The US International Trade Commission's (ITC) Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) issued an initial ruling on April 26, siding with Oura and stating that both rival products infringe on key elements of its patented smart ring technology.
The ruling, first reported by website ZDNet, could lead to an import ban on Ultrahuman and RingConn rings in the US — one of the fastest-growing markets for biometric wearables.

ET
reported
on April 28 that Ultrahuman is in talks with WestBridge Capital for a new funding round after talks with Japanese investor SoftBank fell through.
What is Oura alleging?
Live Events
Oura claims that the Ultrahuman Ring and RingConn Smart Ring copied not just the ring form factor, but also the core technology behind its patented sleep and health tracking capabilities. The company filed its complaint in August 2023, citing multiple US patents covering hardware design, sensor integration, and signal processing algorithms.

According to a company spokesperson quoted by ZDNet, both competing products infringe on 'every element of every asserted claim' in Oura's intellectual property. Oura has also accused the companies of reverse-engineering its ring by purchasing and disassembling retail units.
What did the judge say?
In the April 26 initial determination, the ITC judge found that:
Both Ultrahuman and RingConn infringed all asserted claims of Oura's valid patents.
Ultrahuman submitted false evidence, including claims of operating a manufacturing facility in Texas — which was found to be fabricated.
Oura was the only party to present a credible witness during the proceedings.
The judge also stated that the US wearables market remains highly competitive, noting that major players like Apple, Samsung, and Fitbit offer a wide range of alternatives to
smart rings
— undercutting any claim that Oura is attempting to monopolise the space.
What happens next?
The initial ruling will now be reviewed by the full six-member ITC Commission, which is expected to issue a final determination by September 26, 2024.
If the ruling is upheld:
The Commission may issue exclusion orders, banning imports of Ultrahuman and RingConn rings into the US.
It could also issue cease-and-desist orders, prohibiting sales through ecommerce channels like Amazon or direct-to-consumer websites.
Why this matters
Founded in 2013, Oura was an early mover in the smart ring space. The Oura Ring Gen3 and its successor offer:
Sleep tracking and readiness scores
Menstrual and fertility cycle prediction
Heart rate, body temperature, and SpO2 monitoring
Early illness detection via respiratory signals and temperature trends
The company has raised over $350 million, with recent product updates including an AI-powered health assistant, a partnership with Dexcom, the acquisition of Finnish metabolic health startup Veri, and the launch of its fourth-generation ring with upgraded sensors.
What it means for rivals
Ultrahuman, which raised $35 million in late 2023, has expanded rapidly in India and international markets. RingConn, meanwhile, retails heavily in the US through Amazon and its own DTC website. A final ruling against them could curb US sales, deal a blow to expansion plans, and potentially trigger redesigns or licensing discussions.
'We're happy with the initial determination, which validates our position and the strength of our patents,' an Oura spokesperson said on April 29, 2024.

Donald Trump says China ‘totally violated' trade agreement: ‘So much for being Mr Nice Guy!'

US President Donald Trump on Friday accused China of violating its tariff deal with them, and added that he would no longer be 'nice' on trade matters, reigniting tensions between the countries. In a post on TruthSocial, Trump said, 'Two weeks ago China was in grave economic danger! The very high Tariffs I set made it virtually impossible for China to TRADE into the United States marketplace which is, by far, number one in the World. We went, in effect, COLD TURKEY with China, and it was devastating for them. Many factories closed and there was, to put it mildly, 'civil unrest.' I saw what was happening and didn't like it, for them, not for us.' Also Read: Donald Trump calls Elon Musk 'terrific', announces joint Oval Office presser on 'last day' 'I made a FAST DEAL with China in order to save them from what I thought was going to be a very bad situation, and I didn't want to see that happen. Because of this deal, everything quickly stabilized and China got back to business as usual. Everybody was happy! That is the good news!!! The bad news is that China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US. So much for being Mr. NICE GUY!' Trump added. Trump's accusations come soon after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that trade talks with China were "a bit stalled," in an interview with Fox News. Also Read: Trump administration may add temporary tariffs of up to 15% using existing law: Report US trade representative Jamieson Greer, in a CNBC interview, echoed Trump's allegation, saying that America was concerned with China's purported non-compliance with the tariff deal. "[The US] did exactly what it was supposed to do, and the Chinese are slow rolling their compliance, "said Greer, adding that China's actions needed to be discussed and addressed.

IGNOU, IIT Bombay launch AI initiative for regional language learning

Distance learning platform leader Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on Project Udaan, an AI-driven translation platform to promote inclusive and equitable education. Udaan integrates optical character recognition (OCR), layout preservation, domain-specific glossaries, and human-in-the-loop editing to deliver high-fidelity translation of academic and technical content into Indian languages. Through this collaboration, IGNOU aims to make its extensive educational resources available in multiple regional languages, thereby expanding access for learners across the country, a statement read. The collaboration supports the goals outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, particularly the emphasis on multilingual education, digital access, and academic equity, the statement added. The signing ceremony, held on Friday at the IGNOU Headquarters, was chaired by the Vice Chancellor of IGNOU. The event was also attended by senior academic leadership. Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan, the chair professor in Digital Entrepreneurship at the Bank of Baroda and principal investigator of Udaan, represented IIT Bombay at the event. 'This partnership with IIT Bombay is a powerful alignment with our vision to democratize higher education. Through Project Udaan, we aim to bridge the language divide and empower learners in every corner of India,' the V-C of IGNOU said. Prof. Ramakrishnan said, 'Udaan is designed to serve the linguistic and educational diversity of India. This MoU marks a critical step in translating that vision into impact at scale, with IGNOU's vast learner base.' Prof. Nayantara Padhi, a professor at the School of Management Studies and MoU coordinator from IGNOU, said, 'This collaboration reflects IGNOU's commitment to educational equity and innovation.' 'By integrating AI-enabled translation tools with our academic delivery, we are opening new doors for learners in regional and rural contexts who will now have access to high-quality content in their own languages,' she added. 'It also contributes to national missions like Digital India and Bharat Bhasha, strengthening India's position in culturally grounded and inclusive AI research,' the notification read.
