Midlothian, denied all the allegations but was found guilty of five charges by a jury following a four-day trial at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last month. He returned to the dock for sentencing on Friday where Sheriff Fiona Sharp said: 'You were in a position of authority over all of your victims and, with the exception of a colleague, your victims were children who were exceptionally vulnerable.' Solicitor Paul Smith, defending, told the court his client suffers from 'a variety of health issues' and continues to maintain his innocence. Sheriff Sharp jailed Shaw for 15 months and placed him on the sex offenders register for 10 years. He was also handed a non-harassment order banning him from having any contact with one his victims for five years. The trial heard evidence from two victims, now in their 60s, who said Shaw had abused them while they were under his care at the children's home from 1977-81. One woman said she was sexually assaulted by Shaw as she folded clothes in the home's laundry room. She said the manager had groped her breasts. The second victim told the jury she was assaulted by Shaw in a pool when he swam between her legs and had intentionally touched her private parts. The women both said they had made numerous complaints about Shaw's behaviour towards them but their concerns were 'brushed under the carpet' by the home's management. A third woman told the jury she worked alongside Shaw at the care home and the pair had taken some of the children on a trip to Gairloch in Wester Ross. She said she was sharing a room with two girls and a drunk Shaw stumbled in and, after climbing into her bed, groped her breasts. Shaw was arrested after a victim came forward two years ago and reported what had happened to her to police.
