
UV vision, fire sensors, a QR code for love?: A quick look at how animals see the world
It's easy to make the mistake of assuming that all animals experience the world as we do.
The truth is that, beyond our version of reality lies a world of eyes that see differently, sounds we cannot hear, and colours we can barely imagine.
Reindeer, for instance, can see ultraviolet light. (Imagine what the Aurora Borealis looks like to them.)
They actually rely quite heavily on this ability. Because both animal urine and lichen absorb UV light, the reindeer can use their special receptors to detect the former, which helps them avoid predators and court potential mates, and find the latter, so they can stay alive in winter.
Both appear as sort of anti-beacons: dark blotches against bright, reflective snow.
Birds and insects use ultraviolet light to feed and find the right mate too. But here there is a flip side: their ability to see UV affects how they are hunted. Spiders, for instance, spin UV-reflecting webs that double as prey magnets. Insects fly straight to them, possibly mistaking them for the natural bright spots on nectary flowers.
Out in the oceans, meanwhile, the mantis shrimp is seeing its coral world in colours so rich, it has 16 to 21 different photoreceptors (for our three).
These photoreceptors are vital because of how colour is lost in water. Even as little as two metres under the surface, the reds vanish first, their wavelength absorbed most easily. They are followed by the yellows and greens. This is why coastal waters often appear blue. Amid all this, the mantis shrimp's unusual eyes help it see its way to food and away from predators.
Birds, meanwhile, would appear to have among the most vibrant views of the world.
European starlings and hummingbirds let ultraviolent light guide social interactions and courtship to such a degree that they are believed to choose their mates based on patterns in plumage that we will never see. A sort of QR code, almost, for love.
From vision on to sound, the insect world is full of bizarre and brilliant adaptations in this arena. Grasshoppers, crickets and locusts, for instance, have some of the tiniest ears on the planet.
These, as you may remember from school, are perched on their knees. (Some insects have ears on their antennae, some on their abdomens. Hearing is so crucial to survival among these creatures that they have evolved to essentially put the ears wherever they can best do their job.)
Perhaps the strangest 'extra-sensory' ability I've ever heard of, though, is the heat-detection organ in fire-chasing beetles. These black bugs that look like something out of an Egyptian tomb are found in Central and South America, South-East Asia and the Caribbean.
They can sense high heat (as from a forest fire) from more than 100 km away. They do this using specialised infrared sensory-pit organs on their chests.
Snakes have such organs too, and it helps them frame thermal images of their surroundings, and find warm-blooded prey in the dark.
The beetle, however, is cast in a different mould. It doesn't track forest-fire signals so it can fly in the opposite direction (as surely anything should?). No. It — and tell me this isn't straight out of a horror movie — tracks these signals so it can fly straight to them.
Nathan Schiff, an entomologist and researcher with the US Department of Agriculture's Forest Service, says he has often turned up to the scene of a blaze to find thousands of these beetles already there. 'I never see a swarm making their way to a fire. I have walked 2 km to a fire and not seen a single beetle along the way. But got to the burnt and there are thousands,' he says.
There's more. They make their way to flames in this manner because they prefer to mate and lay their eggs in the charred remains of scorched trees. This way, they can be reasonably sure the eggs will be safe from predators, and from plant defences. Adults die after mating. The eggs hatch as larvae, pupate a year later, and a new generation of the beetles eventually leaves the charred forest.
And so what seems absurd, unnatural even, turns out to be just another way of being. There's a lesson in there somewhere, for our own vast and varied species.

