Kerala Water Authority showcases water treatment model at ‘Ente Keralam' expo
Kochi: The stall set up by
Kerala Water Authority
(KWA) at Ente Keralam 2025 trade fair, held in connection with the fourth anniversary celebrations of the LDF govt at Marine Drive, is attracting many.
KWA has set up a miniature model of a
water treatment plant
that showcases pumping water from the river, purifying through various stages and delivering to people via pipelines.
As the public is not allowed to enter KWA plants, the miniature model helps the visitors to understand the water purification processes.
"Three employees worked diligently for a month to create the model which replicates the plant's exact design. A KWA team is also there to explain the operations to the public," said a KWA official.
The model of the purification plant was constructed by KWA employees E D Sanal, C K Vinod and M B Vinod. A lab for testing wastewater is also set up at the spot.

Kerala forest department to launch tree banking scheme to reduce carbon emissions
KOTTAYAM: Taking a cue from the successful 'tree banking' project implemented by Wayanad's Meenangadi grama panchayat under the previous LDF government, Kerala forest department has come up with an enhanced 'tree banking scheme'. The scheme, aimed at expanding tree cover beyond traditional forest areas in the state, will provide financial assistance to farmers to plant trees on their land. The objective of incentivising the planting of trees on private lands is to offset carbon emissions and thereby promote environmental sustainability, said officials. Additionally, the scheme seeks to bolster the supply of timber in the local market. The initiative – being implemented through the Social Forestry wing of the forest department, starting this financial year – intends to provide financial assistance for the planting of various tree species, including teak, rosewood, sandalwood, jackfruit, wild jack, Hopea parviflora (Thambakam), Terminalia tomentosa (Karimaruth), Gmelina arborea (Kumbil), and Lagerstroemia lanceolata (Venthekk). The project will be implemented in phases, with sandalwood receiving financial assistance in the first year. T he forest department will supply the saplings – priced at `55 and `23 based on their size – free of cost. As a prelude to its formal launch by Forest Minister A K Saseendran in July, the department has invited applications from the public to join the scheme. Those who own land or have leased land for at least 15 years can register for this scheme at their respective Social Forestry Range Office with the land-related documents. Individuals who plant and cultivate tree saplings as per the scheme will receive financial assistance for up to 15 years. According to K B Subhash, assistant conservator of forest, Kottayam, the department has received an overwhelming response from the public for the scheme. 'The advantage of the project is that people will get an incentive from Rs 10 to Rs 30 per tree every year, depending on the number of trees planted.

Why PV Anvar looms over Congress, LDF in Nilambur bypoll
The forthcoming by-election to the Nilambur assembly constituency in Kerala's Malappuram is generating huge political interest with the entry into the fray of its two-term independent MLA P.V. who had a falling out with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), after he targeted chief minister Pinrayi Vijayan, is now state convenor of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). He resigned as MLA in January after facing the heat for alleging that additional DGP (director general of police) M.R. Ajithkumar was involved in gold smuggling. Ajithkumar is widely considered as an officer enjoying the trust of the Vijayan Anvar contesting the June 19 bypoll, both the LDF and the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) are gearing up for the used to be a Congress citadel, with Aryadan Muhammed holding the seat uninterrupted for almost 30 years since 1987. Anvar, backed by the LDF, wrested the constituency in 2016 by 11,500 votes and again in 2021. The Congress has fielded Aryadan Muhammed's son Aryadan Shoukath, who had lost the election in 2016. The LDF nominee is the CPI(M)'s M. Swaraj, a youth leader and native of Nilambur. The BJP has announced advocate Mohan George, a former Kerala Congress (Joseph) leader, as its candidate in continuation of the party's efforts to woo the Christian nomination paper as a TMC nominee was rejected by the returning officer as the party had apparently delayed authorisation. Anvar then is technically contesting as an Independent, which could mean political freedom to decide on his loyalties should he do the Congress-led UDF and LDF assess Anvar's impact on the bypoll? 'Anvar cannot change the destiny of the Congress in Nilambur. We will win by a massive mandate and also inflict a shock on the Pinarayi Vijayan government. The people of Kerala are waiting to give their verdict,' said leader of the Opposition V.D. state secretary M.V. Govindan Master considers Anvar politically irrelevant. 'Anvar is of concern for the Congress. We are least bothered about him. We are confident of winning the bypoll,' he told INDIA Anvar remains a force to reckon with in the electoral politics of Malappuram. The 58-year-old entrepreneur-turned-politician has a Congress family background. He started his electoral career with the 2011 assembly polls, in which he contested from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) stronghold of Eranad as an Independent, losing narrowly by 11,246 votes but securing a 41.5 per cent vote contested the Lok Sabha polls in 2014 from Wayanad but failed—a vote share of just 4 per cent. In the 2016 assembly polls, the CPI(M) backed him from Nilambur and again in 2021. Under the LDF banner, he also contested the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Ponnani as an Independent, losing by over 193,000 was favoured by the CPI(M) as he lent the party political mileage in Malappuram against the IUML. But relations strained after he was denied a ministerial post in the second innings of the Vijayan government. Whether or not he wins, Anvar can arguably determine the outcome of the election since he has a captive vote base of around 25,000 in Nilambur. Good reason for the LDF and the UDF to keep fingers crossed till counting to India Today Magazine

Over 42000 MSMEs shutdown past 9 years under CPI(M) rule in Kerala: BJP
Thiruvananthapuram, May 28 (UNI) Nine years of misgovernance by the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government have severely damaged Kerala's industrial landscape, with over 42,000 MSMEs forced to shut down, State BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar has alleged. An increasingly hostile business environment has forced major companies such as Hindustan Unilever and Kitex to exit the state under the CPI(M) rule, the BJP chief said in a message. "The tragic death of NRI entrepreneur Sajan underscores the growing sense of despair within the business community," he said. "Outdated communist ideologies like 'Nokku Kooli' and business-unfriendly practices continue to repel private investment, leaving the state's youth with dwindling job opportunities and an uncertain future," he blamed.
