A woman sheepishly approaches the counter at Hobbs Pickles in Vancouver's Granville Island Public Market.
'I just finished the container of honey mustard pickles and need to buy another one to take home,' she says.
Half an hour earlier the customer had bought two plastic containers of pickles, and while walking through the market – which is full of food stalls, from fresh fruit to savoury pies and chocolates – she had inadvertently finished one and needed to replenish her supply.

'People ask us, 'Am I going to be OK if I eat the whole container?' And we say, 'We're not doctors, but a lot of people do eat the whole container and they'll bring the empty one back to us.''
Hobson adds that one pickle fiend is the English singer-songwriter
Harry Styles , who bought the shop's entire stock of sweet pickles one day last December.
When Hobson launched the business in 2017, all the pickles were snapped up in two days.
'I thought, 'This is something that no one else is doing,' and we had this ability to connect with so many different people. A lot of food groups don't have the same kind of history that pickles do,' he explains.

China hoping for ‘healthy and stable' relations with Canada after Li-Carney call

China and Canada have agreed to work to 'reset relations' in a phone call between Premier Li Qiang and Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday. After years of 'unnecessary disruption' and 'serious difficulties' in the relationship, China would now like to see it developing in a 'healthy and stable' way, Li said, according to the Chinese foreign ministry. Both leaders acknowledged the importance of engagement and agreed to regularise channels of communication, according to the Canadians. The Chinese statement added: 'Canada is willing to reset Canada-China relations and looks forward to resuming high-level exchanges and dialogue mechanisms in the fields of diplomacy, economy and trade with China.' It said Carney had also 'expressed his willingness to strengthen communication and coordination with China' and 'contribute to promoting global sustainable development'. It was the two sides' first discussion since Carney took office in March and comes after both have repeatedly clashed with the United States.

OnePlus looks to undercut Apple and Samsung with new US$700 tablet

OnePlus USA introduced a slimmed-down version of its premium Android tablet on Thursday, looking to beat competing devices from Samsung Electronics and Apple with its price and specifications. Advertisement The tablet, called the OnePlus Pad 3, will be available on July 8 for US$700 in the US and US$1,000 in Canada. In addition to the thin frame, the company is touting faster performance, an improved display and upgraded multitasking features. The Pad 3's price falls between Apple's 11-inch (US$599) and 13-inch (US$799) iPad Air tablets. Android tablets have failed to make much of a dent in the US to Apple's tablet business. Samsung, and smaller players fill out the rest of the market. The Pad 3 is less than 6 millimetres thick and features a 13.2-inch display with a higher pixel density than the iPad Air, promising crisp text and other visuals. (Apple's far more expensive 13-inch iPad Pro is just 5.1 millimetres thick.) Inside, it is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, a processor found in other recently released high-end devices such as Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge phone. The Apple iPad Air tablet. Photo: Ben Sin Battery life can exceed 17 hours with less demanding usage, according to the company. Alternatively, users can expect as much as six hours playing graphics-intensive video games, the company says. OnePlus also said the battery can recover 18 per cent of capacity after a 10-minute charge. Most iPads are usually graded at 10 hours of battery life.

Is a Canada-India reset on hold? Modi's likely G7 no-show suggests so

India 's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to skip this month's G7 summit in Canada – the first time in six years that he would miss the gathering – in a move seen by observers as a reflection of ongoing bilateral tensions despite the recent change in government in Ottawa. The June 15–17 meeting of leaders from the Group of Seven advanced economies – Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States – will be held in Kananaskis, Alberta. Although India is not a G7 member, it has been regularly invited to take part in meetings in recent years. However, Indian media reports suggest that no invitation has been extended to New Delhi this time by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney 's administration , based on information from unnamed insider sources and the absence of any formal announcement from either government. Modi's expected absence this year is being closely watched for signals on the future of India–Canada relations under Carney, who took office in March following the Liberal Party's leadership election. His party currently leads a minority government after winning the federal election in April. Carney's ascendancy had kindled hopes that the two countries could move past a period of diplomatic estrangement experienced under the previous Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau . The inclusion last month of four Indian-origin politicians in key roles in Carney's government, including Foreign Minister Anita Anand, raised hopes for an improvement in relations.
