University of Montevallo increasing patrol following knife confrontation on campus
MONTEVALLO, Ala. (WIAT) — University of Montevallo Police report a student was sitting in their car in the Carmichael Library parking lot when an unknown man came up to their door, opened it and confronted them around midnight Tuesday.
'There's been nothing like that that's ever happened,' said University of Montevallo Freshman Kyson Dibble.
Dibble said he was feet away from the altercation walking back to his dorm.
'I didn't really see anything crazy and that's what's scary about it,' said Dibble.

University of Montevallo student Ashlynn Romines said she was walking around campus Tuesday night as well, saying she was surprised, as safety hasn't been a concern for her.
'That's why it was kind of a shock when I got back to my room around 12 a.m. I saw the message from police saying this incident had happened and I was shocked because I was over there on the other side of campus,' said Romines.
According to the University of Montevallo Police, the man pulled out a knife, but no one was stabbed.
Police said the man dropped the knife and fled the parking lot. The student was taken to the hospital and eventually released back to campus.
The university has declared it an isolated incident.

'I'm hoping that it doesn't happen again. I'm hoping that it was just an isolated incident. I hope that since campus is so small it's going to be easy to patrol it. I've always felt safe on campus,' said Dibble.
The university said they are increasing patrol in the area as a result.
With no arrest made at the time of this reporting, Romines said she is on alert in hopes the person is caught.
'I already don't walk at night by myself, but I do have a Taser so I might need to start bringing that around now that I've heard that something has happened and it can happen again,' said Romines.
UMPD said they are still investigating this incident.

Typically, these messages demand payment for non-existent traffic tickets. State officials have emphasized that there is no such entity as the 'Alabama DMV,' and driver licensing services in Alabama are handled by ALEA's Driver License Division. Vehicle registration is handled by the Alabama Department of Revenue, and license plates are issued through local county probate offices. 'Organized group' linked to 10 separate shootings in Tuscaloosa County 'Scammers are trying to create a false sense of urgency by threatening you and your drivingprivileges,' ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor said in a statement. 'We urge all Alabamians to be cautious and remember that our Agency will never contact you this way.' Hitchhiker dies after Northern California deputies restrain him, using pepper spray and Taser
A Northern California hitchhiker died Thursday evening after he was restrained by law enforcement officers who zapped him with a Taser, used pepper spray and held him down on his stomach as they struggled to place him under arrest, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office. The confrontation between law enforcement and the 36-year-old hitchhiker occurred in Willits after officers received a complaint that the hitchhiker had 'brutally assaulted' a driver who had picked him up. The incident began around 7:02 p.m. when the California Highway Patrol notified the sheriff's office of an altercation between a driver and the hitchhiker in the 2000 block of Hearst Willits Road. Authorities say the attack on the driver was unprovoked and his injuries required hospitalization. A sheriff's deputy responding to the area encountered the suspect walking in the middle of the roadway. According to the department, the man ignored commands, assumed a fighting stance, and lunged at the deputy, prompting a drawn Taser and repeated attempts at de-escalation. The situation escalated as the man fled into nearby brush. Law enforcement used pepper spray and a Taser after the man resisted arrest and allegedly assaulted a deputy during the struggle to restrain him, the sheriff's office said. Officers from the Willits Police Department arrived to assist, and authorities eventually succeeded in handcuffing the suspect. Shortly after, deputies reported that the man became unresponsive. CPR was initiated and Narcan was administered at the scene. Emergency responders continued life-saving efforts for roughly 30 minutes before the man was pronounced dead. As required under county protocol for in-custody deaths, the Mendocino County District Attorney's Office has taken over the investigation.
