Shooting leaves 1 dead, 11 hurt on a North Carolina street during a house party

HICKORY, N.C. — Gunfire erupted around a house party in western North Carolina early Sunday and one person was killed and 11 others were hurt, some with gunshot wounds and others with injuries from fleeing the shooting in a usually quiet residential neighborhood, sheriff's deputies said.
Authorities said at least 80 shots were fired in the shooting that began at about 12:45 a.m. People reported running, ducking for cover and scrambling to their cars for safety. Hours later Sunday, law enforcement had made no arrests and was seeking tips from the public in the case.
A statement from the Catawba County Sheriff's Office said a 58-year-old man, Shawn Patrick Hood, of Lenoir, was killed, the oldest of the victims who ranged in age from as young as 16. It said seven of the injured remained hospitalized late Sunday, though updates on their conditions were not immediately released. One of the victims was previously reported in critical condition.
Authorities believe there was more than one shooter, a sheriff's spokesperson said. The agency said it was asking for people who attended the party to contact the office.
Sheriff's office Maj. Aaron Turk aid at a news conference that the shooting occurred in a normally quiet neighbhoord in southwest Catawba County about 7 miles (11 kilometers) south of the city of Hickory.
He said that about two hours before the shooting, someone in another home complained about noise from the party. He added that deputies responded but that investigators don't believe the noise complaint was the motivation for the shooting.
Turk said the crime scene spanned several properties along a neighborhood road, covering about two acres (0.8 hectares), and included outdoor and indoor areas.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Hickory Police Department are investigating the shooting. The FBI is also assisting in the case with a specialized evidence response team, officials said.

Maryland woman charged after allegedly hitting child on plane who called her ‘Miss Piggy'

WJZ via CNN Newsource HAGERSTOWN, Maryland (WJZ) -- A Maryland woman is facing charges after police in Florida said she hit a child who made fun of her weight on a flight from Orlando. Charging documents WJZ obtained say she slammed the child's head into the window of the plane. Kristy Crampton, 46, from Hagerstown, appeared in court earlier this week for child abuse charges after the incident on an Allegiant flight from Orlando to Hagerstown on Memorial Day. Charging documents state she 'began hitting the [juvenile] with her fist and then a water bottle…and 'slammed' his head into the airplane window.' Police did not detail Crampton's relationship to the child. She told authorities he became disrespectful during their trip to Disney World, and when they got onto the plane, 'They got into an argument and [the juvenile] began calling her 'fat' and 'Miss Piggy.'' Police wrote, 'She decided to take the phone away from him, and he got angry. He pushed her arm off of the armrest twice before she responded by smacking him.' One witness told officers the 'woman was not correcting the child, she was abusing him, whipping the [expletive] out of the kid.' WJZ reached out to Crampton but did not immediately hear back. FAA tracks unruly passengers The behaviour does not shock many travellers today. 'I feel like we're living in a time where violence is high, and people are under stress. If I were you, humble yourself before you get on this plane,' said Noemi, a passenger flying through BWI Marshall Airport. 'I can only imagine what she does behind closed doors because if you're doing that in public...' Another passenger, Tony Lawson, told WJZ, 'That's a kid! It's like if someone put their hands on your kid. It's not right.' The FAA has tracked 637 unruly passenger reports so far this year. They trended downward after hitting a high of 5,973 in 2021. The agency reported seeing only 1.6 incidents for every 10,000 flights last week. Also, during Memorial Day weekend, a man having a mental health crisis tried to open the exit door of a Houston-bound plane that diverted to Seattle. Past Maryland incident In 2023, WJZ Investigates covered a man's meltdown on a Southwest flight from Baltimore to Fort Lauderdale over a crying infant. 'Really, out of nowhere, he just kind of blurted out, 'Shut that [expletive] baby up,' and everyone was just kind of stunned,' said Mark Grabowski, who captured a video. 'Myself and a couple of passengers were kind of stunned and tried to calm him down.' ''Take a breath. None of us want to be in a situation. Let's just calm down here.' And he doubled down,' Grabowski said. The FAA said they have 'zero tolerance' for unruly behavior incidents. The agency fined passengers $7.5 million in 2023 alone. Jacob is taking his first-ever flight from BWI Marshall to Los Angeles on Friday. Nick Offerman says he and ‘Parks and Recreation' cast ‘heartbroken' over shooting death of Jonathan Joss

'The cast has been texting together about it all day and we're just heartbroken,' Offerman said in a statement to People. 'Jonathan was such a sweet guy and we loved having him as our Chief Ken Hotate. A terrible tragedy.' CNN has reached out to reps for Offerman for additional comment. On 'Parks and Recreation,' Joss played the tribal elder of the Wamapoke Native American tribe and owner of the Wamapoke Casino. He was fatally shot near his homeover the weekend, according to police in San Antonio, Texas. Police were dispatched Sunday to a location on Dorsey Drive in San Antonio, Texas, for a reported shooting in progress, where officers found Joss, 59, 'near the roadway of the location' and 'attempted life saving measures,' authorities said. The actor was pronounced dead by emergency service responders. A suspect has been arrested on suspicion of murder and an investigation is ongoing, police said. Joss' husband Tristan Kern de Gonzales confirmed his death in a text message to the Associated Press. He said he and Joss were approached and threatened by a man with a gun while checking the mail at Joss' home, which in January was damaged by a fire that also killed their three dogs. 'Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life,' de Gonzales said. He and Joss, who married in February, had previously faced 'openly homophobic' harassment, de Gonzales said. The person who killed Joss yelled 'violent homophobic slurs' before opening fire, he added. 'He was murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving each other,' de Gonzales said. 'Despite online claims of this being a hate crime, currently the investigation has found no evidence to indicate that the Mr. Joss's murder was related to his sexual orientation,' San Antonio police said in a statement posted to social media on Monday night. Beyond his work on 'Parks and Recreation,' Joss voiced the character of John Redcorn on 'King of the Hill.'
