Visitors to France's famed Palace of Versailles can now strike up a conversation with talking statues instead of listening to a traditional audio guide, as part of a new collaboration with artificial intelligence companies, the palace has said.
Versailles late Monday announced a partnership with US-based OpenAI and French start-up Ask Mona to bring a modern AI touch to the iconic 17th-century palace.
Curious visitors can delve into Versailles' rich history by scanning a QR code next to one of some 20 garden statues -- triggering interactive conversations in French, English, or Spanish.
"The Palace of Versailles is now testing artificial intelligence, whose tremendous capabilities will greatly enrich the visitor experience," said the museum's president, Christophe Leribault.
The heritage site welcomes some eight million visitors annually, with OpenAI and Ask Mona saying it was a golden opportunity to showcase their technology in a world-famous location.
"Whether you're a heritage expert, a museum curator, or a visitor setting foot in the gardens of the Palace of Versailles for the first time, there's something for everyone," said Julie Lavet, OpenAI's head of European partnerships.
And Ask Mona's president said this partnership is a chance to highlight AI's lesser explored applications.
"Often, when we think of artificial intelligence, we think of it in terms of productivity, but here, it's really artificial intelligence that is a lever for curiosity," said Marion Carre.

SaveAFox founder Mikayla Raines' husband keeps her promise after tragic death

Ethan Frankamp, husband of the late Mikayla Raines, founder of the widely-followed SaveAFox Rescue, has shared a touching moment as he honours her memory in the way she would've wanted most. In a recent Instagram Story shared through the SaveAFox account, Frankamp posted a video of himself walking one of Raines' most beloved rescues, a fox named Finnegan. In the video, Frankamp reflects on how no matter the weather or workload, Mikayla never skipped Finnegan's walk. 'Even after a long, exhausting day, she made sure he got his time outside,' he says softly in the background. 'I didn't really feel up to it today, but I knew I couldn't let him down. I hope she's watching and that she's proud.' Raines, who built a massive online following for her work rehabilitating foxes through her Minnesota-based nonprofit, passed away recently. Frankamp confirmed her death in an emotional YouTube video on June 23, explaining that his wife had died by suicide. He revealed that Mikayla had long struggled with online harassment, which intensified in recent months. According to Frankamp, she was deeply affected by targeted negativity and personal attacks from people within and outside the animal rescue community. 'She took it to heart,' he said, explaining that the criticism, combined with her mental health challenges, including autism, depression, and borderline personality disorder became too much for her to bear. 'She felt like the world had turned against her,' he shared. The couple share a young daughter, Freya. Though devastated, Frankamp is doing what he can to carry on Mikayla's legacy and honour her after her passing.

British man charged over staged ‘wedding' with 9-year old at Disneyland Paris

Jacky Jhaj, a 39-year-old British man has been charged by French authorities for organising a mock wedding involving a nine-year-old Ukrainian girl at Disneyland Paris. The staged event was brought to police attention after a hired participant contacted authorities in concern. According to Meaux prosecutor, Jhaj is a convicted sexual offender currently wanted in the UK and has been on their sex offenders register since 2016 after being convicted of sexual activity with two 15-year-old girls. One of the hired actors for the wedding, told police he was paid €12,000 to play the bride's father and only realised the bride was a child shortly before the event. Another hired guest described arriving at the venue and seeing 'a little girl dressed in white,' saying the sight left her in tears. Authorities confirmed that the girl had not been physically or sexually harmed, nor was she coerced into participating. The man had gone to lengths to disguise himself, allegedly using professional makeup to alter his appearance. In total, four people were initially arrested, including the girl's 41-year-old mother, a 24-year-old Latvian woman who was to play the bride's sister, and a 55-year-old Latvian man. As of Tuesday, only the British man remains in custody. He has been charged with fraud, breach of trust, money laundering, and identity theft, and is being held in pretrial detention. The prosecutor noted that Disneyland Paris had been misled during the booking process. French outlet BFMTV reported the total cost of the event may have exceeded €130,000. The investigation remains ongoing as officials attempt to determine the full purpose behind the elaborate arrangement.
