The cat is out of the bag: Culprits admit to Fife stencil 'mystery'

The Courier15-05-2025

The mystery of the Fife cats has been solved.
For the past few weeks residents of the Kingdom have been baffled by dozens of images of felines that have appeared on signs and roadsides.
The moggie art had users of the Fife Jammers and Glenrothes Awareness Facebook pages scratching their heads, with nearly 800 reactions and over 100 comments across both pages.
As well as the street art, there was a poster campaign and newspaper adverts in The Courier.
Now the culprits behind the scheme have stepped forward. The cats are a clever viral marketing campaign by local car dealership Your Ford Centre.
They're promoting the new Ford Puma Gen-E. The fully electric version of Ford's incredibly popular small SUV .
It has a 43kWh battery that gives the car a range of 233 miles – making it one of the most efficient EVs on the market
Stuart Prentice and Filip Krawczyk are group marketing executives for Your Ford Centre and came up with the idea for a viral marketing campaign.
The pair were inspired by the 'puddle lights' on the new Ford Puma Gen-E, which beams a puma image onto the pavement when you open the driver's door.
They went to great lengths to keep their campaign secret. Stuart explained: 'We didn't tell any of the staff or management here so that there was no risk of it being leaked, and so they wouldn't share the likes of Fife Jammers posts – so there was no way of it being traced back to us.
'We created the website and email address for new cat on the block from personal computers and contacts again so it was harder to trace back to Your Ford Centre.'
The pair stencilled more than 100 cats all over Fife over the course of a few days. 'The hardest part was actually getting the cats out there without being caught,' Stuart continued. 'Some were done during the day wearing high vis vests on so no-one really questioned what was happening if they did see us, but most were done in the dead of night.
'I was out several times at midnight and beyond to do them.'
Filip said: 'It was hard to keep it a secret, but we have made it happen. It was even harder to keep a straight face while overhearing people talk about it, but what a great feeling to be behind one of the most secret campaigns in the UK automotive industry.'

UK drivers warned to fill tanks 'as full as possible' before Wednesday

Millions of petrol and diesel drivers have been urged to make sure their tank is as "full as possible" on Wednesday - but it's not for the reason you may have heard Motorists have been advised to keep their petrol and diesel tanks as "full as possible" this Wednesday, as temperatures are expected to reach up to 24C from Wednesday to Sunday, peaking at 27C on Friday. According to experts at 1dot, approximately 1-2 per cent of petrol and diesel fuel could evaporate in extreme heat. Specialists from All on the Wrist Auto and Diesel Repair warned: "Excessive heat can lead to increased evaporation of diesel fuel, potentially causing vapor lock and reduced engine efficiency." They added: "Additionally, engine oil may become less viscous in hot conditions, potentially compromising its protective properties." ‌ READ MORE: 'I'm a fashion writer and found an unlikely retailer selling glitzy festival-ready outfits' Hence, drivers are being encouraged to keep their fuel tanks as full as possible, reports Birmingham Live. However, amid the rising temperatures across the UK, online reports have falsely claimed that filling up during a heatwave could result in petrol tanks exploding. ‌ These fake posts, circulating on Facebook and Whatsapp, wrongly assert that five cars have exploded in the past week due to owners filling their tanks to the limit. The RAC has debunked these claims as nothing more than a social media hoax. In response to the rumours, RAC spokesperson Rod Dennis stated: "There is no truth in this." He reassured motorists by saying: "All fuel systems on passenger vehicles are designed to cope with any expansion of fuel, or vapour coming from the fuel. There is no risk of explosion from filling up a fuel tank fully and drivers should have no concerns in doing so. "We'd recommend people avoid the temptation to share misinformation like this via social media." Mr Dennis advised motorists to fill their tanks to the brim when possible, particularly before embarking on prolonged trips. However, as temperatures soar, he warned that it's crucial to adopt preventative measures against typical summertime issues.

Minicab-favourite VW Touran due comeback as radical EV

Smaller sibling to ID Buzz could drawn on retro concepts such as the 2011 Bulli and 2016 Budd-e Open gallery New EV will replace the Touran, plugging the gap between the Golf and ID Buzz The 2016 Budd-e concept is being revisited and could inspire the Touran replacement Close Volkswagen is weighing up the viability of an electric compact MPV to replace the Touran and offer a practical alternative to SUVs for family car buyers. The new model is said to be under internal review, with Volkswagen drawing inspiration from earlier concepts, including the 2016 Budd-e, which was based on an early version of the MEB platform that today underpins the brand's electric cars. Sources familiar with the project have told Autocar that Volkswagen recently retrieved various MPV concepts from storage to support internal discussions and presentations exploring how their design and packaging could be adapted for a new production model. The move reflects a broader shift in thinking inside Volkswagen's Wolfsburg headquarters in Germany, where there is renewed recognition that a dedicated family-focused MPV may still have commercial relevance, especially in the European and Chinese markets, amid a flood of SUV models. Although no production decision has been made, the new MPV would be positioned beneath the ID Buzz, offering a smaller footprint, a lighter weight and a more affordable price. These qualities have led to it being described as a modern-day Microbus (Type 2). The design direction of the new model remains under wraps, although it could be expected to take cues from concepts such as the 2011 Bulli and 2016 Budd-e, as well as production models such as the outgoing Mk2 Touran and 2014 Golf SV. Key considerations include an upright silhouette, short overhangs, a flat floor and a high roofline – all aimed at providing maximum interior space and the sort of overall versatility expected by potential customers, including German taxi fleets. The 2016 Budd-e concept measured 4597mm in length, some 70mm longer than the second-generation Touran and 124mm shorter than the standard-wheelbase ID Buzz. Insiders say new sliding door and seating concepts are being developed in a bid to provide the sort of modernity of potential rivals, including the recently introduced Zeekr Mix. While the existing ID Buzz targets 'premium lifestyle' buyers, the Microbus is reportedly aimed at families seeking a 'no-nonsense, high-utility electric vehicle with sliding rear doors and strong day-to-day usability'. Pressure to act has come not only from persistent Touran loyalists but also from a new generation of electric MPVs emerging out of China - particularly models like the Mix, which has attracted attention for its unique twin sliding doors and highly flexible interior. Launched in 2003, the Touran became a mainstay of Volkswagen's European line-up over two generations. Although overshadowed by SUVs in recent years, it remains one of the most successful European models of its type, with more than 2.6 million units sold globally. While it's still early days, the new MPV is expected to ride on a further developed version of Volkswagen's MEB+ platform or the newer SSP platform. It's likely to a choice of batteries in the 60–80kWh range and either single-motor front-wheel drive or optional dual-motor four-wheel drive. Should the new MPV get the green light, it could be launched by 2027 or 2028, potentially reviving the Touran badge in line with Volkswagen's plan to provide future EVs with traditional names instead of the ID numbers used today. Young adults choose e-bikes over cars or public transport

Driven by health and environmental concerns, 49 per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds said they are more likely to buy an e-bike now than a year ago. The study, by the E-Bike Positive campaign, indicates a nationwide shift towards sustainable travel. However, it reveals the need for education on the risks of unsafe, non-approved e-bike parts. More than half of the 2,000 surveyed said they would buy non-manufacturer-approved e-bike components from online marketplaces if significantly cheaper. Duncan Dollimore, head of cycling UK campaigns, said: "We need to do all that we can to clearly explain the difference between safe road legal e-bikes and potentially unsafe aftermarket alternatives." Jonathan Harrison, association of cycle traders director, said: "Every cyclist deserves the confidence that comes from buying certified, road-legal products, backed by proper advice and ongoing support."