Private lunar lander from Japan crashes into moon in failed mission
A private lunar lander from Japan crashed while attempting a touchdown Friday, the latest casualty in the commercial rush to the moon. The Tokyo-based company ispace declared the mission a failure several hours after communication was lost with the lander. Flight controllers scrambled to gain contact, but were met with only silence and said they were concluding the mission. Communications ceased less than two minutes before the spacecraft's scheduled landing on the moon with a mini rover. Until then, the descent from lunar orbit seemed to be going well. CEO and founder Takeshi Hakamada apologized to everyone who contributed to the mission, the second lunar strikeout for space. Two years ago, the company's first moonshot ended in a crash landing, giving rise to the name 'Resilience' for its successor lander. Resilience carried a rover with a shovel to gather lunar dirt as well as a Swedish artist's toy-size red house for placement on the moon's dusty surface. Company officials said it was too soon to know whether the same problem doomed both missions. 'This is the second time that we were not able to land. So we really have to take it very seriously,' Hakamada told reporters. He stressed that the company would press ahead with more lunar missions. A preliminary analysis indicates the laser system for measuring the altitude did not work as planned, and the lander descended too fast, officials said. 'Based on these circumstances, it is currently assumed that the lander likely performed a hard landing on the lunar surface,' the company said in a written statement. Long the province of governments, the moon became a target of private outfits in 2019, with more flops than wins along the way. Launched in January from Florida on a long, roundabout journey, Resilience entered lunar orbit last month. It shared a SpaceX ride with Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost, which reached the moon faster and became the first private entity to successfully land there in March. Another US company, Intuitive Machines, arrived at the moon a few days after Firefly. But the tall, spindly lander face-planted in a crater near the moon's south pole and was declared dead within hours. Resilience was targeting the top of the moon, a less treacherous place than the shadowy bottom. The ispace team chose a flat area with few boulders in Mare Frigoris or Sea of Cold, a long and narrow region full of craters and ancient lava flows that stretches across the near side's northern tier. Plans had called for the 2.3-metre resilience to beam back pictures within hours and for the lander to lower the piggybacking rover onto the lunar surface this weekend. Made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic with four wheels, ispace's European-built rover — named Tenacious — sported a high-definition camera to scout out the area and a shovel to scoop up some lunar dirt for NASA. The rover, weighing just 5 kilograms, was going to stick close to the lander, going in circles at a speed of less than one inch a couple centimeters per second. It was capable of venturing up to two-thirds of 1 kilometer from the lander and should be operational throughout the two-week mission, the period of daylight. Besides science and tech experiments, there was an artistic touch. The rover held a tiny, Swedish-style red cottage with white trim and a green door, dubbed the Moonhouse by creator Mikael Genberg, for placement on the lunar surface. Minutes before the attempted landing, Hakamada assured everyone that ispace had learned from its first failed mission. 'Engineers did everything they possibly could' to ensure success this time, he said. He considered the latest moonshot 'merely a steppingstone' to its bigger lander launching by 2027 with NASA involvement. Ispace, like other businesses, does not have 'infinite funds' and cannot afford repeated failures, Jeremy Fix, chief engineer for ispace's US subsidiary, said at a conference last month. While not divulging the cost of the current mission, company officials said it's less than the first one which exceeded $100 million. Two other US companies are aiming for moon landings by year's end: Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin and Astrobotic Technology. Astrobotic's first lunar lander missed the moon altogether in 2024 and came crashing back through Earth's atmosphere. For decades, governments competed to get to the moon. Only five countries have pulled off successful robotic lunar landings: Russia, the US, China, India and Japan. Of those, only the U.S. has landed people on the moon: 12 NASA astronauts from 1969 through 1972. NASA expects to send four astronauts around the moon next year. That would be followed a year or more later by the first lunar landing by a crew in more than a half-century, with SpaceX's Starship providing the lift from lunar orbit all the way down to the surface. China also has moon landing plans for its own astronauts by 2030.

Europe suffers its largest diphtheria outbreak in 70 years
The largest diphtheria outbreak to strike Western Europe in 70 years has been affecting vulnerable people such as migrants and the homeless since 2022, new research said Wednesday. Diphtheria is a highly contagious bacterial infection that can attack the respiratory tract and spread throughout the body, causing a sore throat, fever and other symptoms. For unvaccinated people, it can be fatal in around 30 percent of cases, and is deadlier for children, according to the World Health Organization. In 2022, there was an unusual surge in the bacteria that causes diphtheria -- Corynebacterium diphtheriae -- in several European countries, particularly among recently arrived migrants, according to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine. That year 362 cases were recorded by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Contact tracing and screening helped tamp down the outbreak, but rare infections have continued to be recorded, the researchers said. A total of 536 cases, including three deaths, have been recorded across Europe since the start of 2022. Patient samples from 10 countries showed that 98 percent of the cases were in males with an average age of 18. Almost all had recently migrated. "The outbreak, which mainly affected migrants from Afghanistan and Syria, was not the result of people being infected in their countries of origin, but during their migration journeys or in their places of accommodation in European countries," said a joint statement from France's public health agency and the Pasteur Institute. The genetic similarities between the strains seen in people from different countries suggests that there was a "recent point of contact, outside the country of origin" at the source of the outbreak, the statement added. The exact areas affected by the outbreak remains unclear. But a genetic link between the 2022 strain and the one detected in Germany this year indicates that "the bacteria continues to circulate quietly in Western Europe," the statement said. Vaccination is very effective at fending off diphtheria, and the researchers emphasised the importance of immunisation programmes for the general public. They also called for European nations to do more to ensure their most vulnerable people avoid contracting the disease. That included raising awareness of the symptoms among doctors and those in contact with migrants and the homeless, as well as increasing access to vaccines and antibiotic drugs.

