Myrto Uzuni, Brad Stuver lead Austin to 1-0 victory over St. Louis City
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Myrto Uzuni scored his first career goal in the first half and Brad Stuver made it stand up through a one-hour weather delay in the second as Austin FC beat St. Louis City for the first time, 1-0 at Energizer Park on Sunday.
Austin (4-2-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute when Uzuni scored with a right-footed shot from the center of the box. The 29-year-old first-year midfielder was making his third start and fourth career appearance. Osman Bukari snagged his first assist this season after collecting two in nine appearances last year.
Stuver finished with three saves in earning his third clean sheet in six starts this season. Thirty of his 31 career shutouts have come in five seasons with Austin. Stuver and company were sent to the locker room in the 68th minute when lightning entered the area.
Ben Lundt had one save for St. Louis City (2-2-2) in his sixth career start. Lundt was coming off a career-high eight saves in a 1-0 loss to the Philadelphia Union last week. The 29-year-old took over in goal for the club after Roman Bürki fractured his hand after opening the season with three straight shutouts.
Austin pulled within a point of the front-running Vancouver Whitecaps in the Western Conference with the victory. It was the first time this season that Austin won without homegrown product Owen Wolff assisting on the winning score.
St. Louis City leads the series 3-1-1.
St. Louis City travels to play Sporting Kansas City on Saturday. Austin will host the Portland Timbers on Saturday.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Blackhawks have hired Mike Vellucci as an assistant coach for Jeff Blashill's first staff with his new team. The Blackhawks announced the addition of Vellucci on Monday. He joins Michael Peca and Anders Sorensen as Blashill's assistants. Goaltending coach Jimmy Waite, video coach Matt Meacham and assistant video coach Adam Gill round out the staff. Advertisement Vellucci, 58, spent the previous five seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was an assistant general manager and director of hockey operations for the Carolina Hurricanes from 2014-19. Vellucci also was an assistant coach for the U.S. when it won the world championship last month. Blackhawks forward Frank Nazar and defenseman Alex Vlasic were part of the winning American team. 'Serving as an assistant coach at the world championship this summer and winning a gold medal for our country alongside Frank Nazar and Alex Vlasic will bring such valuable experience to this group," Blashill said in a release. "That kind of championship-caliber background only makes our team better and I'm excited to get to work.' Blashill, 51, took over as Chicago's head coach last month. AJ Singer's 10th-inning single gives Oregon State 5-4 win over FSU after trailing by 3 in the ninth
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — AJ Singer's 10th-inning single lifted Oregon State to a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Florida State on Friday in the opening game of the Corvallis Super Regional. The Beavers (46-13-1) were down to their last strike in the ninth inning before Jacob Krieg's two-run single tied it up at 4-4, capping a three-run rally. Earlier, Wilson Weber doubled leading off the ninth and later scored on a wild pitch. Advertisement In the bottom of the 10th, Aiva Arquette led off with a double and took third on a single by Gavin Turley. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, still with nobody out, Arquette was forced out at home by the catcher for the first out. Singer then drove the first pitch into center field and Turley scored the winning run. Myles Bailey's go-ahead solo home run in the sixth cleared the bleachers and left the ballpark, giving the Seminoles a 2-1 lead. Florida State (41-15) added a run on a single by Max Williams in the seventh and another on Brody DeLamielleure's two-out single in the eighth for a 4-1 lead. Oregon State starter Dax Whitney struck out 10 in 4 2/3 innings but left after throwing 97 pitches and allowing one run. He has 22 strikeouts over two NCAA Tournament starts. Texas Tech's NiJaree Canady breaks down after heavy pitching load in Women's College World Series
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Texas Tech's NiJaree Canady threw every pitch for the Red Raiders in the Women's College World Series through the first two games of the championship series and the first inning of the third. Canady, who has signed a second NIL deal worth more than $1 million, finally broke down and was pulled after the first inning of Game 3 against Texas on Friday. After dominating much of the World Series, the two-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association Pitcher of the Year gave up five hits and five earned runs on 25 pitches. Advertisement Canady threw 88 pitches on Wednesday, 107 on Thursday and started Friday in the game that will decide the championship. She had no doubt she was going to pitch, despite going the distance in the previous five World Series games. 'I'm always going to play -- like throw my game, throw what I'm confident in,' Canady said after a 4-3 win over Texas in Game 2. 'It's gotten me through three years, so I'm just going to keep doing that.' Cat Osterman, one of the most decorated pitchers in U.S. softball history, says the heavy pitching load has taken a toll on Canady and Texas pitcher Teagan Kavan, but it's not quite like if a baseball pitcher did it. Osterman said because of the way a softball is released, fighting through is more about endurance and leg strength than arm pain. And I know the upper body probably feels a lot worse than anything. And that's not the case for us.' Osterman, who is a general manager of the Volts in the Athletes Unlimited softball league that begins play Saturday, said softball pitching still is tough on the body. 'I'm not going to say there's not effort and strain on the arms, because absolutely there is, but it's not as much the arm as it is the legs,' she said. 'And so for us, it's a matter of can you train your body to have enough endurance, core and lower half, to sustain the impact of 200 pitches a day, etc. Osterman played for Texas back in the day when there were no off days at the World Series. Canady had breaks between games three times during this World Series. The first two were earned because of wins. The third was because there's an off day built into the schedule before the championship series. Advertisement Osterman said she understands why Canady kept going. Osterman, for all she achieved, never won a national title because she pitched during one of UCLA's championship runs.
