Ilia Topuria (16-0) is a former Cage Warriors champion. He joined the UFC in 2020 with a 9-0 record. It did not take him long to make a name for himself. He was ranked No. 14 in the featherweight division after three UFC bouts at 145 pounds and one contest in the 155-pound division. Three of those scraps ended with Topuria winning via knockout.
In his first fight as a ranked featherweight, Topuria dispatched Bryce Mitchell via submission in the second round, earned his first 'Performance of the Night' bonus and moved to No. 9 in the rankings.
A matchup with No. 5 ranked Josh Emmett followed the Mitchell win. Topuria picked up a decision in a 'Fight of the Night' scrap. Topuria's next fight, saw him face Alexander Volkanovski for the UFC featherweight title at UFC 298. Topuria entered that bout as the No. 3 ranked featherweight. He left as the champion after knocking out Volkanovski in the second stanza.
In his first defense of the UFC featherweight crown, Topuria made history, becoming the first fighter to finish former 145-pound champion Max Holloway via strikes, knocking out the ex-champion in the third round of their UFC 308 meeting in October 2024.
When Topuria decided to move to lightweight and give up his featherweight title, he vowed to sit until he got a 155-pound title shot. That fight takes place at UFC 317.
Topuria has a 16-0 record with eight of those wins coming under the UFC banner.

Charles Oliveira (35-10-0-1) has been fighting with the UFC since 2010. He won the vacant lightweight title with his win over Chandler and defended the title once, beating Dustin Poirier. He was booked to face Justin Gaethje in his second title defense, but Oliveira missed weight for that fight, which he won by submission, losing the title on the scale.
Oliveira had a chance to regain the belt in October 2022, but Islam Makhachev submitted him and claimed the vacant belt. Since that loss, Oliveira is 1-1, beating Beneil Dariush by TKO in June 2023 and losing to Arman Tsarukyan via split decision in April of this year.
Oliveira is coming off a November 2024 decision win over Michael Chandler.
Oliveira is the No. 2 fighter in the official UFC lightweight rankings.

Alexandre Pantoja (29-5) is on a seven-fight winning streak heading into UFC 317. The 35-year-old Brazilian made his UFC debut in July 2017 with a split-decision win over Eric Shelton. Pantoja's career had its ups and downs over the next three years, where he went 5-3, but he has not lost since he dropped a decision to Askar Askarov in July 2020.
Pantoja won the UFC flyweight title in July 2023 on the heels of two 'Performance of the Night' submission wins. Pantoja secured the 125-pound title with a split decision win over Brandon Moreno. Since that victory, Pantoja has defended his three times, beating Brandon Royval in December 2023 and Steve Erceg in May 2024. Both fights ended in decision victories. Pantoja picked up his 19th career finish in his third title defense, submitting Kai Asakura at UFC 310 in December 2024.

Kai Kara-France (25-11-0-1) was 17-7-0-1 when he got the call from the UFC in 2019. In his first fight with the promotion, the New Zealander faced a short-notice opponent in Elias Garcia. The two won 'Fight of the Night' honors for their efforts, with Kara-France picking up the decision win.
Kara-France followed that victory with two more wins on the judge's scorecards. Then, in December 2019, he faced future champion Brandon Moreno on the early prelims of the UFC 245 pay-per-view card. Moreno won that bout by decision.
Kara-France went 1-1 in his next two outings. He then tore off three straight wins between March 2021 and March 2022 and found himself as the No. 2 ranked fighter in the division. In his next outing, he faced Moreno, who was ranked No. 1, in the co-main event of UFC 277. At stake was the interim UFC flyweight title. Moreno won that contest by TKO in the third round.
Kara-France followed that setback with a split-decision loss to Amir Albazi in June 2023.
Kara-France was booked to face Manel Kape in September 2023, but a concussion during training camp prevented Kara-France from competing on that card, UFC 293. The 32-year-old would not return to action until August 2024, where he earned a first-round TKO win, and a 'Performance of the Night' bonus against Steve Erceg.
Kara-France enters UFC 317 as the No. 4 fighter in the official UFC flyweight rankings.
We will have more on the UFC 317 fight card as fight night approaches.

Sean O'Malley and Julianna Peña were finished in their UFC 316 championship fights Saturday vs. Merab Dvalishvili and Kayla Harrison, respectively. In the headliner at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., former champ O'Malley (18-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) failed in his bid to reclaim the bantamweight belt from Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC), falling short by third-round submission. Peña (11-6 MMA, 8-4 UFC) was a far bigger underdog and the result aligned when she was forced to tap out by Harrison (19-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) in the second round to drop her women's bantamweight strap. Where do the results leave O'Malley and Peña in their respective divisions? Watch the video above as MMA Junkie senior reporter Mike Bohn plays matchmaker in the aftermath of UFC 316.

