Kayla Harrison shrugs off Demetrious Johnson's negative outlook on Amanda Nunes fight
Demetrious Johnson's call for Kayla Harrison to retire left the UFC women's bantamweight champion a little confused.
Harrison (19-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) claimed the 135-pound title by submitting Julianna Peña in this past Saturday's UFC 316 co-main event. The two-time PFL champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist judoka immediately welcomed Amanda Nunes (23-5 MMA, 16-2 UFC) into the octagon for a faceoff, setting up her next fight.
Johnson said Harrison fighting Nunes is a very bad idea and suggested that she retire. The comments came as a surprise considering that Harrison will have an opportunity to add the consensus greatest female fighter of all time to her resume, and has just recently started her UFC career.
Harrison made it clear that she completely disagrees with Johnson.
"I mean, everyone's entitled to their opinion," Harrison told MMA Junkie. "He gets paid to give his opinions, so fair play to him. I live my life out loud, and so there's a lot of room for people to have their own thoughts and speculate or comment on my life and my choices.
"But I think that it's important for people to know that I do believe in myself, and I think it's important for people to know that it's OK to believe in yourself. Like, how dare you tell me to think less of me? I'm the greatest, and I'm going to prove it."
Oddsmakers at least don't support Johnson's idea that Harrison fighting Nunes is a bad idea. Harrison has opened up as a slight favorite over former UFC dual champion Nunes, who will be coming out of retirement after hanging up her gloves in June 2023.
"I've never met the guy," Harrison said of Johnson. "I'm a huge fan of him. I have been for a long time. I've always considered him – I mean, he was my GOAT for a long time. So, whatever. It's none of my business what people think of me."

Jared Cannonier vs. Michael Page added to UFC 319 in Chicago
Jared Cannonier vs. Michael Page added to UFC 319 in Chicago The lineup for the UFC's return to the "Windy City" continues to build with the addition of a former title challenger to the lineup. Jared Cannonier (18-8 MMA, 11-8 UFC) is set to take on Michael Page (23-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) at UFC 319, which takes place Aug. 16 at United Center in Chicago. UFC officials announced the middleweight booking Friday. Although a card placement wasn't announced, the matchup almost certainly will be part of the pay-per-view main card. UFC 319 is headlined by a middleweight title fight between champion Dricus Du Plessis and challenger Khamzat Chimaev. Page had a high-profile UFC debut at UFC 299 15 months ago and outworked Kevin Holland for a unanimous decision at welterweight. He dropped his follow-up to Ian Machado Garry, but in February threw a wrench into the middleweight division with an upset of Shara Magomedov. Now the longtime Bellator standout will look for a second straight at 185 pounds in the UFC. Cannonier fought for the middleweight title in mid-2022, but dropped a decision to then-champ Israel ADesanya. He had back-to-back wins over former title challengers Sean Strickland and Marvin Vettori after that, but fell back in to the pack when he dropped bouts to Nassourdine Imavov and Caio Borralho in 2024. Earlier this year, though, the "Killa Gorilla" got back on track with a fourth-round knockout of Gregory Rodrigues in a bonus-winning performance in his latest UFC main event. A win over Page would be another high-profile one to add to his resume and keep him in contention at 185. With the addition, the latest UFC 319 lineup now includes:

Simone Biles apologizes for heated exchange with Riley Gaines over trans athlete participation
Two-time Olympic all-around champion Simone Biles has apologized for getting personal in a heated online exchange with former collegiate swimmer turned anti-trans athlete activist Riley Gaines. Biles, an 11-time Olympic medalist and the most decorated gymnast of all-time, initially responded to a post by Gaines on the social media platform X after Gaines called a player on a Minnesota high school softball team 'a boy.' Biles wrote that Gaines was 'truly sick' and a 'straight up sore loser,' comments Biles later retracted. Biles wrote that the current system in sports doesn't adequately address the balance between competitive equity and inclusivity and the discussion of the topic can lead to 'frustration and heated exchanges.' 'It didn't help for me to get personal with Riley,' Biles wrote. Biles clarified that her main objection was that Gaines opted to single out an underage athlete, when that athlete has no control over what Biles called a 'flawed system.' 'I believe sports organizations have a responsibility to come up with rules supporting inclusion while maintaining fair competition,' Biles posted. 'We all want a future for sport that is fair, inclusive, and respectful.'
