Oman clinch 2nd consecutive West Asia Beach Volleyball title
MUSCAT: Oman's national men's beach volleyball team was crowned champions of the West Asia Men's Tour, hosted in the Qatari capital, Doha, with the participation of top teams from across the continent. The title came after a deserved 2-0 victory over the host nation, Qatar.
The national team, led by the outstanding duo of Mazen al Hashmi and Hood al Jalboubi, delivered an exceptional performance throughout the tournament, proving their worth as front-runners. They entered the final match with great confidence and clear on-court chemistry.
The final began with Oman asserting dominance early. Mazen al Hashmi opened the scoring with a powerful spike, followed by a successful serve from Hood al Jalboubi to make it 2-0. The duo continued their brilliance as Hood added two more points through powerful serves, and Mazen extended the lead to 5-0.
Oman players celebrate after winning the championship
Qatar attempted a comeback through player Mahmoud Essam, who scored his team's first point. However, Hood al Jalboubi responded with another strong serve that deflected off a Qatari player and out of bounds, adding to Oman's tally.
Saif al Majeed scored Qatar's second point, but Oman's cohesive performance and their ability to capitalise on their opponent's mistakes saw them widen the gap to 7-2.
Oman maintained control, exploiting Qatar's shaky defense, extending their lead to 15-9. Near the end of the set, Mazen al Hashmi showcased his skill with a clever shot for point 16, followed by a Qatari error from Saif al Majeed that gifted Oman another point. Oman closed the first set comfortably with a 21-13 win.
In the second set, Mazen al Hashmi once again led the way with a successful block to open the scoring. Qatar momentarily leveled the score, but Oman quickly regained control as Qatar continued to falter. Oman gradually extended their lead to 14-10.
Despite Qatar's attempts to rally, Oman maintained focus, and the duo of Al Hashmi and Al Jalboubi sealed the second set 21-14, securing the match and clinching the West Asia Tour title deservedly.

National team coach Badr al Subhi expressed his delight with the achievement, saying, We congratulate Oman and all beach volleyball enthusiasts on this well-deserved title, which marks our second consecutive win after claiming the previous edition. The players rose to the occasion today, delivering a focused and disciplined performance from start to finish, which enabled us to secure a comfortable victory over a strong team like Qatar.
Al Subhi described the win as a key milestone in the team's preparation journey, adding, Our focus now shifts to the upcoming tournament in Jordan. We will give the players a short break of no more than three days before resuming serious preparations through an intensive training camp aimed at boosting our physical and technical readiness to continue our success. He concluded by thanking the Oman Volleyball Association for its support of the national team.

PSG blank Inter 5-0 to win first CL title
MUNICH, Germany: After almost 15 years of huge investment, frequent disappointment and occasional humiliation, Paris Saint-Germain got their hands on the UEFA Champions League trophy on Saturday, allowing their Qatari owners to bask in the glory of an emphatic triumph. PSG could not win European football's biggest prize in previous seasons with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, or later with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, and even after that when they added Lionel Messi to the mix. But they have done it now after shifting the focus away from signing glamorous superstars and letting a brilliant coach in Luis Enrique work with a hungry, dynamic young team. PSG have been Europe's best side in 2025, but the display against Inter Milan in Munich topped it all as they romped to a 5-0 victory, the biggest win in the final in the competition's history. It was ultimately worth the long wait for the Gulf owners who arrived in 2011 when Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) bought an ailing club. Qatar got the perfect World Cup final in 2022, when Messi's Argentina beat Mbappe's France on an epic night in Doha, and now Qatari-owned PSG have the most stunning Champions League final win. It is easy to forget now, but they lost three of their first five games in the tournament this season. "We had a difficult start. Everyone criticised us and doubted us. Lots of people didn't believe in our project," PSG president Nasser al Khelaifi told broadcaster Canal Plus. "The objective now is to win again. It has taken 14 years of hard work but we are building something for the future." Khelaifi, who is close to Qatar's ruler and holds several influential positions in football including as chairman of the European Club Association, was beaming as he celebrated with the trophy. THE FIRST OF MANY It is just the second time any French club has won it after Marseille in 1993. It surely won't take over 30 years for PSG to win another Champions League, especially as this thrilling young side should now stay together for a long time. The average age of their starting line-up on Saturday was under 25 and their oldest player is Marquinhos at 31 — he has been there