Amanda Nunes Says Kayla Harrison Was The Reason She Left Gym

While newly crowned UFC women's bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison and Amanda Nunes say there is no animosity between them, Nunes says Harrison was behind her decision to part ways with her former gym, American Top Team. "Yes, I did [leave because of Kayla Harrison]," Nunes told ESPN after UFC 316. "Because when she got there, she started training with my coach, Mike Brown, Anderson [Franca], everybody, and I knew this fight would happen one day. "If I was there now, that would be a problem. A huge problem for [American Top Team owner] Nunes said the feeling at ATT was that a fight between herself and Harrison was inevitable. "As soon as she got a microphone, she used to talk about me," said Nunes. "From that moment, we already started getting like, not different, but like we always respect each other in the gym – but we knew the energy. We never would be able to connect. "Here and there we were training, also I was completely out of shape. Every time I'd come back to the gym, somehow we're training and I'm like damn, I'm going to train with Kayla when I'm completely out of shape? That's not fair. Now we're going to see each other when I'm at full-time in camp, 100 percent strong 'The Lioness' and she's going to know exactly who I am inside the cage." Harrison captured the UFC women's bantamweight title on Saturday night of the co-main event of UFC 316, dominating Julianna Pena on her way to a late third-round submission win to claim that title. After the win, Harrison invited Nunes, who was on hand at the Prudential Center in New Jersey for UFC 316, to step into the Octagon, where Harrison said, "I feel like we knew this was going to happen. I have the belt, she has the legacy. Let's put it on the table." If Nunes is not the best woman to compete in MMA, she is at least in the conversation. Nunes debuted with the UFC in 2013 with a 7-3 record. She opened her career with the promotion with two first-round knockout wins. However, in her third outing under the UFC banner, Nunes fell to Cat Zingano, losing that fight by TKO in the third round. Nunes would not lose again until December 2021. During her 12-fight winning streak, Nunes won the bantamweight title and defended it five times, beating notable names Miesha Tate, Ronda Rousey, and Holly Holm by first-round stoppage. Nunes also captured the featherweight belt during that title run, defending it twice. Nunes took ownership of the 145-pound crown with a first-round knockout of Cris Cyborg, who had not tasted defeat in over 13 years. In a flat and somewhat confusing performance, Nunes lost her 135-pound crown in December 2021, falling to Julianna Pena by second-round submission. In July 2022, Nunes regained the bantamweight belt with a decision win over Pena. She defended the crown against Aldana, who replaced the injured Pena in what was to be a trilogy bout. Nunes then retired from active competition as the bantamweight and featherweight champ. "Double champion forever," Nunes said after the win. "This is the perfect night to retire." Nunes' split with ATT came after her loss to Pena. Nunes, who is not in the UFC drug testing pool and has not been tested since 2023, said she would like to face Harrison before the end of the year. UFC CEO Dana White said during the UFC 316 post-fight press conference that the promotion would discuss the matchup and the weight class for the Harrison vs. Pena fight during Tuesday's matchmaking meeting.

UFC 316's Kevin Holland calls out Colby Covington: 'I like beating up on sorry people'

UFC 316's Kevin Holland calls out Colby Covington: 'I like beating up on sorry people' Kevin Holland sets his sight on former UFC title challenger Colby Covington. Show Caption Hide Caption UFC 316: Kevin Holland post-fight interview UFC 316 winner Kevin Holland spoke to MMA Junkie and reporters post-fight after his second-round submission of Vicente Luque. NEWARK, N.J. – Kevin Holland just called for a fight that could have the most trash talk in MMA history. Holland (28-13 MMA, 15-10 UFC), who's referred to as "Big Mouth" by UFC CEO Dana White due to his trash talking in and out of the cage, called out arguably the biggest villain in UFC welterweight history, Colby Covington. Holland shot his shot following his submission win over Vicente Luque on the main card of Saturday's UFC 316 at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. "Colby Covington, you're the worst guy in the welterweight division," Holland said on the microphone in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan. "I like beating up on sorry people." Following the win, Holland spoke to reporters backstage where he elaborated further on his callout. He thinks that a fight between him and Covington would be one of the biggest non-title fights you could make today. "I think it will be a good one," Holland said at the UFC 316 post-fight news conference. "I know they're doing 'The Ultimate Fighter' house right now with Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen, but to be honest with you, they can just cancel that one and just do me and Colby. Me and Colby could do whatever. Anything me and Colby do would sell. "It can be fun. It can be a lot of sh*t talking. It can be whatever it needs to be. I think me and Colby do numbers, and it would be the highest Fight Night. If we were to be on a pay-per-view event, we'd help sell that thing out. You wouldn't even need a stacked undercard." Holland is now 2-0 since making a return to the welterweight division. Prior to submitting Luque, Holland had defeated UFC staple Gunnar Nelson in a hard-fought decision. Meanwhile, Covington hasn't fought since December when he was stopped by Joaquin Buckley. Covington, a two-time UFC welterweight title challenger, is on a two-fight losing streak and 2-4 in his past six trips to the octagon.