Secret leprosy infected the Americas before European arrival
Representative image (AP) What to know: Leprosy is one of the oldest human diseases and originated in Eurasia or Africa A new study has found a different species of leprosy-causing bacteria existed in the Americas before European settlement. Scientists once believed Europeans brought leprosy to the American continents via infection from the bacterial species Mycobacterium leprae. But now a new study published in the journal Science reveals that a different form of leprosy-causing bacteria — called Mycobacterium lepromatosis — was already circulating in the Americas for at least one thousand years. Leprosy was therefore already affecting American indigenous peoples well before European colonization. Mycobacterium lepromatosis in America The study authors analyzed more than 800 samples taken from ancient remains in Canada and Argentina. The genomes of the bacteria taken from the samples were reconstructed, analyzed, and dated. Comparisons between the samples showed the bacterial genomes were of distinctive branches of the lepromatosis species at each end of the continent. However, they remained genetically similar. This suggested that the bacteria species had spread rapidly across the Americas, probably covering the landmass in just a few hundred years. Leprosy is caused by two bacteria species, not one. Leprosy is an ancient disease Leprosy has been infecting humans for thousands of years. The disease presents as multiple numbing skin lesions. If left untreated, it can result in nerve damage, muscle weakness, paralysis and blindness. Today, leprosy can be treated with antibiotics, but ancient sufferers weren't so fortunate. Skeletal records from 2,000BCE have been found in India with traces of the disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. These are matched by written records of leprosy cases in ancient literature from Indian, Chinese and African civilizations, as well as stories in the Abrahamic religions. Often, these ancient descriptions associated the affliction with stigmas of immorality or ritual uncleanliness. But in 1874 the Norwegian doctor Gerhard Armauer Hansen discovered that leprosy was caused by the microscopic organism Mycobacterium leprae. In 2008, doctors in Mexico found another leprosy-causing bacteria species — Mycobacterium lepromatosis — in a leprosy patient. Before this, it was believed leprae was the only pathogen capable of causing the disease. Now both forms of the bacteria are known to cause it. Europeans spread diseases, leprosy too Nicolas Rascovan, head of the Microbial Paleogenomics Unit at the Pasteur Institut in France led the investigation. He and his colleagues estimate lepromatosis and leprae diverged from a common ancestor about one million years ago. "The diversification happened probably independent of humans," Rascovan told DW. The arrival of the first European fleets to the Americas in 1492 marked the introduction of new diseases to the Americas. Leprosy — in the form of the leprae bacterium — was among them. Archaeological evidence has shown leprae migrated with human groups out of Africa and into Asia and Europe around 40,000 years ago. Its introduction to the Americas, along with other diseases, by Europeans devastated indigenous communities and intensified the impact of pathogens that were already circulating before colonization. The discovery of lepromatosis' longer history on the continent further highlights the diversity of pathogens and their complex relationship with humans throughout history, said Rascovan. "Europeans had a very important impact by bringing this new species [leprae] that was absent in America," he said. Leprosy track and trace Rascovan hopes the presence of lepromatosis in the archeological record will improve understanding of pre-colonial disease, especially in the absence of written records. In addition, the study helps understand modern cases of leprosy, especially how it could make the jump from animals like squirrels to humans. "Our work is giving the kick start to really start analyzing, monitoring and understanding the diversity of natural reservoirs [disease carriers]," said Rascovan. He said monitoring the disease and preventing spillovers from animals to humans should be a priority. The disease is still prevalent today — 200,000 cases are reported each year globally. Brazil, India and Indonesia still report more than 10,000 new cases annually, according to WHO data.