since 2013. "I have suffered and I have grown with this team," the Brazilian told broadcaster M6. "My thoughts are with all the players who played here but were not able to win it." It has required 14 years, eight coaches, and over two billion euros ($2.27 billion) spent on transfer fees for QSI to get here. In the last 12 campaigns before this season, PSG reached one final, losing to Bayern Munich in Lisbon in 2020. There were two semi-final defeats, but there have also been humiliating collapses in the last 16 against Barcelona in 2017, Manchester United in 2019 and Real Madrid in 2022. "I said when I came in that the objective was to win important trophies, and the only one missing was the Champions League," said Luis Enrique, appointed in 2023. CLUB WORLD CUP THE NEXT TARGET After Abu Dhabi-owned Manchester City's victory two years ago, also against Inter, it is another triumph for a club with mega-rich Gulf owners. PSG's victory was always only a matter of time. Their revenue last year of just over 800 million euros made them the third-richest club in analysts Deloitte's Football Money League. They sat behind only Real and City, and just ahead of traditional European aristocrats United, Bayern and Barcelona. PSG's last reported annual wage bill was close to double Inter's entire revenues. The difference with past years is that they are now spending the money more intelligently, on the likes of Saturday's two-goal hero Desire Doue, Joao Neves and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Luis Enrique and sporting director Luis Campos recently signed new contracts with the club who also won all three available titles in France this season. PSG will now take away more than 100 million euros just in prize money from winning the Champions League, and there is the chance for more glory and riches as they head to the highly lucrative Fifa Club World Cup in the USA. Qatar-owned PSG's quest for domination will not stop with Europe. "I think it is an incredible competition," said Luis Enrique, whose side face Atletico Madrid in Los Angeles in two weeks' time. "Our aim is to be competitive and to try to win a fifth trophy of the season." — AFP

Oman's Al Rawahi finishes second in Jordan Rally, compatriot Al Zubair wins MERC2
Dead Sea, Jordan – Qatar's Nasser Saleh al Attiyah won all but one of the 12 gravel special stages on his way to a comfortable 17th victory in the Jordan Rally on Saturday. Abdullah al Rawahi and his Jordanian co-driver Ata al Hmoud maintained the pressure on the Qatari throughout day one but a time-consuming puncture delayed the Omani on Saturday's opening Panorama stage and a second issue on stage 10 proved too much for the 2023 regional champion. He finished second overall. Al Rawahi said: 'It was a long two days for us. The first day was quite good, especially with the pace and we were very close to Nasser. Unfortunately, today we had some punctures and we lost some time. Overall, we are very happy with our performance. It has been the closest we have been to him in the battle. 'We don't really have enough seat time in the car. After this rally I have three months off not really driving my car. My car is also an older generation and there is experience difference between me and Nasser. That is why it is good that he is in the championship. He helps us to push and get closer to him. It is still good. We wanted to win but we are still happy.' Al Rawahi also earned victory in the second round of the Jordan National Championship with Shaker Jweihan claiming second place ahead of Sheikh Bader al Fayez. Oman had plenty more to celebrate as Abdullah al Zubair led the MERC2 field at Jordan Rally from start-to-finish with co-driver Taha al Tadjali to strengthen his push for the overall title. Fellow countryman Zakariya al Aamri had arrived in Jordan with a 15-point lead over Al Zubair but his rival's success and fifth place overall has thrown the battle wide open with two rallies remaining. Al Aamri finished second in the category and eighth overall. Al Zubair said: 'We are happy with this result, It is a very difficult race. It is also very hot. It was our first time here. The first day we were flat out and won every stage. Today, we took it slow. We had a good lead and the strategy paid off.' For Al Attiyah, the Jordan win took him to a record 90th career MERC rally win, as he closes in on an unprecedented 20th regional title since 2003. The new partnership with his Spanish co-driver Candido Carrera has a 100% winning record with the duo now taking victories at the opening four rounds of this year's FIA Middle East Rally Championship in Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and now Jordan. 'I am so happy to win again here in Jordan for the 17th time. This means a lot to me,' said al Attiyah. 'This year we have won every rally so far. It feels like a good year, leading the Middle East Championship and leading the W2RC. For this rally, I will give it 10 out of 10. Today, we controlled the pace and tried to make a gap in case we had a puncture.' Qatar's Abdulaziz al Kuwari and his Irish co-driver Lorcan Moore tried different set-ups with their Citroën C3 but struggled to match the pace of the leading duo on this occasion. They did enough to round off the podium places.

Al Attiyah continues perfect start in Jordan Rally
DEAD SEA,JORDAN: Nineteen-time FIA Middle East Rally Champion Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah and his Spanish co-driver Candido Carrera will be aiming to extend their perfect winning start to the season with victory in this weekend's Jordan Rally. The fourth round of the regional rally series gets underway from the Royal Automobile Club of Jordan (RACJ) in Amman on Thursday evening. Spectators are welcome to attend from 18.00hrs with a display of drift and competition cars also on site before the ceremonial start gets underway at Attiyah and Carrera are chasing a fourth successive win this season after victories in Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. While Carrera chases a maiden regional rally title, Al Attiyah will be hoping that a staggering 90 th MERC event win would also net him a record-breaking 17 th success in the Hashemite Kingdom and yet another win with an Autotek-run Škoda Fabia RS. The Qatari arrived in Amman from South Africa, via a brief pit stop in Doha, and has been mentally preparing himself in Amman away from the punishing heat at the Dead Sea. The team carried out a brief shakedown test on Tuesday afternoon, although the Qatari is aware that he has strong competition over a dozen challenging gravel stages in the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea areas this weekend. Fresh from a strong result at the recent WRC Rally of Portugal, Rakan Al Rashed will be hoping to build upon that experience to continue his push for a first ever MERC event win in a Toyota GR Yaris. The Saudi and his Portuguese co-driver Hugo Magalhāes picked up points for second place in Oman and Saudi Arabia and fourth in Qatar to hold second in the title race, albeit 31 points behind Al Attiyah and Carrera. Oman's Abdullah al Rawahi won the event outright on his way to the regional title in 2023 and will also benefit from the experience of local co-driver Ata Al Hmoud this weekend. Al Rawahi is third in the Drivers' Championship with points for second place in Qatar being his best result of the season so far. Shadi Shaban in action at last year's Jordan Rally. Al Hmoud said: 'We have one target and that is to win the rally. It will not be easy, especially with Nasser in the Škoda RS and Rakan with his Toyota Yaris and Abdulaziz with the Citroën. 'We have the experience in Jordan. Hopefully, we can be the top level of the game. The Dead Sea at this time of year is very hot. Weather conditions could be a tough one. I missed Jeddah (Rally Saudi Arabia) because my wife delivered two babies, two young angels, a baby girl and a baby boy. Now I have a bigger family. We will do our best to win this event.' Abdulaziz Al Kuwari is the defending regional champion and also won last year's Jordan National Championship. The Qatari has enjoyed more seat time this season in rallies and cross-country events and showed with a pair of third-place finishes in Qatar and Saudi Arabia that his Citroën C3 is more than capable of challenging for the win. Consistent finishes have lifted Nasser Khalifa Al Atya into fourth in the points' standings in his Ford Fiesta, although the Qatari veteran is also chasing glory in the inaugural FIA Master MERC Championship for Drivers. Three maximum points scores have given Al-Atya a 42-point cushion in that new championship. Shaikh Bader Al Fayez, Ihab Al Shorafa and Bassel Abu Hamdan complete the line-up of drivers in the Rally2 category in three Škoda Fabias. The Omani duo of Zakariya al Aamri and Abdullah al Zubair are separated by 15 points in their current duel for FIA MERC2 honours. Both Subaru drivers are hoping to follow in the footsteps of last year's champion Shaker Jweihan and lift the region's secondary championship title, although Jweihan is one of several regional drivers aiming to stop the two Omanis running away with the title. Jweihan said: 'A new stage and it's the first of the rally. This is a long and important one. I think whoever succeeds there will carry that on throughout the rally. The car feels good and the preparations have gone well. We will see how this rally goes and how the other guys (Zakariya and Abdullah) fit in. We will look at the results and carry on for the experience.' Action in the Jordan Valley in 2024. Kuwait's Jassim Al Muqahwi, Lebanon's Shadi Al Fakih and Palestine's Hamada Uda are also chasing MERC2 honours. The QMMF confirmed the late withdrawal of young Qatari Mohammed Al Marri because of business commitments. But 21 cars are expected to attend pre-event scrutineering at the Dead Sea on Thursday morning, in addition to nine more solely eligible for the opening two rounds of the Jordan National Championship. Rashid Al-Mohannadi has a commanding 45-point lead in the FIA MERC4 category. With Al Marri's absence this weekend, the Peugeot 208 driver faces resistance from Qatari academy rookie Saad Al Harqan and Indian driver Payyaakkal 'Saneem' Panikkaveettil in his two-wheel drive Ford Fiesta. The Jordanian duo of Shadi Shaban and Mohammed Al-Shorafa and Lebanese Joanna Hassoun are also eligible to score MERC points in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IXs. This year's Jordan Rally is supported by Zain Jordan, Guarantee Travel Group, Hala and Bliss FM, Markazia and Toyota Gazoo Racing Jordan. 2025 Jordan Rally – updated entry list: 1.
